Yojimbo (Criterion Collection Spine #52)Yojimbo (Criterion Collection Spine #52)
Buy used from: $7.44
Yojimbo means "bodyguard". The movie describes the life of a Japanese samurai, quite far from the common Western perception of it.
Ugetsu - Criterion CollectionUgetsu - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $31.99 / Used from: $22.95
A fascinating movie, very much highlighting the importance of the family as a fortress protecting from the evils of the world. Directed by the famous Kenji Mizoguchi. Another reason to see that movie is that unlike modern Japanese movies, this one sheds light on one more traditional, and threfore, more nostalgic Japan
Life of Oharu [VHS]Life of Oharu [VHS]
Buy used from: $14.87
There is a scene in this movie, when a man looks at an old prostitute with a lantern and invites her to his place. There he draws the lantern to her face and shows her to a group of young men. He asks them if, after seeing what she is and how she looks like, they still feel like buying a woman...Then he pays Oharu, and tells her to leave. I find this to be an instance of cruelty beyond any limits.
Akira Kurosawa's DreamsAkira Kurosawa's Dreams
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $5.00
A beautiful movie in the sequence of unrelated dreams. There are scenes in dazzling color, very typical of Kurosawa.
A Snake of JuneA Snake of June
Buy used from: $1.55
Alienated husband and wife get together again through the help of a photographer who has cancer. The "help" he offers is quite erotic, however. Nevertheless, I found the plot to be lacking if not quite confused. Still, worth taking a look.
When a Woman Ascends the Stairs: Criterion CollectionWhen a Woman Ascends the Stairs: Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.99 / Used from: $18.95
My first encounter with Mikio Naruse and what an encounter! This is the story of a Tokyo hostess approaching her thirties and her so female quest for happiness.I found this movie to be deeply empathic.
Mishima - A Life in Four ChaptersMishima - A Life in Four Chapters
Buy used from: $14.70
The life of Yukio Mishima intertwined with three of his novels--The Temple of the Golden Pavilion, Kyoko's House and Runaway Horses. Apart from the terrible English narration, a must see for Mishima's admirers. Philip Glass's music creates a sense of tension and anticipation, which I liked.
The Pornographers - Criterion CollectionThe Pornographers - Criterion Collection

Hiroshima Mon Amour - Criterion CollectionHiroshima Mon Amour - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $27.99 / Used from: $19.95
I don't know why this movie gave me the same feeling as reading Remarque's The Night in Lisbon.
Woman in the DunesWoman in the Dunes
Buy used from: $29.99
A woman seeing this film can easily feel like a tarantula weaving her web in anticipation of the prey. It is beautiful nevertheless. I would say it misses an important element of the male attraction to the female, apart from sex and comfort.
In the Realm of the SensesIn the Realm of the Senses
Buy used from: $19.95
I will only say I wish I had the guts (and partner) to live like that :)
Tokyo Story - Criterion CollectionTokyo Story - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $28.49 / Used from: $18.95
Everyday cares and chores make us indifferent and even cruel to the people closest to us--our parents. It is a rarity to see a movie on such a sensitive topic these days.
Floating Weeds [Region 2]Floating Weeds [Region 2]
Buy used from: $79.98
A very pleasant movie about traveling Kabuki actors, their personal lives and secrets. There is something spontaneous and fresh about it.
Enjo [VHS]Enjo [VHS]
Buy used from: $14.98
Based on Mishima's "The Temple of the Golden Pavilion," the movie is not entirely faithful to the book. In partucular, Mizoguchi does not kick the prostitute in the stomach, but pushes her down. His relationship with his mother is much more developed in the movie than in the book. Was this censorship?
The Burmese Harp [VHS]The Burmese Harp [VHS]
Buy used from: $2.35
Mizushima is an epitome of Japanese individualism (yes!) and more broadly, human compassion and Buddhism. I would say this movie is controversial despite its antiwar message. The Burmese are portrayed as very peaceful and passive people.
Go, Go Second Time VirginGo, Go Second Time Virgin
Buy used from: $42.95
You would better have an open mind for this one. Directed by Koji Wakamatsu (In the realm of senses)
The Lady of Musashino (Import NTSC All Regions)The Lady of Musashino (Import NTSC All Regions)
Buy used from: $10.75
Directed by Kenji Mizoguchi. A wonderful slow and graceful movie about Japan's post-war morals and a woman struggling to preserve her loveless marriage.
Who's Camus Anyway?Who's Camus Anyway?
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $8.15
Mitsuo Yanagimachi also directed the 1976 Godspeed you!Black Emperor. This is an extremely refreshing and entertaining movie about Tokyo students making a movie that incorporates elements of Camus's The Stranger.
Vengeance Is Mine - Criterion CollectionVengeance Is Mine - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $12.99
Maybe the most objective movie I have seen about what can turn a man into a murderer--seen in light of his childhood, Iwao's actions make sense (despite being socially unacceptable). With or without knowledge of his childhood and family, his crimes remain heinous but a focus solely on his violence would have been totally incomplete. I can't dislike him.
Three Films By Hiroshi Teshigahara (Pitfall / Woman In The Dunes / The Face Of Another) (Criterion Collection)Three Films By Hiroshi Teshigahara (Pitfall / Woman In The Dunes / The Face Of Another) (Criterion Collection)
Buy new: $54.49 / Used from: $30.00
The Face of Another. A man's face is disfigured during an industrial accident. His psychiatrist makes a lifelike mask for him. The movie raises a similar question to that of the Stalker: f2f with our naked selves, what kind of monsters are lurking in the darkness...
Odd Obsession [VHS]Odd Obsession [VHS]
Buy used from: $4.98
Based on Junichiro Tanizaki's Kagi (The Key); an excellent adaptation of the novel although some subtle psychological nuances, which make the book such a joy to read are difficult to find in the movie. English subtitles not great either.
Ame agaru [Region 2]Ame agaru [Region 2]
Utopian and very zen. As usual, Japanese are all about the perfection of the self. Maybe a bit sentimental.
Patriotism - Criterion CollectionPatriotism - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $10.99
This 30 min movie is entirely focused on the performance of hara-kiri by Mishima himself. His devoted wife, Rieko, follows. It is quite explicit and disturbing. Several of Mishima's fetishes obvious-focus on his body hair and muscles, in particular. You can find the short story "Patriotism" in his "Death in midsummer" collection.

What a relaxing movie for a lazy afternoon. A teacher spends her vacation on an island where everyone is good at "twilighting" except her. Initially annoyed at having nothing to do, she slowly learns the art of enjoying the "small" pleasures of life without the constant urge of preoccupying her mind with meaningless distractions.
