This isn't necessarily the best book about Johnny Appleseed, but amazon limits me to 40 books total. There are plenty of books in print about Johnny Appleseed so you should have no trouble finding one to fit your child's reading level.

Substitute or add titles about Davy Crockett. I like this approach of studying legend and folk tale of the frontier. One could also use Mike Fink and Paul Bunyan to make a reading unit out of tall tales.

There is are additional title in this series which I also assigned, including: Mountain Men of the West, The Quest for California's Gold, and The Rocky Mountain Fur Trade.

This book is ancient but I found nothing more current in print for children on the subject. The illustrations are alright and the book does contain information about the Ohio River Valley frontier that I have not found in other children's books.

I think of Collins' "Inside Laura's Little House" and "The World of Little House," "Inside" is the stronger of the pair. She also has a Little House craft book, but I didn't care much for it. I Obviously, those should read before the LIttle House books before the nonfiction Little House companion books.

This book was of particular interest to me because I grew up in the Western Reserve.

Again, this is just my own soft spot for Ohio history, so if you're not in Ohio, I'd omit this title.

Greenwood has two other pioneer titles with a holiday theme: "A Pioneer Thanksgiving" and "A Pioneer Christmas."

Gunderson has two other frontier cookbooks: "Oregon Trail Cooking" and "Pioneer Farm Cooking."

A more advanced middle school reader dealing with the Kentucky frontier.

Okay, Okay, I have "Sarah, Plain and Tall" by Patricia MacLachlan on my booklist, but I like this movie version with Glenn Close and Christopher Walken.
