Shout at the DevilShout at the Devil by Mötley Crüe
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $4.95
Motley Crue’s sophomore release is raw, edgy and dangerous. I was 15 when I first heard the title track and it blew me away. In my view, this is the most important hair-metal release…ever.
Pyromania [Deluxe Edition]Pyromania [Deluxe Edition] by Def Leppard
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $17.55
"Pyromania" features great melodies and harmonies with a hard rock edge that Def Leppard would never truly recapture. Most bands would kill to be able to write songs with "hooks" that were this addictive, and, for now, Def Leppard seemed to do it effortlessly.
Out of the CellarOut of the Cellar by Ratt
Buy new: $5.98 / Used from: $2.13
At this time, Ratt and Motely Crue were vying for hair-metal supremacy. Many argue that Ratt never surpassed this album, but I have a soft spot for “Dancing Undercover.”
WaspWasp by Wasp
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $8.80
Early W.A.S.P. might be best described as shock-rock with an obvious stylistic debt to Alice Cooper and Kiss. However, W.A.S.P. was not a mere gimmick. Blackie Lawless understood the art of writing memorable songs.
Stay HungryStay Hungry by Twisted Sister
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $3.63
This is Twisted Sister's commercial zenith featuring the hits “We’re Not Gonna Take It” and “I Wanna Rock.” Their previous albums rocked harder, but this is the album where everything came together for Twisted Sister.
Slippery When WetSlippery When Wet by Bon Jovi
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $3.32
The epitome of arena rock consisting of radio-ready songs with shout-along choruses. Unlike Motley Crue, there was never anything dangerous about Bon Jovi.
Night SongsNight Songs by Cinderella
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $3.91
When I was 15, I bought a various artists double cassette tape called “Vicious Vinyl.” My favourite song on this hard rock compilation was “Shake Me” by Cinderella. After purchasing "Nightsongs" I played it non-stop.
HysteriaHysteria by Def Leppard
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $2.98
This album was Def Leppard’s commercial pinnacle and was instrumental with regards to helping hair-metal cross-over in to the mainstream. In any event, this studio-slick album contains some of the best “hooks” ever recorded…in any musical genre.
Appetite for DestructionAppetite for Destruction by Guns N' Roses
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.85
This great album successfully recaptured the edginess and danger conveyed by Motley Crue’s "Shout." “Appetite” is wholly deserving of its legendary status. Indeed, "Sweet Child O' Mine" was a revelation.
WhitesnakeWhitesnake by Whitesnake
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.98
This is David Coverdale’s most successful Whitesnake album and an obvious attempt at attaining commercial nirvana. Nevertheless, Coverdale clearly possesses a great voice and this album features numerous stellar rock songs.
Open Up and Say...Ahh!Open Up and Say...Ahh! by Poison
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $3.95
This album consists of hedonistic, party-driven tunes where style clearly ruled over substance. As a band, Poison embodied the excesses of hair-metal taken to their logical conclusion.
Skid RowSkid Row by Skid Row
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.51
Sebastian Bach was arguably one of the most gifted singers in hair-metal. It was 1989, and with the emergence of grunge on the horizon, Skid Row had left their run a little too late. Nevertheless, this album contained numerous addictive tracks and, in my view, was perhaps the last great hair-metal release of the 80s.
