A list of great "best of" compilations (Part 1: single CDs)
By an Amazon.com customer
The Best of Dark Horse (1976-1989)The Best of Dark Horse (1976-1989) by George Harrison
Buy used from: $6.94
20 years after its original release date, and well over a decade after going out of print, this George Harrison compilation is still far from being obsolete, even after the complete Dark Horse catalog was remastered with bonus tracks. "Poor Little Girl" and "Cockamamie Business" have still to be re-released in remastered form, and in any case, the sequencing of this set flows wonderfully.
The Best of the Alan Parsons Project, Vol. 2The Best of the Alan Parsons Project, Vol. 2 by Alan Parsons Project
Buy used from: $0.81
This is here because it was my first Parsons CD, and the one that made me a devoted fan. Not any other title from his catalog had the impact in me this compilation had. Of course, the APP was an album entity, and if you only want the hits, this is sadly incomplete without the first volume. But the power of this concise collection is undeniable. Hard to top.
HitsHits by Joni Mitchell
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $6.00
If you want to have only one disc from Joni Mitchell, pick this one. If you haven't listened to Joni before, pick this one. Mrs. Mitchell touched my soul with this perfectly sequenced album. After the first track (the obscure "Urge For Going", a non-album track from the sixties) she had totally won me over. I had become a fan.
The Best of Mike Oldfield: ElementsThe Best of Mike Oldfield: Elements by Mike Oldfield
Buy used from: $5.49
I am a fan of Tubular Bells, but never had the time (or budget) to explore Oldfield's vast back catalog beyond TB. I had to make a compromise, and the result was to get this perfectly assembled collection of all the hits a casual fan might want.
Imagine (Original Soundtrack)Imagine (Original Soundtrack) by John Lennon
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $0.99
This choice will seem a sacrilege to some. This compilation is the soundtrack to the "Imagine" film, and as such, combines some of the best Lennon solo tracks with Beatles songs. The sequencing is so smooth, that it is my favorite JL compilation. One might argue that Lennon has been better anthologized by sets like "Lennon Legend" or "Collection", but this CD is still the most enjoyable to me.
Shaking the Tree: Sixteen Golden GreatsShaking the Tree: Sixteen Golden Greats by Peter Gabriel
Buy used from: $7.96
Other PG compilations have been subsequently released, but this one has a perfect sequence, and the mixes are in most cases different from their album counterparts. Essential.
Very Best Of Little RichardVery Best Of Little Richard by Little Richard
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $8.00
Most of his landmark hits, digitally remastered, in their original Specialty Records versions. This replaces "The Georgia Peach" as the ultimate Little Richard collection.
Chronicle, Vol. 1: The 20 Greatest HitsChronicle, Vol. 1: The 20 Greatest Hits by Creedence Clearwater Revival
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.95
It's hard (for any artist) to have a hits CD where all 20 tracks are strong, but it is true of this set. This collection has all the CCR a casual fan might want. I have the complete CCR discography on CD, and this is still the one title I consider their best.
Gord's GoldGord's Gold by Gordon Lightfoot
Buy new: $8.97 / Used from: $4.79
My dad was telling me a couple weeks ago about how much he enjoyed Gordon Lightfoot, so I decided to do a little research and pick up a proper introduction to his works. This compilation is a beautiful set, and this man's voice is splendid. Superb introduction!
The Best Of David Bowie 1969-1974The Best Of David Bowie 1969-1974 by David Bowie
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $3.89
Bowie is probably one of the most anthologized artists ever. Despite of this, any attempt to summarize his 45+ year career with a single CD is bound to fail. With that in mind, this collection, covering the first half of his golden 70's decade serves as the perfect introduction to his music, combining all the hits with essential album cuts and several rarities that should not be missed.
Very Best of Roy OrbisonVery Best of Roy Orbison by Roy Orbison
Buy used from: $21.94
Orbison has also been anthologized too many times. This collection, covering mainly his years under Virgin records, is remarkable because it is one of the few including his 60's classic compositions together with his 80's comeback hits. However, keep in mind most of the 60's songs are either new remakes or live versions. Still, Roy's voice is top notch everywhere.
Rainy Day, Dream AwayRainy Day, Dream Away by Jimi Hendrix
Buy used from: $0.45
This Starbucks set was my first formal introduction to Hendrix. For somebody who was totally unacquainted with his body of work, it worked wonderfully. A great selection, superbly sequenced, that did not fear leaving out some classics. It does not attempt to be definitive, and in that respect, it works great!
Best Of Emerson Lake And Palmer (Rhino)Best Of Emerson Lake And Palmer (Rhino) by Emerson Lake & Palmer
Buy used from: $4.30
There have been zillions of different "Greatest Hits" compilations from ELP. At least, I can recommend this one, which I find very strong. Again, the sequencing is quite nice, and every song deserves to be here.
Tom Petty - Greatest Hits [Germany Bonus Track]Tom Petty - Greatest Hits [Germany Bonus Track] by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $5.87
Here, the new reissue is worse than the original. When MCA re-released this chartbuster in 2008, deleted the non-album track "Something In The Air", and substituted it with Stevie Nicks' "Stop Dragging My Heart Around" (backed by TP&HB). Get this 1993 version. It's a superb distillation of Petty's greatest singles for MCA (a collection including his Warner years is sorely missed).
The Very Best of Diana KrallThe Very Best of Diana Krall by Diana Krall
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $4.99
Alright. I plead guilty. I was drawn to buy music from this pretty lady because of her looks, but ultimately I remained a fan because of her immense talent. This collection summarizes some of her most significant works for Verve Records. Great stuff!
Outstanding PerformerOutstanding Performer by Roy Wood
Buy used from: $11.67
In order to find a 1CD introduction to Roy Wood, there are too many titles to choose from. This one stands above the other 1CD sets for two main reasons: 1) it has been beautifully remastered, so all tracks sound amazing, and 2) the track selection is superb. Sure, any single CD collection from Wood will have to omit important tracks, but at least this one is "all-killer, no filler."
RelicsRelics by Pink Floyd
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.14
This "early hits" compilation from Pink Floyd serves as a closing chapter to their psychedelic sixties works. It contains the exclusive "Biding My Time", plus non-LP singles, and key album tracks, all in stereo. When it was re-released in the mid-90's, it was nicely remastered (sounds great), and the artwork was beautifully revamped.
Very Best of Jethro TullVery Best of Jethro Tull by Jethro Tull
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $3.49
This one was my personal introduction to Jethro Tull. Some essential tracks are obviously omitted in order to provide comprehensiveness (it's hard to otherwise justify the presence of "Roots To Branches" and "Steel Monkey" instead of hits like "Skating Away" and "Teacher"), but it is a nice listen nevertheless. Personally compiled by Ian Anderson.
Deepest Purple: The Very Best of Deep PurpleDeepest Purple: The Very Best of Deep Purple by Deep Purple
Buy new: $7.98 / Used from: $1.90
This is my preferred intro to this band. It was an extremely long single-LP back in the day, released while the band was in hiatus after the demise of the Mk IV lineup. Therefore, it does not include any material from the "Perfect Strangers" era onward, making this less comprehensive but more enjoyable (for me) than other compilations. Sure-fire from beginning to end.
Definitive CollectionDefinitive Collection by Electric Light Orchestra
Buy used from: $8.47
Though more recent sets have better sound quality and selections by Jeff Lynne, this good old hits set has most of the crucial ELO hits from '73 to '83 (omitting material from their first 2 LPs on EMI). This album is comprehensive enough to serve as a proper intro to the band (unlike their excellent two 70's best-of collections, "Olé ELO" and "Greatest Hits"). As far as 1CD sets go, this rules.
FlowersFlowers by The Rolling Stones
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $8.75
This collection is among my favorite 3 Stones releases. It was released in the US to fill gaps with respect to the UK releases, but the amount and quality of the songs included makes this my ideal introduction to the Stones. This album puts the spotlight on the more melodic side of Jagger & Co., and includes many of their mid 60's hit singles. Essential.
The Cream of Clapton [Eco-pak]The Cream of Clapton [Eco-pak] by Eric Clapton
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $2.82
An excellent introduction to Clapton's Polydor/RSO years. When he signed up for Reprise, he completely changed his musical focus from guitar divinity to pop songcraft.
Photograph: The Very Best of Ringo StarrPhotograph: The Very Best of Ringo Starr by Ringo Starr
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $10.15
Available in both a 1CD standard edition and a limited edition with a bonus DVD, this collection is the ultimate Ringo hits career spanning compendium, with stellar sound quality and unsurpassed song selection. All his essential hits plus some key album tracks from his more recent releases, this is the best compilation Starr has released.
Classic MastersClassic Masters by Del Shannon
Buy new: $4.49 / Used from: $3.57
This all-too-brief hits set from Del Shannon (under half an hour long) has the virtues of having splendid sound quality, with a great song selection, and at the same time being extremely cheap. Probably other more comprehensive 1CD collections exist from Mr. Runaway, but it's quite hard to have this quality (song selection + sonic clarity) for this price. Every essential hit is here!
Live: 1961-2000Live: 1961-2000 by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $47.99 / Used from: $19.57
Since Dylan is one of those artists who are impossible to properly compile in less than two or three discs, I chose for this list this great selection from Sony Japan comprising live tracks throughout the years. Highly enjoyable, with many otherwise unavailable tracks (making it essential for collectors).
All The Best (UK Version)All The Best (UK Version) by Paul McCartney
Buy used from: $11.16
Although in huge need of an update, this 17 track compilation from 1987 is still the most comprehensive McCartney retrospective, covering his Wings hits, assorted collaborations, and solo hits up to that date. The UK and US versions feature different tracklists, reflecting the different hits on each territory.
20 Essential Tracks from the Boxed Set: 1965-9020 Essential Tracks from the Boxed Set: 1965-90 by The Byrds
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.18
This compilation was originally meant to serve as a sampler for the first Byrds box set, but ultimately works pretty well as a Greatest Hits collection, despite the inclusion of some lesser McGuinn/Hillman/Crosby reunion recordings from 1990. Most of the hits are here, so if you need a brief collection from which to start listening to this extraordinary band, this will help.
Complete CollectionComplete Collection by Robert Johnson
Buy used from: $3.09
While the 2CD "The Complete Recordings" by Robert Johnson is widely available, I personally prefer this other collection, mainly because I feel it works better as an album, given that it features one (and only one) version of each song Mr. Johnson recorded. Outstanding music.
Very Best Of Cat StevensVery Best Of Cat Stevens
Buy used from: $6.65
I have "Remember" (currently available only on Amazon UK) on CD, but this earlier compilation is a similarly good introduction to Cat, though long out of print. I had it on tape back in the early 90's. This tape made me a fan.
Master Strokes: 1978-1985Master Strokes: 1978-1985 by Bill Bruford
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $5.79
This retrospective collects some highlights from Bruford's solo years between 1978 and 1985, right before he founded his prog-jazz ensemble, Bill Bruford's Earthworks. A nice introduction to one of the most versatile and talented percussionists of the past 40 years.
Epic AnthologyEpic Anthology by The Hollies
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.65
Since this only covers their Epic Records years, it is not as comprehensive as other collections (missing the bulk of their "British Invasion" hits), but this flows very well, and, more importantly, doesn't include as much filler, as most of their career-spanning multi-disc sets do. Good intro, with pristine sound quality.
Zappa Picks - By Larry LaLonde of PrimusZappa Picks - By Larry LaLonde of Primus by Frank Zappa
Buy used from: $7.39
A late entry! I was looking for an intro to Zappa, and, logically, was scared at the variety and volume of his output. While "Strictly Commercial: The Best Of Frank Zappa" is the most logical 1CD introduction to his works, this other compilation is so deliciously compiled, I prefer it over the "Best Of", especially regarding the flow of the music. Awesome.
The Beatles 1The Beatles 1 by The Beatles
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $5.75
I have mixed feelings about this one. Yes, it compiles all the #1 hits from the most important recording artists of the century (IMHO), and it has reasonable sound quality (perhaps a little too loud), but if it was up to me to introduce somebody to The Beatles with 27 songs fit on one CD, it's highly likely I would choose other 27 songs than what this set offers. It is still a great introduction.
