No contest this year - this one is just on another level, I think. Sure the ending (yes, or lack thereof, wiseguys) is jarring, but that's the point - "you can't stop what's coming"...but dreams of the past may offer comfort. A masterpiece.

I don't know Fincher did it - a 2 1/2 hour procedural that manages to be completely gripping from start to finish. Great performances from Ruffalo & Downey, too, plus Brian Cox as Melvin Belli!
Before the Devil Knows You're DeadBefore the Devil Knows You're Dead
Buy new: $7.49 / Used from: $0.67
Criminally overlooked - one of those movies where people keep doing bad things because they're trying to cover up another bad thing they did, and things finally get so tense you can barely watch. Plus Marisa Tomei is pretty naked in it, so, um, again, criminally overlooked.

Besides 'Juno', the other feel-good movie among all of the serious, "downer" pictures. But-what happens after the "ending"? Is that the last time they see each other, or does he go back for her? I say he goes back - he HAS to go back, right?
Michael Clayton (Widescreen Edition)Michael Clayton (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $0.89
A 'popcorn' movie that's actually smart - like you used to get in the 70's with Redford or Beatty. It doesn't hurt that Tilda Swinton & Tom Wilkinson are brilliant in their supporting roles.
Eastern Promises (Widescreen Edition)Eastern Promises (Widescreen Edition)

A great, pulpy flick, full of menace. Too bloody for some, but hey, you'll never forget that fight scene in the bath house, will you? And Viggo Mortensen rules, by the way.
No End in SightNo End in Sight
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $4.94
A documentary about our post-invansion policies in Iraq. So much incompentency on display that you just want to weep - a completely troubling, gripping film.
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert FordThe Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $1.97
A bit long, but beautifully realized and completely absorbing the majority of the time. I thought Pitt did a nice job, and of course Casey Affleck's performance has been justly lauded.
