Beauty and the Devil [VHS]Beauty and the Devil [VHS]
Buy used from: $29.95
My favorite version of the Faust legend. Michel Simon - the devil's representative - creates a marvelous character of diabolical mischievousness. The film is neither as dark nor as melodramatic as the better known silent German version of "Faust."

The story of a French pastor, Andre Trocme, who inspires an entire village to hide Jews during the German occupation. A film that moves us to seek goodness...Radiant

George Bernard Shaw's marvelous satire of religion, capitalism, and politics. Rex Harrison is as splendid in this film as he is in "My Fair Lady.
Daens [VHS]Daens [VHS]
Buy used from: $4.36
19th century, Belgium. Gripping film about a priest's struggle to better human rights and the Vatican's resistance to his humanitarian efforts. The metaphor for the dark side of the industrial revolution is the gigantic spinning loom clashing back and forth with a sinister, demonic energy.
A Self Made Hero [VHS]A Self Made Hero [VHS]
Buy used from: $3.16
A man who accomplishes nothing during World War II decides to recreate his life as a "lie" by masquerading as a hero of the French Resistance. Quite believable. [For a true depiction of the lives of resistance fighters, I highly recommend viewing "Lucie Aubrac" or "Army of Shadows"]

Skyscraper Souls [VHS]Skyscraper Souls [VHS]
Buy used from: $21.49
Scandal (and sex) in the city. Warren William is mesmerizing as a suave tycoon who controls the destinies of human lives who intersect with his vision of erecting the tallest building in New York. Other roles where he plays the ruthless capitalist include "Employee's Entrance" or the (very) racy "Gold Diggers of 1933"...one of the marvelous musicals in the "Busby Berkeley Collection."
7 Up in the Soviet Union [VHS]7 Up in the Soviet Union [VHS]

A look back at communist Russia through the magical eyes of its children. The questions are so intelligent...and the answers so honest...that this film has a timeless quality about the hopes and fears of seven year olds.
Lili [VHS]Lili [VHS]
Buy used from: $18.73
A homeless waif is rescued from despair by four puppets in a carnival. The dark undertones are brightened by a charming tale of love misguided which finally finds its true home. Dedicated fans of Leslie Caron will also treasure her performances as the pretty ingenue in "Gigi," the love interest in "An American in Paris" as well as her delightful Cinderella in the "Glass Slipper.
Peter Brook's King LearPeter Brook's King Lear
Buy used from: $100.00
If you see only one Lear in your lifetime, let it be this. A king's mistake at the end of his life thrusts him through rejection, sorrow, despair, and finally profound understanding of man's role in the cosmos.
5 Fingers [VHS]5 Fingers [VHS]
Buy used from: $4.92
A British embassy man delivers the D-Day secret to the Nazis...for cash. It details the dirty business of spying in a most realistic way. And James Mason makes the perfect spy - suave yet unsettling. This movie was my father's favorite espionage film, a high recommendation in light of the fact he himself spied on the Germans during this era.
Of Human Bondage (1964) [VHS]Of Human Bondage (1964) [VHS]

Emperor & the Nightingale [VHS]Emperor & the Nightingale [VHS]
Buy used from: $0.73
A Chinese emperor cages a nightingale for its song and then replaces it with a jeweled mechanical model. Only when the emperor becomes gravely ill and hears the true nightingale again does he appreciate the importance of the living bird. The illustrations look like Asian Museum Chinese paintings; the flute and gongs are a perfect balance to the art.
Carnival in Flanders [VHS]Carnival in Flanders [VHS]
Buy used from: $20.89
A Breughels painting come alive! When Spanish troops invade a Flemish town in the 17th century, the men hide while the women take charge of "affairs." A delicious satire with extravagent costumes.
Juliette of the Herbs [VHS]Juliette of the Herbs [VHS]

Menotti - Amahl and the Night Visitors [VHS]Menotti - Amahl and the Night Visitors [VHS]
Buy used from: $15.50
This is my box, this is my box...I never travel without my box." A crippled boy and his mother experience a miracle when they are visited by the three magi on their way to the nativity. I was moved to tears by Teresa Stratas' ability to portray a ferociously protective mother. Ironically, my two favorite family films - this one and the 1949 "The Secret Garden" - are not yet available on DVD.
Sylvia and the Phantom [VHS]Sylvia and the Phantom [VHS]

A truly sweet story set in a French chateau during the 1920's. A girl turning 16 discovers first love with assorted young suitors including a handsome ghost. One of those refreshing entertainments like "Topper, Miracle on 34th Street, Scrooge, or The Good Fairy" that one should return to ever so often.

Buy used from: $64.99
My God...what a performance! In the early 20th century, Nijinsky and Diaghilev reinvented ballet in a form so original, vivid, and exotic that Europe gasped in disbelief. This film gets you as close to that original experience as possible. For those interested in the rare dance performance of Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring", try the "Uwe Scholz" ballet version on DVD.
America America (B&W) [VHS]America America (B&W) [VHS]
Buy used from: $17.99
Early 20th century, Turkey. This is Elia Kazan's most personal movie. It's a story about his Greek uncle who desperately tries to leave prejudice and poverty in Anatolia for the land of promise that is America. Finally, in celluloid film we have a record of the foundational myth story of all immigrants.
The Revolt Of JobThe Revolt Of Job
Buy used from: $31.99
Aware that the Nazis are going to destroy their community and lives, a Jewish man (and his spouse) in a Hungarian village adopt a gentile boy to be their son in order to pass on "their heritage" to future generations. It is rare for a holocaust film to be uplifting...but this film does just that.
The Wind [VHS]The Wind [VHS]
Buy used from: $7.49
The Swedish director who made this silent film was one of the undisputed cinema greats of his era. The special effects are startling 80 years later. Victor Sjostrom's other silent masterpieces include the profoundly sad "He Who Gets Slapped" (with Lon Chaney) and a filmed version of Hawthorne's great story of adultery - "The Scarlet Letter.
Race for the Double Helix [VHS]Race for the Double Helix [VHS]
