CabaretCabaret
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $2.98
Cabaret is at the top of the list for a reason. There has never been a more successful adaptation of a Broadway musical. Adaptation is the key word: this was a complete rethinking of the stage show. It proved that musicals could effectively tackle even the most serious of topics. Sizzling hot dance routines. Pitch-perfect performances by all. Winner of eight well deserved Academy Awards.

A fine film and historically important since it reinvigorated the long dormant film musical form. Adult, biting film-making.
A Star Is BornA Star Is Born
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $4.36
The best of the four versions of this story committed to film. Long, but not a wasted frame. Very moving.

A great comedy, a great romance, a great musical, a great unhappy ending.

The unfilmable stage show reimagined as a perfect film musical.
New York, New York (Special Edition)New York, New York (Special Edition)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $0.99
I know a lot of people have problems with this film, but it works for me. Maybe because I'm from New York. Serious drama with strong musical score. Real chemistry between the leads. Dig "And the World Goes Round" performed in a single take. And that title song soars.

Gorgeous period piece. The last great original film musical.
Meet Me In St. Louis (Two-Disc Special Edition)Meet Me In St. Louis (Two-Disc Special Edition)

Bigger isn't always better. A sweet, intimate film.
Singin' in the Rain (Two-Disc Special Edition)Singin' in the Rain (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $8.90
The single most famous musical number ever committed to film. Jean Hagen is a hoot. And Cyd Charisse, tiny part, but....wow!
West Side Story (Special Edition Collector's Set)West Side Story (Special Edition Collector's Set)
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $7.99
An opening sequence second only to the same director's SOUND OF MUSIC. I saw this on television more times than I can count while growing up, and it would probably not have made this list if I had never seen the DVD. The DVD is revelatory...widescreen is the way to go, and the colors are amazing.
Guys & Dolls (Widescreen Deluxe Edition)Guys & Dolls (Widescreen Deluxe Edition)

Marlon Brando and Jean Simmons singing and dancing? It shouldn't work, but it does, and marvelously well at that. While some people feel the obviously artificial sets detract, I think they perfectly complement the highly stylized dialogue and musical idiom.
The Commitments (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)The Commitments (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $20.49 / Used from: $11.50
Pulling a bunch of songs from disparate sources and melding them into a cohesive whole...this is how it's done.

Watch this side by side with the earlier John Huston version for a lession on the do's and don'ts of musical film-making.

Well of course. Timeless magic.
The King and I (50th Anniversary Edition)The King and I (50th Anniversary Edition)
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $12.99
The best of Rodgers and Hammerstein on film. Those seconds when the music swells just before Anna and the King break into their polka in "Shall We Dance"...possibly the single most romantic moment on film. And all he does is put his hand around her waist!
