![]() | Chase the Devil - Religious Music of the Southern Appalachians
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $13.84 I loved this film on so many levels. I just kept thinking how many unbelievable musicians have existed in this country who probably never even thought of recording.

![]() | Heartworn Highways
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $8.49 Townes Van Zandt footage is breathtaking. David Allen Coe says the MF word a lot.
|
![]() | Townes Van Zandt - Be Here to Love Me
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $14.13 This film worked on many levels. It made a case for Townes Van Zandt being a songwriter at the level of Dylan or Hank Williams. This film also tells the story of an exceptional but troubled person.

![]() | High Lonesome - The Story of Bluegrass Music
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $10.99 The interviews with Bill Monroe are priceless. Great overview of the history of bluegrass music.
|
![]() | Pete Seeger's Rainbow Quest - The Stanley Brothers and Doc Watson
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $11.80 The Stanley Brothers footage sent shivers down my spine but also illustrated just how funny they likely were live. Doc Watson is great as well. Pete Seeger talks a lot.
|
![]() | Deep Blues: A Musical Pilgrimage to the Crossroads
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $7.90 Watch this DVD for footage of RL Burnside and other incredible musicians. The book Deep Blues, which is more of a general history of the blues, is probably the best book I've ever read on the blues.
|
![]() | Devil Got My Woman
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $20.25 This footage should be seen by anyone with any interest in any kind of music.
|
![]() | American Experience - The Carter Family - Will the Circle Be Unbroken - PBS
Buy used from: $49.00 I don't know why this DVD is not available, but you can get in on Netflix.
|
![]() | The Howlin' Wolf Story - The Secret History of Rock & Roll
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $10.06 Not a particularly well-made documentary, but the footage shown really transcends the quality of the film.
|
![]() | Lucinda Williams - Live from Austin, TX
Buy new: $15.49 / Used from: $6.78 Lucinda Williams at her prime. I couldn't take my eyes away from her.
|
![]() | Townes Van Zandt - Houston 1988 - A Private Concert
Buy used from: $99.99 Not as essential as the documentary about his life, but if you love Townes, then you can't go wrong here.
|
![]() | Pete Seeger's Rainbow Quest - Johnny Cash and Roscoe Holcombe
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $11.00 Johnny Cash is not very sober, but he has an intensity about him that is incredible. Roscoe Holcombe is on fire. Another highlight is June Carter talking about her family.
|
![]() | You See Me Laughin'
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $13.89 This DVD turned me on to many great blues artists. There are some very entertaining interviews too.
|
![]() | Johnny Cash - The Anthology
Buy used from: $6.84 Skip Walk the Line and just get this.
|
![]() | Steve Earle - Live from Austin, TX
Buy new: $15.49 / Used from: $3.66 Unjustly maligned by a reviewer on Netflix as his early "pop-country" stuff, this is Steve Earle sounding passionate (and looking maybe a little unhealthy).
|
![]() | Gillian Welch - The Revelator Collection
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $7.85 If you are sold on Gillian Welch, as I am, then you can't really go wrong here. Live footage and minimalist music videos, which in in general I guess I like a little less since I'm a person who tends to have zero interest in MTV music videos.
|
![]() | Dixie Chicks: Shut Up & Sing (Full Screen Edition)
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $1.40 If you're like me and you kind of have a soft spot for the Dixie Chicks, then you can't go wrong with this film, which is also intersting on another level as a study of the politics of country music.
|
![]() | Bonnie Raitt - Live at Montreux 1977
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $8.98 A beautiful person at her musical peak. A smokin' band.
|
![]() | Second Fiddle to a Steel Guitar
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $7.98 Silly but enjoyable (and thankfully short) story about a couple who book a county music show when the opera who was supposed to play backs out. The real treasure here is the performances, which include Faron Young, Lefty Frizzell, Kitty Wells, Webb Pierce, Bill Monroe, and many more. None of these artist are really in their element, it seems, but still well worth watching.

![]() | Nashville Rebel
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $7.00 One of the best. This gave me an appreciation for his vocal delivery that I didn't immediately get on his albums.
