The Pink Panther Films: Best to Worst

Ironically, the best Pink Panther film has nothing to do with it (the diamond or character). Sellers is at his bumbling best here as Clouseau, who is convinced, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, that sweet maid Maria Gambrelli is innocent of murder. Facts, Hercule, facts!

The film that started it all is nearly as funny as SHOT. David Niven is perfect as Sir Charles Litton, aka The Phantom, the jewel thief that Clouseau can't seem to catch (and who is bedding Clouseau's wife; sacre bleu!), and the likes of Robert Wagner as Litton's nephew George and Capucine as Mrs. Clouseau add to the fun.

The fourth Panther film by Sellers & Edwards is the best of the 1970s Panther films, as it has Herbert Lom's Dreyfus as the main villain, who has finally put his murderous feelings about Clouseau towards global conquest. Completely ridiculous, yes, but also very funny.

This and REVENGE are about on par in terms of quality, as both have slow spots and some pretty horrendous dialogue at times. However, the first and last 20 minutes or so are flawless (a little too much Christopher Plummer as The Phantom and overlong sight gags in between).

The last offical Sellers/Edwards collaboration, this has a lame bordering-on-'80s-song by Henry Mancini, awkward bordello scene, and some terrible gangster dialogue (call up Coppola next time, Blakey), but it also has Sellers in a fat suit and many classic Clouseau disguises.

As much as there is to cringe at in Steve's effort, this is still funnier than the post-Sellers films, as this one at least had good intentions (I think). Kevin Kline is actually very funny as Dreyfus, and when Martin isn't directly aping Sellers, he has some bright moments. Now about Beyonce...

With Sellers gone, it looked like it was time to let the franchise go- No, wait, Blake Edwards doesn't give up so easily. Ted Wass (from SOAP... ok) is American Clouseau Clifton Sleigh, who's assigned to find the missing inspector. He can't be found, alas. Some funny moments (Wass is a good physical comedian), but overall pretty lame.

Using unused footage of Sellers, Edwards concocted an often embarrassingly bad film about Clouseau disappearing, and an intrusive reporter (ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS' Joanna Lumley) interviewing past Panther characters to somehow help find him. As much as Edwards called it a final tribute, I call it something else: unfunny. It can't get any worse...

I take it back. This is bad. Very bad. Roberto "I'm clearly Italian" Benigni as the son of Inspector Clouseau, the famous French detective? "Well, he's supposed to be the child of Clouseau and Maria Gambrelli from SHOT," you say? I'll just have to find 99 more reasons that this movie is the worst.
