![]() | Great Recordings Of The Century - Dinu Lipatti by Dinu Lipatti
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $6.99 Subtlety and grace mark Lipatti's every interpretation. The Bach, in particular, approaches perfection. Remarkably good sound from this 50's vintage recording.
![]() | Bach: Das Wohltemperierte Klavier
Buy new: $25.98 / Used from: $21.18 The most beautiful rendition I've heard. While avoiding any romanticism, Fellner brings out the emotions living within these timeless compositions. Gould, while utterly different, extracts a whole other set of felicities from these works. Richter and Schiff don't find their way into the player anywhere near as often.
![]() | J. S. Bach: The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book II
Buy new: $33.98 / Used from: $21.99 A subtle and varied performance of Book II. Aldwell brings out the expressive potential of these pieces without becoming extravagant. A nice complement to Fellner's Book I.
![]() | Bach: Die Kunst der Fuge
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $42.04 Bach made beautiful, yet informed by a complex spectrum of emotions. Perhaps Sokolov's take is influenced by Gould, but the depths here sound ominously Russian.
![]() | A State of Wonder: The Complete Goldberg Variations (1955 & 1981) by Johann Sebastian Bach
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $12.32 Gould unravels the twining melodies in Bach's polyphony. His view is one steeped in reverance and obsession. I'm a big fan of all his Bach recordings - less so re his takes on other composers.
![]() | Beethoven: Piano Sonatas Nos. 29 "Hammerklavier" & 32, Op. 111
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $4.46 Every phrase feels shaped by thought, and so sounds involving - it's like being asked into a conversation with an interesting, intelligent artist. Beautiful remaster too.
![]() | Beethoven: Piano Sonatas [Box Set]
Buy new: $58.99 / Used from: $35.99 Beethoven brimming with urgency and excitement. Gilels can be frightening, rapturous, and utterly overwhelming. The 'named' sonatas are all tremendous, and a sampler disc is available. Of the others the performances of the Opus 2, Opus 31, and Opus 109 and 110, sonatas are my favourites.
![]() | Beethoven: The Late Piano Sonatas
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $5.52 A sense of mastery and judgement create performances of wide appeal. A lovely counterpoint to Gilels more fervent approach. Opus 111 feels perfectly measured.
![]() | Brahms: The Late Piano Music; Handel and Paganini Variations
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $7.88 Stephen Kovacevich's Handel variations are mesmerising. He unfolds the music so that it is perpetually fresh yet, once finished, perfect (almost inevitable). One of my absolute favourite recordings.
![]() | Johannes Brahms: Piano Sonata No.1 and No.2
Buy used from: $9.45 Somehow Richter manages to sound light and profound within the one interpretation. The music sings and rides a joyous rhythm. The sound quality, however, is a little astringent.
![]() | Chopin: Waltzes Nos. 1-14
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $6.64 This is a little like listening to music in a dream. The notes are set into motion as if by a breeze, rather than by human hands. Lipatti died of cancer, aged 33, but all his recordings are priceless.
![]() | Chopin: 24 Preludes
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $9.89 The ideal blend of tonal richness, passion, and objectivity. Sokolov makes each prelude unique. His faultless technique is at the service of his immense musicality. This disc is also to be found as part of a box set of Sokolov's recordings.
![]() | Arthur Rubinstein - Chopin 19 Nocturnes (Vol. 49)
Buy new: $20.97 / Used from: $15.59 Rubinstein's beautiful performances from the 60's enjoy absolutely stunning recorded sound. I prefer sampling these one or two at a time. It's churlish to criticize a musician of the genius of Rubinstein, but I find his playing evokes similar emotions in me no matter what the piece - an idiosyncratic reaction, possibly.
![]() | Claude Debussy: Préludes, Vol. 1; Images
Buy used from: $11.19 Michelangeli was renowned for his perfectionism, and here he sculpts each prelude exquisitely. Whether we're walking along "A Path through the Snow", or marvelling at the "Underwater Cathedral", he brings each piece to life. The clarity of texture is out of this world.
![]() | Murray Perahia Plays Franck & Liszt
Buy used from: $2.07 The Franck Choral,Prelude et Fugue is the unexpected highlight. Which is saying something when the Liszt is this good. Perahia's playing takes every opportunity to bring out the warmth in the scores.
![]() | Grieg: Lyric Pieces / Emil Gilels
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.43 The fire of Gilels is tempered into fields of sheer beauty. Lyricism in abundance.
![]() | Handel: Keyboard Suites, Vol. 1
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $12.00 Buoyant with energy, these suites dance and twirl. Gavrilov and Richter are ideal interpreters both. Great recorded sound.
![]() | Richter plays Haydn, Chopin, Beethoven, Schumann, & Rachmaninov (BBC)
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $11.49 Spectacular playing of Haydn's piano sonata No.37 in E - likewise for Schumann's Etudes Symphoniques, Op.13. Richter was esteemed for his command of the structure of works - he makes each phrase a coherent part of the larger scheme.
![]() | György Ligeti Edition 3: Works for Piano (Etudes, Musica Ricercata) - Pierre-Laurent Aimard
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $4.75 One of the great piano works of the twentieth century, Ligeti's etudes here find a seminal reading. Aimard shares his understanding of this complex music - vivid, angular, thrilling.
![]() | Nikolai Demidenko Plays Liszt
Buy new: $12.98 / Used from: $32.73 This enormous and, frankly, overwrought piece allows a pianist to display an astonishing range of tonal colour. Demidenko revels in the challenge. Pletnev and Pogorelich also boast fine recordings.
![]() | Olivier Messiaen: Complete Organ Works [Box Set]
Buy new: $84.98 / Used from: $40.00 Messiaen's keyboard music is a world unto itself. While his piano works are fascinating, these organ pieces are just that much more diverse. Fabulous performance and sound too.
![]() | Mozart: Piano Sonatas, Vol. 1
Buy used from: $5.88 Both volumes are stunning. Klien delivers quintessential performances that outshine most, if not all, others.
![]() | Mozart: Piano Sonatas K.310, 331 & 533/494
Buy new: $7.98 / Used from: $3.99 One of my supreme favourite recordings. Perahia is just luminous here. Reminiscent of Lipatti in tone, and with a joyous sense of rhythm, he is the complete Mozarian.
![]() | Mozart: The Complete Piano Concertos [Box Set]
Buy new: $71.99 / Used from: $73.41 Following on from the previous entry - Perahia's concertos are equally distinguished. To sample these, the individual disc with Nos.9 & 21 is a great introduction.
![]() | Mozart: The Piano Sonatas [Box Set]
Buy new: $34.99 / Used from: $25.00 More Mozart, true: but how can you go past these performances. Slightly more supple and varied than Klien, Uchida bends Mozart to her more complex sensibility. Unmissable.
![]() | Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No. 3; Saint-Saëns: Piano Concerto No. 2
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $7.23 Absolutely stunning remaster - what was a coarse transfer in the old 'Testament' edition, is now sublime. Gilels is a tremendous force, and his piano is firmly in the foreground.
![]() | Ravel: Piano Concerto in G; Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No. 4
Buy used from: $24.99 The Ravel is unsurpassable. The piece itself is inflected with jazz, and the energy and irreverance of the early twentieth century. Other performances don't really come close.
![]() | Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 12 & No. 4; Debussy: Hommage à Rameau; Ravel: Gaspard de la Nuit
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $10.82 Again the Ravel takes centre stage. Keyboard wizardry, primarily in terms of control and tone. Michelangeli makes sense of the score, where others offer just a flurry of notes (although Pogorelich almost recreates this performance).
![]() | Scarlatti: Sonaten
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $5.25 Jewel-like offerings from Pogorelich. There are many wonderful Scarlatti discs available - Walter Klien's is, perhaps, even more special, but sadly appears out of print.
![]() | Schubert: The Late Piano Sonatas, D. 958-960
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $24.78 Wondrous performances of pieces of great emotional depth. Schiff's insights and nuances of tone are astonishing. An absolute favourite. Definitely a desert-island set.
![]() | Mitsuko Uchida Plays Schubert [Box Set]
Buy new: $52.99 / Used from: $48.22 Lovely flowing performances, with shadows and darkness along with the colours and light. Superb recorded sound.
![]() | Schubert: Impromptus, Opp. 90 & 142
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $3.82 This later set of digital recordings offer fantastic strength - Schubert sounds powerful and authoratative in Brendel's hands, yet the elegance remains. Kempff's recording from the 60's is another favourite.
![]() | Emil Gilels Edition [Box Set]
Buy used from: $34.29 A wealth of music in this box, but the Scriabin piano sonata, No.3, is especially remarkable. Recorded in 1984, the year prior to Gilels death, the piece is made to sound haunting and, conversely, startling.
![]() | Shostakovich: 24 Preludes and Fugues, Op. 87
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $11.59 These pieces were written in response to Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier - Scherbakov's performances are utterly transfixing. I return to this set far more often than to Nikolayevna's or Jarrett's - although these are also very fine.
