![]() | My Darling Clementine
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $6.93 (1946, John Ford) Probably my all-time favorite Western. Shoot-out at the OK corral. Director John Ford got the inside scoop of what really happened from Wyatt Earp. My favorite scene is when Henry Fonda dances with Cathy Downs at the church fund raiser. Victor Mature and Linda Darnell are equally wonderful.

![]() | Duel in the Sun
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $4.75 (1946, King Vido) Wow! What an incredible movie, on so many levels. One of the few westerns centered on a female, Jennifer Jones as Pearl Sanchez--she gives a fantastic performance, torn between the love of two brothers. Also a family saga. Great cinematography, great action, everything!

Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $3.59 (1953, Anthony Mann) An exciting story with lots of human interest. The hero, played by James Stewart, is tormented and neurotic. Distinguished performances by Robert Ryan, Janet Leigh, and James Stewart. Anthony Mann is one of the most significant directors of Westerns, and this is one of his best.

Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $4.93 (1956, Delmer Daves) A great great movie. Glenn Ford is perfect as Jubal, the man whose mother didn't love him. A young Charles Bronson, Ernest Borgnine are fine. Rod Steiger is a wonderfully evil villain. Valerie French is the incredibly seductive femme fatale, and Felcia Farr is the sweet and innocent good girl, who rides off into the mountains with Glenn Ford at the end.

John Wayne plays Chance, a sheriff trying to enforce justice, aided by his 3 deputies, Dean Martin, Walter Brennan, and Ricky Nelson. Dean Martin plays an alcoholic strugging to remain sober. Angie Dickinson provides a love interest. Lots of humor and wit and unusual situations.

![]() | Once Upon a Time in the West
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.78 (1969, Sergio Leone) Director Sergio Leone's greatest western, his masterpiece. Fonda plays a bad guy in this one, but the film is centered on the luscious Claudia Cardinale, whose husband is killed by evil railroad thugs. Charles Bronson plays the enigmatic Harmonica, who plays his harmonica instead of talking. A magnificent achievement. The Ennio Morricone score is powerful and deep.

![]() | The Wild Bunch - The Original Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $2.95 (1969, Sam Peckinpah) A masterpiece, and one of the most influential Western films. Pike is the aging leader of a band of outlaws who are being hunted by Deke, a former gang member who had been hired by the railroad company. The final shootout is the ultimate bloodbath, with lots of Peckinpah's trademark slo-mo violence.

Buy used from: $2.85 (1976, Clint Eastwood) My favorite Clint Eastwood western. Clint plays a man whose wife and son are killed by Union troops during the Civil War. He refuses to lay down his arms when the war is over, and is hunted. Finally he finds a new girlfriend, and makes peace with a hostile Indian tribe. Notable for its portrayal of Native Americans, and an all-around great story

![]() | The Last of the Mohicans (Director's Expanded Edition)
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $6.24 (1992, Michael Mann) Probably the most wildly romantic movie ever made. The music is perfect and very emotional. Takes place in the east, not the west, but still on what was then the frontier. No cowboys, but there are lots of Indians and warriors.
