![]() | Rubber Soul (1990) by The Beatles
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $2.89 A bridge from early Beatles to experimental Beatles, that should suffice as the best introduction. 10/10
![]() | Revolver [UK] by The Beatles
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $2.32 A GREAT album through and through....experimental and yet commerical at the same time. Brilliant album. 10/10
![]() | The Beatles (The White Album) by The Beatles
Buy used from: $8.72 Might be my favorite, perfect in the mixing age. I like the whole "warts and all" aspect of this record....has their best and worst sides....but the best is the best of their career! 10/10
![]() | Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $3.28 So much has been written about this masterpiece, not quite the best starting point, but still FABulous 10/10
![]() | A Hard Day's Night
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $2.93 Maybe the best pure Pop record ever made, ridiculously catchy and perfect! This is pure songwriting genius. 10/10
![]() | Magical Mystery Tour (1990) by The Beatles
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $2.29 A few mild clunkers but still a great record, it's high's are fabulous. The first not quite perfect Beatles album. 8.5/10.
![]() | Abbey Road (1990) by The Beatles
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $2.49 2nd half suite is pretty stunning, first half is rather a hodge podge. Lots of folks love it, i think a slight let down, but still a fabulous album. 8/10
![]() | Help! [UK] by The Beatles
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $1.99 Again the high points are great (Ticket to Ride is amongst their best songs). A few clunkers though. Still very much recommended or else it wouldn't make the list. 8/10
![]() | Please Please Me (1990) by The Beatles
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $1.95 I love this one for all the energy and would rate it a perfect 10/10, but I'm more in the minority, this is amongst my faves though. 10/10.
![]() | Imagine by John Lennon
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $9.03 A great album even with the slight overproduction from Phil (somethign that foreshadowed the rest of John's career). Not quite as good maybe as Plastic Ono Band, but more commercial. 8.5/10.
![]() | John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band by John Lennon
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $9.59 Amongst his best work (including albums above), a masterpiece, but not the easiest of listens so it falls to this spot. Still you should be happy with it! 10/10.
![]() | Past Masters, Vol. 2 by The Beatles
Buy used from: $2.17 A compilation that feels like a compilation but this includes some of their best work and is therefore absolutely essential even if it's incoherent. Rain, Paperback Writer, and We Can Work it Out all make it more than worthy. 10/10.
![]() | Past Masters, Vol. 1 by The Beatles
Buy used from: $2.46 Not quite as good as Vol. 2. but hardly bad, some gems here too including "I want to Hold Your Hand", "She Loves You", "She's a Woman" and another lost classic "I Call Your Name"...amongst many other high points. 9/10.
![]() | Flaming Pie by Paul McCartney
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $1.88 Shocking that it took Paul 26 years to come up with his best album, but he did. A few clunkers (I wish the Used to Be Bad/Steve Miller stuff was better). But some FABULOUS songs that outweigh the holes. A great record that challenges for best solo Beatles record. I rediscovered this in my collection recently and love it more than ever! 8/10.
![]() | Beatles for Sale (1990) by The Beatles
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $3.00 Very much a hodgepodge but it has a lot of "must haves" including the great Buddy Holly Cover (Words of Love) and forgotten masterpiece (Every Little Thing).....8.5/10!
![]() | All Things Must Pass [BOXED EDITION] by George Harrison
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $19.40 GREATNESS meets pretentiousness meets religion. One of the best albums in the entire greater Beatles cannon, but at times very overproduced and the "jams" are utterly forgettable. Still a 10/10 and in my top 40 ever made--aka better than some of the above but more eclectic! still a 10/10.
![]() | Anthology 3 by The Beatles
Buy new: $31.49 / Used from: $14.95 A compilation sure, but one that plays more like a cohesive unit....the best of that series and the only one in the essential to buy category. Worth a purchase. The other 2 have moments but are more discretionary. These are more like rock-biography-music-pieces. A great album, even if many of the songs were better on the official releases. 9/10.
![]() | Let It Be (1990) by The Beatles
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $3.50 Still a better buy than the "naked" album....Spectorized to the extreme but to the benefit of these shoddier sessions. This one has some fabulous moments and is essential. 8/10.
![]() | Live at the BBC by The Beatles
Buy new: $30.99 / Used from: $7.24 Amongst their better works and a ton of fun. Solid live recordings and well worth the money (buy it used and new for MUCH less too). Essential in my book adds creedence to the Beatles as a live act. 10/10
![]() | Band on the Run by Paul McCartney & Wings
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $3.89 A solid album full of many of Paul's best (even the loads of filler are at least enjoyable)....too crispy cleanly produced though...but one of Paul's best and for its high points essential. 8/10.
![]() | Chaos and Creation in the Backyard by Paul McCartney
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $1.01 Recently Paul's had the best string of his career and Chaos is a fabulous record. Fine Line, Jenny Wren, and the dynamics are good but take a bit to click. Still if Paul had been making this kind of music immediately post Beatles, he'd likely be more critically respected than Lennon by now....8.5/10.
![]() | Brainwashed by George Harrison
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $2.63 Not quite a perfect record, but definitely the only other essential George album. George is actually in great voice and his songwriting is very solid. More essential than any of the Wilburies stuff or the hodge podge post All things solo career....now if they could just get him a good greatest hits to cover that period....Dark Horse Years is terrible. 8/10.
![]() | Ram by Paul & Linda McCartney
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $7.04 Too Many People, Ram On, Backseat of my Car, Uncle Admiral, Monkberry Moon Delight....enough good tunes to make this spotty-ish record still good enough to make an essential buy. An 8/10 even with it's fluffier moments.
![]() | Lennon Legend: The Very Best of John Lennon by John Lennon
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $3.50 His best compilation. John had enough good moments in the post Imagine era to make a greatest hits essential....and I think he could have gotten back on track without his untimely death....but his mid 70's-end career was ultimately much much much better than Paul's.....8.5/10
![]() | With the Beatles (1990) by The Beatles
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $3.24 THe Only weaker regular Beatle record, it's still a must have by virtue of its cultural impact. This has a few gems that cause it to be a must have "All I've Got to Do", "You've Really Got a Hold" and the forgotten gem "Not a Second Time" make it a worthy purchase. History adds 1.5 pts... 8/10
![]() | Photograph: The Very Best of Ringo Starr by Ringo Starr
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $10.15 My next to last of the essential Beatles--of course you could collect more for megafans, but this is enough. Ringo had enough decent/solid moments to give him a rare recommendation. At least 10 fun classics on here and nothing is really bad at all. It's actually one of the better Beatle Comps. Ringo now can get a little credit for his heavily helped solo career. Buy with confidence. 8/10
![]() | The Beatles Anthology
Buy new: $57.99 / Used from: $43.94 This is one of the best documentaries ever made, even if it's on the long side, it covers everything and is better than any book to date.....a 9/10 (s'more editing would have made a perfect 10/10). Essential viewing!
![]() | Wingspan (Hits & History) by Paul McCartney
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $6.25 It's so dirt cheap that it can be essential even if 50% of it is fluff that shouldn't be forgotten, this has enough to make a more than 1 cd decent/classic mix. I like the non-hits disc much more than the hits, but they both have more than enough blah moments/flaws. If the price goes higher than $15 though, I'd say forget this one. 7/10
