This was Winner's first film to make a splash outside of England thanks to the presence of Orson Welles in one of his best 1960s roles. Oliver Reed's rejection of the material life with some stinging criticism of swinging 60s London still holds up well. Last film to be condemned by the Catholic Legion Of Decency.

Michael Winner's first Western was a thought provoking examination of gun control in the Old West and its consequences. The first of his films to feature several major older Hollywood stars.
The NightcomersThe Nightcomers
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $8.10
The first of Winner's films to be harshly criticised, this prequel to Henry James' TURN OF THE SCREW features an interesting Marlon Brando performance and some then shocking S&M scenes (before LAST TANGO).
Chato's LandChato's Land
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $3.24
The first of 6 films that Winner made with Charles Bronson. This Western features an all star cast and explores racism as a group of bigots try and track down an Apache renegade.

Burt Lancaster returns in this pre-Watergate story of dirty tricks and double dealings within the CIA. It reunites Lancaster with Alain Delon (THE LEOPARD) and Paul Scofield (THE TRAIN).
Death WishDeath Wish
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.38
The most celebrated and notorious of all of Michael Winner's films. Its pro-vigilante stance made it wildly popular with audiences (there were 4 sequels) while turning the director into a critical pariah. Still highly effective today. The shock factor has diminished but not the outrage.

Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $2.74
Just as fellow Brit compatriot Ken Russell followed his most controversial film (THE DEVILS) with a G rated one (THE BOY FRIEND), so Winner followed DEATH WISH with this family friendly, starladen (over 60 cameos) salute to the early days of movies. Hardly subtle and rather uneven but not without its moments.
The SentinelThe Sentinel
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $5.18
The beginning of the end of Winner's career as a commercial mainstream filmmaker. THE SENTINEL is a fascinating, entertaining, thoughly preposterous horror film with another all-star cast and some gruesome special effects including an ending lifted from Tod Browning's FREAKS.
The Big SleepThe Big Sleep
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $7.99
Howls of outrage came from film noir purists over this updated remake of the 1946 classic (it's set in 1978 Britain). While Sarah Miles is no Lauren Bacall and Mitchum is really too old to play Marlowe, the rest of the cast is stronger and this version follows the Chandler original much more closely.

Michael Winner's last film is a low key send-up of DEATH WISH and his own career as a filmmaker. A lot of fun but very, very British. Made in 1998, it features Oliver Reed's last completed performance. Winner has since become a celebrated food critic (Winner's Dinners) but he still knows how to push people's buttons.
