Amazing GraceAmazing Grace
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $3.44
The title comes from John Newton’s famous hymn, but this is not the story of the slave trader who when confronted by God turned his ship around and released the slaves he held. This is the story of his friend, William Wilberforce, (Ioan Gruffudd) who, when confronted by that same God, spent years working to abolish slavery and improve the life of man and beast. See this film. Five stars.
Bleak HouseBleak House
Buy new: $21.49 / Used from: $17.55
Victorian writer Charles Dickens is not known as a romance writer but, despite the name of the novel and movie, he did a good job with this complex but ultimately happy ending story. Gillian Anderson of The X-Files plays a tragic figure in both the movie The House of Mirth, listed below, and this miniseries.
The BuccaneersThe Buccaneers
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $10.68
The BBC miniseries is adapted from the last, incomplete, novel by Edith Wharton. It follows the lives of four American girls of the nouveau riche (new rich) of the late nineteenth century. Shunned by the old established families of the time, the girls travel to England for a “London season.” All of the girls are soon married into the British aristocracy. But, be warned, this is not a romance.
ClarissaClarissa
Buy new: $37.49 / Used from: $12.58
Based on the 1748, Georgian period, epistolary novel by Samuel Richardson, this is the original tale of fatal attraction and dangerous liaisons. Dark and foreboding, most of the characters are self absorbed or just plain evil. Clarissa attempts to be virtuous by she is naive and ultimately ill-used by all around her. This is not a romance, it is a tragedy in every sense of the word.
Daisy MillerDaisy Miller
Buy used from: $3.99
The movie is an adaptation of Henry James’ 1878 novella of the same name. James had a great idea for his novella. The plot sets Daisy Miller, an unconventional young American against the norms of Victorian era society. Is she an innocent girl or a woman on the road to social ruin and scandal—or both? The movie was filmed in the beautiful locations James mentions in the story. Four Stars.
Daniel DerondaDaniel Deronda
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.27
Based on the Victorian novel by George Eliot, it has several surprising twists and turns. The story features Jewish characters in a favorable light—uncommon for the period.
The Duchess of Duke Street - Series 1The Duchess of Duke Street - Series 1
Buy new: $79.99 / Used from: $48.69
Seen in America on Masterpiece Theater, this 1976 British miniseries from the creators of Upstairs, Downstairs is superb. Loosely based on the true story of Rosa Lewis the miniseries tells the story of Louisa Trotter a poor girl who rises from maid to consort for a prince and owner of Bentinck, one of the finest hotels in London. Five stars.
The Duchess of Duke Street - Series 2The Duchess of Duke Street - Series 2
Buy new: $71.99 / Used from: $40.96
A bit darker than series one but still a superb Edwardian era story. Four stars
Emma (A&E, 1997)Emma (A&E, 1997)
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $5.57
Both versions of Emma take liberties with Jane Austen’s 1815 novel and both do not have sufficient time to fully develop the plot however, this BBC movie has more of the feel of the Regency period.
EmmaEmma
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.66
As mentioned above, both versions take liberties with the novel. This movie, with only 121 minutes, has to hurry parts but Emma (Gwyneth Paltrow) and Mr. Knightly have excellent on screen chemistry.
Gone with the Wind (Two-Disc Edition)Gone with the Wind (Two-Disc Edition)
Buy used from: $13.00
One of the few movies on this list adapted from a work by an American writer. Margaret Mitchell wrote the novel in 1936 and won a Pulitzer Prize for it the next year. Although not written during the period, the book and the movie adapted from it, remain enduringly popular.
Horatio Hornblower Collector's EditionHoratio Hornblower Collector's Edition
Buy used from: $38.50
Based on the novels by C. S. Forester, 1899-1966, this is one of the best period naval stories I have ever watched. In the series we follow the life of Horatio Hornblower from a young, seasick, midshipman to an accomplished naval captain and war veteran.
The House of MirthThe House of Mirth
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $4.96
Based on the 1905 novel by Edith Wharton, it follows socialite Lily Bart (Gillian Anderson of The X-Files) as she attempts to find a husband and sabotages the attempts with gambling debts and troublesome financial obligations to a married man, aptly played by Dan Aykroyd. If you enjoy period movies this is one worth watching but be warned it was written as social commentary, not as a romance.
The InheritanceThe Inheritance
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $8.21
The movie is based on the novel by American writer Louisa May Alcott. I have not read the novel but the story is good and can be enjoyed on its own.
Jane Eyre (Masterpiece Theatre, 2006)Jane Eyre (Masterpiece Theatre, 2006)
Buy new: $23.49 / Used from: $20.78
Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre has been brought to stage and screen many times but this is the best adaptation to date. The 240-minute miniseries brings the novel to television in a faithful manner. This 2007 Masterpiece Theatre version will become the definitive screen adaptation of the novel for years to come. It does have a happy ending. Five stars!
Jane Eyre (1971)Jane Eyre (1971)
Buy used from: $5.99
Charlotte Bronte’s 1847 novel, Jane Eyre, is one of the most famous novels of Victorian literature. However, this 1971 adaptation starring George C. Scoot and Susannah York is not the best. Largely a sad story. Three stars.
Little Women (Collector's Series)Little Women (Collector's Series)
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $3.23
The 1868 novel by American writer Louisa May Alcott is a semiautobiographical rendering of her childhood in Concord, Massachusetts. This movie takes liberties with the text but it remains a good story that can be enjoyed on its own.
Lorna DooneLorna Doone
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $7.49
Filmed on location in both England and Wales, this 150 minute collaboration between the BBC and A&E has resulted in an excellent adaptation of the novel by Richard Doddridge Blackmore. Blackmore’s novel was first published in 1869 and, except for one brief period about a year later, has never been out of print.
The Love LetterThe Love Letter
Buy used from: $55.00
This fascinating Hallmark Hall of Fame television film was adapted from a short story by Jack Finney. It is not strictly a period movie, more like a love story that spans time such as The Lake House. Unfortunately, it is no longer available new. I borrowed it from my local library and you can still buy it used on Amazon.com. I recommend it.
Mansfield Park (1999)Mansfield Park (1999)
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $4.86
The novel by Jane Austen was published in 1814. This 1999 adaptation is a good, if somewhat loose, version of the story.
Mansfield Park (BBC, 1986)Mansfield Park (BBC, 1986)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $2.02
This 1983 BBC miniseries is 261 minutes in length. While the budget was less than the 1999 version, and the actors were not as accomplished, this production is very close to the Austen story. Much of the dialogue is verbatim from the novel. Well worth watching. Four Stars.
Master and Commander - The Far Side of the World (Widescreen Edition)Master and Commander - The Far Side of the World (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $0.09
This excellent movie is adapted from the first book, released in 1970, and the tenth, in a twenty novel series by author Patrick O’Brian. He was working on a new novel in the series when he died in 2000. The movie, released in 2003 is very accurate to the time and generally follows the two novels upon which it is based. I think he would have been pleased.
The Mayor of CasterbridgeThe Mayor of Casterbridge
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $1.86
Starts sad and spirals down. I am not a fan of Greek tragedies and I believe that is what Thomas Hardy was trying to write. Everyone you come to care about in the book and film goes through terrible pain. This is a well-written story with several characters we come to care about, plenty of plot twists, emotion and ample pain and torment. Do not expect a romance--this is a tragedy.
The Mill on the FlossThe Mill on the Floss
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $2.97
Unrequited love and a family bent on self-destruction are the heart of this story. The movie is based on a novel by Marian Evans, better known as George Elliot. The story is of the lives of Tom and Maggie Tulliver, brother and sister, growing up at a mill along the river Floss around the 1820’s. This is a good story, but I consider several of the authors other novels to be superior to this story.
The MoonstoneThe Moonstone
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $10.00
Based on the 1868 novel by Victorian writer Wilkie Collins, this is a combination Victorian detective and romance story.
North & SouthNorth & South
Buy new: $23.99 / Used from: $21.94
An excellent four-hour BBC mini-series adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's 1854 novel. Margaret Hale is forced to move with her parents from an idyllic country parsonage to the gritty industrial town of Milton after her father leaves the ministry. In Milton she meets the mill owner Mr. Thornton. This is a romance in the spirit of Pride & Prejudice. Also see Wives & Daughters. Five Stars for both!
Northanger Abbey (BBC, 1986)Northanger Abbey (BBC, 1986)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $5.89
The least faithful adaptation of a Jane Austen novel. The novel was published posthumously in 1817. Both the novel & movie refer to popular romance novels of the period.
PersuasionPersuasion
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $5.90
Because of the rather complex family relationships in this movie, you need to watch it a few times or read Jane Austen’s novel. Both are good choices. Published posthumously in 1817.
Poldark 1 (6 VHS Boxed Set) [VHS]Poldark 1 (6 VHS Boxed Set) [VHS]
Buy used from: $49.95
Although not written during the period, this 1977 adaptation of the first four novels by Winston Graham has the feel of Victorian era drama. Clearly made for television, the production budget was adequate but not lavish. It remains a compelling story. Unfortunately, it is no longer available new but you can still buy it used on Amazon.com or borrow it from the library.
Pride and Prejudice - The Special Edition (A&E, 1996)Pride and Prejudice - The Special Edition (A&E, 1996)
Buy new: $19.49 / Used from: $16.48
Made in 1996, this superb 300-minute long A&E/BBC mini-series is an adaptation of Jane Austen's 1813 novel. Although the opening scene is not in the book, whole pages of text are presented verbatim. Five Stars!
Pride & PrejudicePride & Prejudice
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $5.24
This 2005 adaptation from Universal Studios is a very good adaptation of the novel, but Jane Austen writes a leisurely-paced novel that cannot be adequately presented in 129 minutes. Four stars.
Pride and Prejudice (BBC, 1980)Pride and Prejudice (BBC, 1980)
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.80
This is a 1985 BBC mini-series. As with the 1996 version, the opening scene is radically altered from Austen’s novel, but again whole pages of text are presented verbatim. Regrettably, the acting is like that of a stage production with long lines of dialogue. They often stood tall and stiff with only slight interaction with the set and sadly limited facial expression or feeling. Three stars.
Sense & Sensibility (Special Edition)Sense & Sensibility (Special Edition)
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $3.74
A good adaptation of the Jane Austen novel published in 1811. Five stars.
Sense & Sensibility (with Miss Austen Regrets) (BBC TV 2008)Sense & Sensibility (with Miss Austen Regrets) (BBC TV 2008)
Buy new: $18.99 / Used from: $16.00
The BBC adaptation of the Jane Austen classic is equal to the excellent 1995 Hollywood version. Settings in this version are particularly nice. I recommend seeing them both.
Tristan and Isolde (Widescreen Edition)Tristan and Isolde (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $1.72
The movie is based on a Celtic tale of impossible love. The original story is set during the Dark Ages about a hundred years after the fall of Rome. Tristan is a brooding, almost dark, character who willingly betrays his benefactor because of his love for Isolde. She romps in the forest with Tristan even though the king loves her and treats her with kindness and respect. Four stars.
Under the Greenwood TreeUnder the Greenwood Tree
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $10.13
The Victorian writer Thomas Hardy considered this novel to be one of his lesser works. It is a fairly simple story but, nonetheless, a fine period romance.
Washington SquareWashington Square
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $3.69
The movie largely follows the 1881 novel by Henry James. The story is set in the New York neighborhood where he was born. Albert Finney plays Dr. Austin Sloper. His wife died giving birth to their child, Catherine, played by Jennifer Leigh. When his daughter is courted by a dashing but poor suitor the doctor forbids the relationship. Both are stubborn, but who is right? Powerful and tragic.
Wives and DaughtersWives and Daughters
Buy new: $36.99 / Used from: $28.91
An excellent 375-minute long BBC mini-series adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's 1865 novel. She was writing this novel in 1865 when she died unexpectedly at the age of 55. The last few pages of the novel were completed from her notes. This is an excellent adaptation. A Victorian romance in the spirit of Jane Austen. Also see North & South. Five Stars for both!
The Woman in WhiteThe Woman in White
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $11.75
Another novel by Victorian writer Wilkie Collins, he considered this his greatest achievement. It is darker than The Moonstone but is an excellent story.
