Les Miserables Complete Symphonic RecordingLes Miserables Complete Symphonic Recording by Various Artists
Buy new: $29.98 / Used from: $15.00
I am a huge Broadway musical fan, and Les Mis was my very first one. All that's missing on this recording is Colm Wilkinson. I come back to "One Day More" often. Best end of act 1 song ever!
Spring Awakening (2006 Original Broadway Cast)Spring Awakening (2006 Original Broadway Cast) by Duncan Sheik
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.70
This is perhaps my favorite new musical. I know why it deserved the Best Musical Tony. It really is a great yet tragic story and the songs by Duncan Sheik are wonderful. I have had the pleasure of seeing it on Broadway and meeting the cast. It's a shame that the best songs have the worst language. Case in point, "Totally F***ed"
Ragtime - The Musical (1998 Original Broadway Cast)Ragtime - The Musical (1998 Original Broadway Cast) by Stephen Flaherty
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $9.90
If there were a better musical adaptation to a book, this would be the one. It's simply a lovely work to listen to with very fitting music. Get it simply for Brian Stokes Mitchell and Audra McDonald, they'll bowl you over with "Wheels of a Dream."
Aida (2000 Original Broadway Cast)Aida (2000 Original Broadway Cast) by Elton John
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $4.44
Okay, this did not deserve to close when it did. This IS the original Romeo and Juliet. And I dare any of you girls to not fall in love with Adam Pascal in "Elaborate Lives." I mean, he was sexy enough in Rent, but this just makes me go all mushy. His voice...go on, I dare you...
Jekyll & Hyde - The Gothic Musical Thriller (1994 Concept Cast)Jekyll & Hyde - The Gothic Musical Thriller (1994 Concept Cast) by Frank Wildhorn
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $9.94
After recently doing the show, I remember why I loved it so much. Even though the OBC does have some nice arrangements on some of the songs, this is the version to get if you want all of it.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975 Film)The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975 Film) by Richard O'Brien
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.74
"And crawling on the planet's face, some insects called the human race." A midnight showing with some theatre friends has deflowered me, so to say. I will be going to more...
Chess in Concert (2 CD)Chess in Concert (2 CD) by Josh Groban
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $14.99
Tim Rice said in the concert that they may be getting it right. After hearing some other versions of some of the songs, I have to agree. Brain went into overload with both Josh Groban and Adam Pascal involved. I can't picture anyone vocally better to play rival chess players.
Rent (1996 Original Broadway Cast)Rent (1996 Original Broadway Cast) by Jeff Potter
Buy new: $29.49 / Used from: $5.96
I love the movie soundtrack as well, but I would probably have not bothered if it weren't for this. My mom was brave enough to play this in the car when I was a little one, but I didn't get serious about it until I was 15, a little less than a year before the movie came out. Once again, features the dreamboat known as Adam Pascal. I still get little orgasms when I hear him in this...
Into the Woods (1987 Original Broadway Cast)Into the Woods (1987 Original Broadway Cast) by Stephen Sondheim
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $6.00
Sondheim is one of my idols. Sweeney Todd is also amazing, but this comes closer to my heart as it puts new faces onto classic fairytale characters, and unexpected tragedy after happily ever after. He does not fail in this score...
The Dream of the Blue TurtlesThe Dream of the Blue Turtles by Sting
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $0.99
Sting has perhaps saved me from being a Broadway-only dork for life with the Police song "Every Breath You Take." His unmistakable raspy voice always soothed me. It didn't hurt that he looked gorgeous as well. This is the only album of his where I love every song on it.
Dreaming Out LoudDreaming Out Loud by OneRepublic
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $3.77
Something I didn't really get into until I got into VH1. The video for "Stop and Stare" blew me away. You would never know Timbaland produced this except on "Apologize." They are also AMAZING live!
FearlessFearless by Taylor Swift
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $8.78
I think I like this one better than her first. I'm not afraid to admit that she is a favorite for me. Plus there's an amazing music video for "You Belong With Me" now. Listen to her self titled debut too.
GlorianaGloriana by Gloriana
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $8.11
A new country group that's touring with Taylor Swift. I think I need to see them both while they're still on tour because this album has some really catchy songs as well as lovely ballads without overdoing it.
Blinding LightBlinding Light by Pascal
Buy new: $28.49 / Used from: $23.98
I bought this at the merch booth at Rent when (joy of joys!) he came back for the tour. Of course his voice is beautiful; I fall into a trance-like state whenever I hear it. But Larry Edoff's piano was the missing link. The two of them together make a lovely piece of work. I cannot stop listening to "See Me Shining," although it's a constant reminder to me that he's married. Damn it...
The ScriptThe Script by The Script
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $4.49
A new Irish group that was another discovery on VH1 for me. This is one of the few You Oughta Know artists I've seen where everything of theirs is really worth a listen. Plus, the vid for "The Man Who Can't Be Moved" is very stunning
ObliviousOblivious
Buy new: $23.99 / Used from: $47.32
This is only here because Seventh Heaven isn't there to put up, but even though I know almost no Japanese, they have better voices than most Japanese singers I've heard. Blame their arrival to Anime Boston for this. Fave songs: "Oblivious," "Sprinter," and the absolutely beautiful "Kimi Ga Hikari Ni Kaeteiku."
Black Holes and RevelationsBlack Holes and Revelations by Muse
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $8.96
Think Coldplay with a really sexy groove. This and Absolution are their best. Plus these songs will forever be associated with movies such as Twilight and Watchmen. I still can't win "Knights of Cydonia" on Guitar Hero, though.
CloserCloser by Josh Groban
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $3.50
Every song, even the ones in other languages are worth a listen. I give thanks to my roommate for really exposing me to him. I especially love "Oceano", "Si Volvieras A Mi", "Per Te", "My Confession", "Remember When It Rained", and of course, "You Raise Me Up."
Little EarthquakesLittle Earthquakes by Tori Amos
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $0.01
One of the best female voices out there. Out of all her stuff, this is the only full album of hers that I can truly appreciate. Highlights: "Crucify," "Winter," and "Precious Things."
SpiritSpirit by Leona Lewis
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $5.46
The beauty and presence of Mariah Carey but the sensibility of Celine Dion. I dare anyone to not be moved by "Bleeding Love." Now her new song "Better in Time" is doing quite well too, so don't expect her to go anywhere soon.
The Joshua TreeThe Joshua Tree by U2
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $1.99
I had to save this for last because this is one of the greatest albums of all time! I am madly in love with Bono's gorgeous, passionate voice on this album and hopelessly addicted to "With or Without You." Of course there is "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and "Where The Streets Have No Name." Oh damn it, listen to all of it! This and Achtung Baby...
