The Wrong Side of Paris (Modern Library Classics)The Wrong Side of Paris (Modern Library Classics) by Honoré de Balzac
Buy new: $11.86 / Used from: $5.50
A great tale of reconciliation and forgiveness. Great describtions and wonderful lessons to be taken from.
The Knight of Maison-Rouge: A Novel of Marie Antoinette (Modern Library Classics)The Knight of Maison-Rouge: A Novel of Marie Antoinette (Modern Library Classics) by Alexandre Dumas
Buy new: $11.66 / Used from: $1.49
Absolutely loved it. The way Dumas build up the story to its climax and the way the narrative ends, something I have personally not encountered and expected. The spirit of love is to be found in here.
The Red and the Black: A Chronicle of the Nineteenth Century (Oxford World's Classics)The Red and the Black: A Chronicle of the Nineteenth Century (Oxford World's Classics) by Stendhal
Buy used from: $0.49
The first time I have heard of Stenhal I knew that I needed to read his first master work. After 3 days of intense reading and reposing I must say that Stendhal's manner of writing is quite unique. Definately pick this one up (and may I recommend to get the Oxford World Classics translations).
Madame Bovary (Oxford World's Classics)Madame Bovary (Oxford World's Classics) by Gustave Flaubert
Buy used from: $0.88
Just finished it today (06-21-07) after two days of non-stop reading and pondering, and I must say that Flaubert's art (yes I consider Madame Bovary art) to be extremely counterpositioned to Romanticism. Decadence of the mind in selfish indulgencies at its best presented and the immediate effects upon the main character and people around her. Read this one.
Lost Illusions (Modern Library Classics)Lost Illusions (Modern Library Classics) by Honoré de Balzac
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $3.98
Have not read this one yet, but I shall start tomorrow (or after I have finished Nana by Emile Zola). I am really looking forward to this one. :)
The Kill (Modern Library Classics)The Kill (Modern Library Classics) by Émile Zola
Buy new: $12.48 / Used from: $4.96
Just like many more books in this list, I have not read this one either. The premise sounds intriguing and it is by Zola. Just put it here since I will definately have it finished before my summer break ends.
Nana (Penguin Classics)Nana (Penguin Classics) by Émile Zola
Buy new: $7.92 / Used from: $0.01
I actually own the Oxford World Classics version because it was cheaper (I got it for $6 from a local bookstore, new). Have not read it, but I shall soon.
Les Miserables (Everyman's Library)Les Miserables (Everyman's Library) by Victor Hugo
Buy new: $18.48 / Used from: $9.48
Heard nothing but praises. Had to get it. Have not read it, nor seen any performances or movie adaptations. Just ordered it today through amazon. Cannot wait till I shall posses it in my own hands. Prefered the Hardcover version from Everyman's Library, not only based on recommendations, but also for the importance I feel this work will have on me.
The Charterhouse of Parma (Oxford World's Classics)The Charterhouse of Parma (Oxford World's Classics) by Stendhal
Buy new: $11.95 / Used from: $3.50
Once again I opted for the Oxford World Classics translation of Stendhal. I compared and contrasted it with the Modern Library one and Penguin as well, and once again I prefered the lucid translation of Oxford more. Either way get this one. Stendhal at his best.
Germinal (Penguin Classics)Germinal (Penguin Classics) by Émile Zola
Buy new: $8.00 / Used from: $3.92
To finish this list (well for now, because I have feeling two, three more books might be added to the final counting of my reading procedure for this summer). But I figure that this list should be sufficient. I opted for the Penguin translation, since I liked it more over the Oxford one.
