Buy used from: $9.70 Ok, so Mary Poppins isn't your normal musical. But Mary Poppins won an Academy Award for Julie Andrews because it's a wonderful movie and as great musical. My favorite song is Chim Chim Chiree. Great song, great movie.

Buy used from: $9.50 The studio cut corners on this movie and it shows in the scenery. The studio expected Brigadoon, which was made at the same time, to do better than this movie. However, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers came out on top. It was a cheaply made film that just somehow worked!

Buy new: $4.98 / Used from: $2.68 I love this movie. All the original cast from the Broadway production is in it. The only difference is Doris Day plays the female lead, which made some of the other cast memebers in the movie resent her.

Buy used from: $3.29 Good Doris Day movie. She plays a secondary part, but it's a good part. Kirk Douglas cannot fake playing horn very well, but that doesn't matter when you get drawn into the story.

Buy used from: $5.54 Judy Garland shows off her comedic timing in this movie as a woman who is picked off a street to star in a dance team with Fred Astaire's character. Interesting to note that Fred Astaire came out of semi retirement to film this because Gene Kelly who was supposed to film this, had broken his ankle playing volleyball in his backyard.

Buy used from: $2.44 This was Gene Kelly's first movie. He gained pointers from Judy Garland who was already a pro by this time. Excellent film about a selfish cad who learns the value of love and sacrifice in a time of war.

 | The Benny Goodman Story
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $6.74 Ok,not really a musical but a great movie with music and Steve Allen. He was mostly a comedian but he exercised his acting chops in this film and played a pretty good fake clarinet. Donna Reed also stars.

This is a great movie and if you can latch onto a copy, I highly recommend it. There's a great dance scene in it with Gene and Fred Kelly. Jose Ferrer, Rosemary Clooney's ex husband stars as composer Sigmund Romberg.

 | Life with Judy Garland - Me and My Shadows
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $5.28 Ok, so this isn't exactly a musical. But there are musical elements in this film. Judy Davis is absolutely wonderful as Judy Garland. She hits all the right notes as Judy and you almost forget that it's Davis, not Garland in the role. It's so realistic. Davis actually studied up Judy Garland's moves so she could accurately portray the ill-fated star.

Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $4.93 This movie was advertised as a 'movie with music' which is an apt description. Barbra Streisand directs and stars in this movie that seamlessly puts music and song into the dialogue. Mandy Pantinkin, pre Princess Bride years, plays Avigdor, Ashel's (Yentl's) best friend who falls in love with her.
