![]() | A Proper Introduction to Robert Johnson: Cross Road Blues by Robert Johnson
Buy used from: $1.99 The fountain from which it all flows. When it comes to single-disc Robert Johnson, there are many choices out there. This British import has everything you need - all 29 songs. No alternate takes, but they aren't necessary. A beautiful remastering. Buy this one, because this label is trying to do right with this music.

![]() | The Complete Bukka White by Bukka White
Buy used from: $18.97 Bukka was one of those little known guys from the early days who was rediscovered a few decades on. However, this is no mellow Mississippi John Hurt. This is haunting stuff. Just listen to that forlorn vibrato on "When Can I Change My Clothes?" and "Pinebluff, Arkansas". Amazing.

![]() | The Anthology: 1947-1972 by Muddy Waters
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $19.94 Part preacher, part blues loverman, blues shouter extrordinaire. Muddy was what happened when Delta blues made the great leap to Chicago. My devotion for these originals makes me hate the rock groups that covered some of these songs in the 70's. Paul Rodgers should be shot in the face.

![]() | The Definitive Collection by Howlin' Wolf
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $8.86 Howlin' Wolf had such PRESENCE. That voice is just huge. The savage power and paranoia of such tracks as "Evil" and "Killing Floor" is phenomenal. It isn't all spookiness however, as the fun of "300 Pounds of Heavenly Joy" and "Wang Dang Doodle" show.

![]() | Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs by Derek and the Dominos
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $3.86 Clapton has made more traditional bluesy stuff in his later years, but this was where he FELT it as a young man. A crushing love for his friend's wife (not to mention heroin, too) cause this one to scream from the heart like nothing else he's done since.

![]() | His Best :(Little Walter)The Chess 50th Anniversary Collection by Little Walter
Buy new: $7.97 / Used from: $5.11 Listening to Muddy Waters, I noticed that beautiful distorted harp in the background. Little Walter was Muddy's harmonica player. Devastating stuff. In the early days of electric blues, they would just play so LOUD!
|
![]() | Best of the Animals by The Animals
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.30 Yeah, they may have been white English kids who were copping off of the masters, but no one except for the Rolling Stones (and I mean EARLY Stones) pulled it off with such conviction. And their version of John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom" just blows up in your face.
|
![]() | Black Snake Moan
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $7.98 Love this movie, love this soundtrack. This is pretty much the first time since "Crossroads" in '86 that southern electric blues has featured prominently in a film. The sequence in the film where Samuel L. Jackson plays "Black Snake Moan" is really spooky.

![]() | It Serves You Right to Suffer by John Lee Hooker
Buy new: $6.98 / Used from: $5.00 I could've put in one of a dozen John Lee Hooker compilations, but this album is as good a start as any. A prime early '60s recording. The cold despair and anger of the title track and "Country Boy" are just awe-inspiring. One of his strongest albums ever. You can't resist this title!
|
![]() | Led Zeppelin 1 by Led Zeppelin
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $1.39 Led Zeppelin later strayed away into Valhalla, Middle-Earth, etc., but I make a strong case for their first album. They were never this bluesy again. The fuzzbox crunch and youthful vigor they attack every song with is just amazing. Nowadays, at least 15 years since I couldn't stand "Stairway to Heaven" or "Kashmir" anymore, I still crank this one pretty often.
|
![]() | Mojo Hand by Lightnin' Hopkins
Buy new: $21.98 / Used from: $21.97 It's Lightnin', baby. Great acoustic blues by one of the masters.
|
![]() | Born Under a Bad Sign by Albert King
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.95 When hard electric blues met Stax horns. Smooth, but still hot 'n heavy. He shoulda been huge in the 60's.
|
![]() | Live Wire/Blues Power by Albert King
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $3.88 His studio records contained a lot of polish, but Albert was just shattering live. Just see the song "Blues Power", where he straps on his flying V live at the Fillmore and shoes some hippies how it's really done. Highly recommended.

![]() | Live at Montreux 1982 & 1985 by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.08 God, he's been gone a long time. SRV was one of those rare talents who only comes along once in a blue moon. I could've listed a compilation or studio album, but he really shined live. Stevie was the real deal. He nailed the blues in a way more genuine than the straight up theft manner of George Thorogood.

![]() | Don't Turn Me From Your Door: John Lee Hooker Sings His Blues by John Lee Hooker
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $3.00 Another great Hooker album I found in a $5 bin somewhere. Pulled from two sessions that were 5 years apart ('56 and '61), it all ties together pretty good. "Wobbling Baby" is great.
|
![]() | The Sky Is Crying: The History of Elmore James by Elmore James
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $4.99 A no-brainer, sure, but it took me a long time to get around to this. Devastating guitar playing, great singing too. Elmore was one of the shining lights to come out of Chicago and an influence on many subsequent artists.
|
![]() | Not The Same Old Blues Crap II by Various Artists
Buy new: $4.98 / Used from: $2.38 A sampler from the amazing Fat Possum label. This is a great album of modern pure-blooded Delta bluesmen. Buy this one new. This is a whole lotta good blues for $5. There are two other volumes of this as well.
