![]() | Beethoven: The Complete Symphonies (Box Set)
Buy used from: $43.99 My favorite conductor of the older generation, Eugen Jochum, conducting the London Symphony Orchestra in the mid-1970s. These are great performances, and in better sound than Jochum's two earlier sets. However, I must admit that Norrington's faster paced period performances have changed my view of these works over the years--nevertheless, this set remains a favorite (see my review).
![]() | Beethoven: The 9 Symphonies [Box Set]
Buy new: $47.98 / Used from: $75.13 Jochum's earlier set made during his tenure with the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam in the 1960s. His performance of the 3rd symphony is remarkable, although I definitely prefer Jochum's later LSO performances of the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 9th symphonies (particularly the LSO 9th, which is deeply spiritual).
![]() | Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, Op. 125 (Choral)
Buy used from: $0.98 This is the earliest CD release of Jochum's LSO performance of Beethoven's 9th, which was first issued on the EMI label. It offers a less expensive way to sample some of Jochum's finest Beethoven; although be warned that when it first came out on CD the Penquin Guide gave it a qualified rave review, stating that the analogue LP sound had been poorly transferred to CD.
![]() | Beethoven: The 9 Symphonies [Box Set]
Buy used from: $25.00 This is Jochum's first Beethoven cycle, recorded for DG in the 1950s. It is divided between the Berlin Philharmonic and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra--an orchestra that Jochum founded. I include this set for completeness, though I prefer his later two cycles, and chiefly the LSO set, both as performances and recordings (this DG set is a mixture of stereo and mono sound).
![]() | Beethoven: The 9 Symphonies [Box Set] by Ludwig van Beethoven
Buy new: $52.98 / Used from: $45.07 This set is considered by many to be the quintessential set of Beethoven symphonies, and is a primary recommendation; however, please note that the sound quality is not very good, if this is to be your one and only set.
![]() | Beethoven: 9 Symphonies [Box Set]
Buy used from: $69.94 An earlier release of the same Furtwangler set mentioned above, which I have included because I feel that it has been less tampered with sound-wise than the more recent set; although, be warned, I may be alone in this thinking. It is also the more expensive set of the two.
![]() | Beethoven - Symphony no. 9 'Choral' / Furtwängler, Schwarzkopf, Höngen, Hopf, Edelmann (Great Recordings of The Century)
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $4.54 A legendary recording made at Bayreuth after the war. It is widely considered a classic. (This is the same performance of the Ninth that is included in Furtwangler's complete EMI set listed above.)
![]() | Beethoven: Symphony No. 9
Buy used from: $40.36 EDIT: I was surprised to learn that this is the real Furtwangler 1951 Bayreuth performance of the 9th, given at the reopening of the Bayreuth Festival after WWII. The legendary EMI version above was recorded at a dress rehearsal. Furtwangler takes the 9th to its absolute limits here, and though it's in poor mono sound, this is probably the greatest performance of Beethoven's 9th I've ever heard.
![]() | Beethoven Symphony 9, Furtwangler Conducts The Lucerne Festival by Elisabeth Schwarzkopf
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $34.06 This was my favorite Furtwangler performance of Beethoven's 9th--that is, until I heard the Orfeo recording above. It was recorded live after the war at the 1954 Lucerne Festival, and the mono sound is actually not that bad.
![]() | Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 (Hybrid SACD) by Elisabeth Schwarzkopf (SOP)
Buy new: $21.98 / Used from: $55.19 Here is Furtwangler's 1954 Lucerne 9th in new and improved hybrid SACD sound.
![]() | Beethoven Symphony No. 9, "Choral" (concert at the Musikvereinsaal in Vienna, 30 May 1953) by Rosette Anday
Buy used from: $83.94 Another transcendant live performance of Beethoven's 9th from Furtwangler--this time in Vienna, and the sound is reasonably good thanks to the DG engineers.
![]() | Beethoven: Symphony 9; Furtwangler in Berlin 1942
Buy used from: $18.97 Furtwangler's famous 1942 live recording performed before an audience that included high ranking members of Nazi party. Much has been made about the apocalytic fervor of the performance, as an expression of Furtwangler's anger and defiance toward the Nazis, but listeners should be warned that the recorded sound is really terrible, and I mean, miserably so.
![]() | Furtwangler Conducts Beethoven - Beethoven: symphonies no 3,4,5, & 9, Leonore
Buy new: $45.98 / Used from: $86.59 Here is another issue of the 1942 Furtwangler 9th, which according to the reviews is in much improved sound--I can't say because I haven't heard it.
![]() | Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 1-9; Grosse Fuge; Egmont Overtures [Box Set] by Ludwig van Beethoven
Buy used from: $84.99 Otto Klemperer was one of the great conductors of Beethoven's music in the 20th century (alongside Furtwangler and Jochum). These are the same "stereo" performances as in the boxed set listed below--without Daniel Barenboim's performances of the Five Piano Concertos--reissued in 1994.
![]() | Beethoven: The Complete Symphonies and Piano Concertos
Buy new: $38.47 / Used from: $45.00 This is same Klemperer EMI set as above in a later 2000 reissue, plus Barenboim's performances of the Five Piano Concertos. Be warned that Klemperer's choice of tempi can be on the slow side when compared to other conductors, yet he is able to achieve an real sense of monumentality in these works.
![]() | Beethoven Symphony No. 3 'Eroica'
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $4.88 I have included this "Eroica" because some collectors prefer Klemperer's more dynamic "mono" Beethoven performances with the same orchestra to his later stereo recordings.
![]() | Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 5 & 7
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $46.41 Here is an earlier "mono" performance of the 5th by Klemperer and the Philharmonia, along with their later "stereo" performance of 7th.
![]() | Beethoven: The Symphonies [Box Set]
Buy new: $32.98 / Used from: $23.91 For those on a limited budget, this set by Herbert Blomstedt and the Staatskapelle Dresden makes an excellent choice. The Dresden is my favorite orchestra in the world; it was also once Beethoven's favorite as well, as he chose it to premiere his Missa Solemnis. Though Blomstedt's choice of tempi can be a little spacious at times, the orchestra's refinement and virtuosity are truly amazing.
![]() | Beethoven: 9 Symphonies
Buy used from: $25.45 Not everyone is crazy about Sir Roger Norrington's pioneering period set of Beethoven symphonies--however, I find his performances of the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, and 8th symphonies to be exceptionally well conceived. Perhaps this has something to do with the fact that he tries to follow Beethoven's metronome markings throughout (see my review).
![]() | Beethoven: Symphony No 9 /ORR * Gardiner by Monteverdi Choir
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $5.23 An exceptional 9th--the finest performance from John Eliot Gardiner's period instrument cycle. Not surprisingly, Gardiner's best Beethoven performances are in the choral works (the 9th symphony and the Missa Solemnis), which undoubtedly has something to do with his extraordinary Monteverdi choir--one of the most brilliant choirs in the world today.
![]() | Beethoven: 9 Symphonies - Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique / Gardiner
Buy new: $67.98 / Used from: $29.85 Though I tend to prefer the greater sense of urgency and passion in Norrington's Beethoven (except for his 6th and 9th symphonies), Gardiner's period set is nonetheless essential listening (as is Bruggen's set--particularly in the earlier symphonies.)
![]() | Symphonies 1 & 2 by Beethoven
Buy used from: $35.94 Fine period performances of the first two symphonies from Frans Bruggen and the Orchestra of the 18th Century. Those who loved Bruggen's superb Haydn and Mozart symphony cycles won't be disppointed here.
![]() | Beethoven: The 9 Symphonies [Box Set] by Lynne Dawson
Buy used from: $49.98 This is the complete Bruggen set.
![]() | Beethoven: Symphonies; Ouvertures [Box Set]
Buy new: $106.99 / Used from: $80.91 EDIT: I am adding this recent period set by Anima Eterna conducted by Jos van Immerseel, even though I haven't heard it yet, as it has received some positive reviews, and knowing this excellent group, I can't imagine that it isn't at least competitive. My initial impression-- judging from the samples--is that the horns sound wonderfully authentic (an inviting sign).
![]() | Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 1-9 [Special Edition] [Hybrid SACD] [Box Set]
Buy new: $88.98 / Used from: $71.14 Haitink has made some wonderful Beethoven recordings in the past--particularly of the 9th symphony, in which he excels, and this live LSO set is one of the best of the recent Beethoven cycles: with that said, however, I should mention that Haitink has rethought his earlier interpretations from his first two cycles, making this set more period informed--which hasn't proved to all tastes.
![]() | Beethoven: The Symphonies [Box Set]
Buy used from: $99.99 For the sake of comparison, I've included Haitink's earlier set with the Concertgebouw Orchestra--samples are provided for both. You will immediately hear how much less period influenced it is than the LSO set, but that is not always a negative. Please note that the ninth in this set is not the same as the "live" recording below, but a tamer studio remake which most critics preferred.
![]() | Beethoven: Symphonie Nr. 9
Buy used from: $4.72 This live concert of the 9th symphony was digitally recorded in 1980. It was the first recording of the 9th that I ever owned, and though it wasn't all that well received by critics--the Penquin guide gave it two stars--it's remains one of my all-time favorites. The final movement is so powerful and elemental--one of the most exciting performances I've ever heard from Haitink.
![]() | Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 5 & 7 by Beethoven
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $47.98 These are legendary performances, which now sound terrific in the Hybrid SACD format, and the Vienna Philharmonic plays exceptionally well throughout--particularly in the 7th symphony. Nevertheless, I still prefer Jochum, Klemperer, Celibidache and Furtwangler in the 5th symphony because they understand the critical transition late in the 3rd movement more profoundly than Kleiber.
![]() | Beethoven: Symphony No. 4
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $11.68 Another exceptional live performance from Kleiber of the 4th symphony, again with the fine Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. As with the Kleiber recording listed above, this CD is also short measure, but certainly worth it.
![]() | Beethoven: Symphonie No. 6
Buy used from: $47.78 An electric performance from Kleiber--with surprisingly brisk tempos, but short measure if you have to pay full price. (Please note that it is a live performance and audience coughs are audible, which may be a negative for some listeners.)
![]() | CELIBIDACHE / Münchner Philharmoniker - Beethoven: Symphony No. 9
Buy used from: $68.32 Celibidache was a remarkable conductor; however, his tempos could be notoriously slow at times. What may work in the concert hall does not always translate to recordings, which is why Celibidache refused to make recordings--these were posthumously released.
![]() | CELIBIDACHE / Münchner Philharmoniker - Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 4 & 5
Buy used from: $24.98 Curiously, these are the least expensive of the Celibidache recordings, and some of his best performances. Again, leisurely tempos, but like Jochum, Furtwangler, and Klemperer, Celibidache really understands the profound spiritual transition that occurs late in the 3rd movement of the 5th, where the power of the human will triumphs over despair. Most conductors don't, including Karajan.
![]() | CELIBIDACHE / Münchner Philharmoniker - Beethoven: Symphony No. 6 / Leonore III Overture
Buy used from: $27.00 This is an excellent performance, but is it really worth $54.52? Well, I don't think so, but maybe to some people. For die-hard Celibidache fans only, unless you can get it at a more reasonable price, or have the money to burn.
![]() | Beethoven: Symphony No. 6, Schubert: Symphony No. 5 / Böhm, Vienna Philharmonic Orch.
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $4.98 A classic performance of Beethoven's 6th "Pastoral" symphony, with Karl Bohm conducting the Vienna Philharmonic. However, I prefer Jochum's more rugged interpretation with the LSO.
![]() | Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 4 & 6 "Pastorale"
Buy new: $7.98 / Used from: $1.74 Bruno Walter's 1958 recording of Beethoven's 6th with the Columbia Symphony Orchestra is legendary, and for many collectors remains a top choice, which is why I include it.
![]() | Beethoven: Symphonie No. 9; Overture "Egmont"
Buy new: $31.99 / Used from: $9.86 A superbly taut, utterly dynamic performance of Beethoven's 9th from the great Hungarian conductor Ferenc Fricsay and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.
![]() | Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 4 - 6 by Kubelik
Rafael Kubelik was a great conductor, and these are very recommendable performances, particularly if you lean towards a more highly refined, classically restrained approach to Beethoven. Please note that each symphony is played by a different orchestra.
![]() | Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 7, 8, 9
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $6.09 A continuation of the Kubelik set above. Only Kubelik's ninth is a little disappointing here.
![]() | Beethoven: The 9 Symphonies [Hybrid SACD] [Box Set]
Buy new: $59.99 / Used from: $49.99 Conductor Kurt Masur also tends to take a more classical approach to Beethoven. The Gewandhaus Orchestra plays brilliantly throughout (incredible woodwind section), and the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 6th symphonies are particularly excellent. The Penatone hybrid SACD sound is a great improvement over past releases.
![]() | Beethoven: Symphony No. 9
Buy used from: $53.53 This live performance of the 9th Symphony is one of the most inspired Beethoven performances that I have heard from Masur and the Gewandhaus orchestra, and it is preferrable to their earlier 1970s studio recording above. There is something extra special about hearing the ninth in a live performance, even when it is a recorded one, as is the case here.
