The Godfather - The Coppola Restoration Giftset (The Godfather / The Godfather Part II / The Godfather Part III) [Blu-ray]The Godfather - The Coppola Restoration Giftset (The Godfather / The Godfather Part II / The Godfather Part III) [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $49.99 / Used from: $38.12
Fully restored under Francis Ford Coppola's supervision; This 4-disc set includes all three films in 1080p in three separate discs with commentary by Coppola on all three, while the fourth will include new extras also in HD. THE release of the year, without a doubt.
Dirty Harry (Blu-ray Book) [Blu-ray]Dirty Harry (Blu-ray Book) [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $13.27
Warner is doing a really god job with remastering old movies--they have made 4k a standard for important classic films; Dirty Harry has clearly benefited with this: it look great for a film from 1971.
Bonnie and Clyde (Blu-ray Book) [Blu-ray]Bonnie and Clyde (Blu-ray Book) [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $23.49 / Used from: $14.79
Remastered version; clean & dirt-free. Compare this with the upscaled DVD version and notice the difference-- compression issues are no longer a problem here with the VC-1 codec on this Blu-ray. Nice work.
Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas (Director's Cut) [Blu-ray]Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas (Director's Cut) [Blu-ray]
Buy used from: $36.81
This is the German import, as there hasn't been an official US release as of writing. But, this cult classic from Terry Gilliam looks absolutely superb on Blu-ray. Normally, the 'foreign' releases of US films look sub-par on BD, but this one has perfect video and audio (a 5.1 DTS-HD Track is included). Terry Gilliam's adaption of Hunter S. Thompson's drug-induced classic has never looked better.
Predator [Blu-ray]Predator [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $8.49
Predator was always a grainy film, something that can be attributed to the film stock used at the time. This has a heavily inconsistent picture--sharp scenes and suddenly grainy, murky scenes. At $27.95, the price is definitely too high. It's better than the recent DVD though. Go to this site to see the difference: http://web12.dvd2web.de/hd_pred/hd_pred.htm
Patton [Blu-ray]Patton [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $10.99
Nice sharp PQ, but currently being chastised by videophiles for excessive use of DNR. It may not matter much in a smaller screen, but the bigger the screen the chances are high that you will notice that all the high-frequency details are missing because of the excessive use of DNR. Grain-haters will love this though.
Commando [Blu-ray]Commando [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $8.20
Not exactly a top-notch transfer, grain is present throughout. Colors and contrast are not that impressive. Could've done more work on this one, I feel. See the difference between the DVD & Blu-ray: http://web12.dvd2web.de/hd_commando/hd_commando.htm
First Blood [Blu-ray]First Blood [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $7.75
The overall look of this film is very drab, as was intended. So you can't compare it to the polished, glossy action films of today. To differences between the standard DVD and this HD release can be noticed specially in the darker scenes: the Blu-ray has more shadow detail and depth than the DVD.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid [Blu-ray]Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $18.49 / Used from: $19.89
In this release, the most noticeable improvement is in color depth over the DVD version. But some of parts of this movie was shot in a sepia tone, which doesn't look good in 1080p as it becomes somewhat grainy. Yet a marked improvement in color and clarity. See the difference between the DVD & Blu-ray: http://web12.dvd2web.de/hd_butch/hd_butch.htm
The Searchers [Blu-ray]The Searchers [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $7.74
Lookin good. If given the right treatment this how an older film would look like. Restored meticulously with concern and care, and the result is this dazzling Blu-ray disc.
The Wild Bunch [Blu-ray]The Wild Bunch [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $9.16
Sam Peckinpah's violent opus gets the HD treatment. Nice sharp picture throughout, colors are bold and vivid. Grain is very minimal for a film from 1969, hardly a hindrance. The panoramic cinematography of deserts and wild western landscapes stand out well in detail, and the sound is good too.
2001: A Space Odyssey [Blu-ray]2001: A Space Odyssey [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $8.50
Another example of a fabulous looking older title. Certainly a 5/5 for picture quality for a movie from the 60's. Perfect demo material if you want to show of the old stuff to old timers!
Blade Runner (Five-Disc Complete Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray]Blade Runner (Five-Disc Complete Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $16.59
A soaring hit already on all formats--DVD, Blu-ray, HD DVD. This was one of my first five BD's, and I'm glad I bought it. All five existing versions are available in this set--including the rare workprint. But 'The Final Cut' is the best version of them all--scanned at 4k it is noticeable when compared to the older versions.
Full Metal Jacket (Deluxe Edition) [Blu-ray]Full Metal Jacket (Deluxe Edition) [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $9.00
This is the remastered 'Deluxe Edition' of Stanley Kubricks's 'Full Metal Jacket'. The earlier version on blu-ray was criticized harshly, and this version was probably released to make amends. It's a good effort, the picture is very 'film-like' in its granular structure, there's more detail and sharpness; colors are drab, though not a fault of the transfer.
A Clockwork Orange [Blu-ray]A Clockwork Orange [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $8.45
A substantial upgrade from the DVD versions that came before, but not without it's flaws: there's some banding and macroblocking--not very distracting, as the overall image is solid. Colors are drab (as intended) this being a Kubrick film; sharpness is relatively good, blacks are solid. The film is presented in it's original theatrical ratio of 1.66:1, so it'll be pillar-boxed on your HDTV.
The Shining [Blu-ray]The Shining [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $11.31
A lot of 'cleaning up' done on this film, and in a good way. DNR may have come into play, and I know some of you are not fond of this type of noise reduction. But it still looks darn better than earlier DVD versions, even the 2001 DVD from Warner.
Robocop [Blu-ray]Robocop [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $8.45
The first release from Sony of this classic film was bad (it's now discontinued). Then came this one, and it's a hit and miss. Sure, it's the best it has ever looked on home video but I--and many others--feel a little more effort could've been put into this. See the difference between the DVD & Blu-ray here: http://web12.dvd2web.de/hd_robocop/hd_robocop.htm
The Terminator [Blu-ray]The Terminator [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $8.66
Again, another one where you have to decide whether you are going for the best possible presentation of this James Cameron film on this edition, or you are currently satisfied with your DVD version. Some noise reduction has been done, as the surplus of grain that appeared on the DVD are no longer here. The result is a cleaner image than the DVD.
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (Skynet Edition) [Blu-ray]Terminator 2: Judgment Day (Skynet Edition) [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $12.75
Don't buy the cheap T2 Blu-ray! This is the version to get! This Blu-ray disc will feature MULTIPLE versions of the film in 1080p AVC accompanied by a 6.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. Plus, a bevy of extras that include two commentaries and D-Box motion control.
Die Hard [Blu-ray]Die Hard [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $9.95
Well, this movie does look twenty years old. And it's irrational to expect it to look like newer Blu-ray titles. Plus, the movie was always somewhat on the soft side--largely due to cinematographer Jan DeBont's intent. An okay transfer, I guess. See the difference at: http://web12.dvd2web.de/hd_diehard/hd_diehard.htm
Enter the Dragon [Blu-ray]Enter the Dragon [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.64
This looks really great for a film from the 70's. Good colors, strong detail and sharpness.
Bullitt [Blu-ray]Bullitt [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $6.99
Minted from the same master used for the 2-disc remastered special edition DVD in 2005, the presentation is good. Balanced contrast, and improved detail and sharpness specially in bright scenes. Also it is presented in 1.85:1 widescreen, not 2.40:1 as mislabeled in the back packaging.
Deliverance [Blu-ray]Deliverance [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $12.12
Certainly not a bad transfer, but not exactly reference quality either. The colors have been purposely desaturated, and also intentionally shot in a soft style(as was the intention of director John Boorman and DP Vilmos Zsigmond). Probably this is the best this movie is ever gonna look.
GoodFellas [Blu-ray]GoodFellas [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $8.48
Martin Scorcese's seminal gangster film is a worthy upgrade from the DVD versions released earlier. Depth and clarity is visible, specially in faces and clothing. Color is robust, but this release only includes a 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack.
Casino [Blu-ray]Casino [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $11.98
Another title that was previously only available in HD DVD. Martin Scorsese's 'Casino' can be purchased individually, or as a 'Gangster Gift Set' which also includes 'American Gangster' & 'Eastern Promises'.
Donnie Brasco (Extended Cut) [Blu-ray]Donnie Brasco (Extended Cut) [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $9.47
Really great PQ--5/5 in my book. The New York streets are full of detail and depth, and the color really stands out in scenes set in Florida; a crisp, sharp picture with a nice uncompressed PCM 5.1 soundtrack. Plus, it's the extended cut with over 20min of extra footage!
Dog Day Afternoon [Blu-ray]Dog Day Afternoon [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $10.43
Sidney Lumet's 'Dog Day Afternoon' staring Al Pacino in an Oscar nominated performance. Nice detail and tight black levels, but some edge enhancement has been applied. Nothing too distracting; overall a very good representation of the gritty classic 70's heist.
The Untouchables (Special Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray]The Untouchables (Special Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $10.06
Even the DVD of this lavish Brian De Palma film looked great, so no doubt that it'll look even better on Blu-ray. The movie's memorable set-pieces like the Canadian border siege look great as well as the inerior design of Capone's grandiose hotel-suite. And there's the great soundtrack from Ennio Morricone which recieves a Dolby Digital 5.1 EX and DTS-ES 6.1 treatment.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (Blu-ray Book) [Blu-ray]One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (Blu-ray Book) [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $23.99 / Used from: $17.22
The Milos Forman film starring Jack Nicholson, released as a Warner Digi-Book edition. The transfer is a little soft, probably the way the movie was shot--it's not exactly demo material; as you know the movie takes place mostly in a hospital and its clinical surrounding isn't exactly show-off material. But a decent transfer nonetheless.
Unforgiven [Blu-ray]Unforgiven [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $9.99
Clint Eastwood's Oscar winning western looks astonishing--there's depth and detail everywhere: branches, leaves, bushes and rock crevices are detailed to the max. color saturation is great, never appearing washed out at any time. Wonderful transfer, fully complements the great cinematography of this Oscar winner from 1992.
Bram Stoker's Dracula [Blu-ray]Bram Stoker's Dracula [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $8.49
Many have noticed drastic differences in color timing between this release and earlier DVD releases of Dracula. Another complaint is that the transfer is too dark, which appears true comparing pictures from other DVD releases of this film to the Blu-ray. The image is soft & flat throughout (mainly the way the movie was shot), colors muted--as was the director's wish here. Dracula Redux, anyone?
The Last Emperor [Blu-ray]The Last Emperor [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $22.99
It's good to know that Criterion has got into Blu-ray. This Oscar winner from 1987 is released with a bulk of extras, a restored HD digital transfer and DTS-HD Master Audio. Colors are well saturated, with no substantial digital artifacts to be seen, and presented in an aspect ratio of 2.00:1 as intended by Cinematographer Vittorio Storato
The Seventh Seal (Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]The Seventh Seal (Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $19.99
Ingmar Bergman's much heralded classic, 'The Seventh Seal'; with uncompressed monaural soundtrack, presented in its OAR of 1.37:1 with a wealth of extras. A Criterion release.
Last Year at Marienbad (Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]Last Year at Marienbad (Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $14.99
Another Criterion release. Alain Resnais's influential, surreal film from 1961. Presented in its OAR of 2.35:1 with uncompressed monaural soundtrack, plus extras.
In the Realm of the Senses [Blu-ray] - Criterion CollectionIn the Realm of the Senses [Blu-ray] - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $28.99
Nagisa Oshima's notorious film is still censored in its own country. Criterion has presented it uncut in its OAR of 1.66:1, with an uncompressed monaural soundtrack + extras.
How the West Was Won (Blu-ray Book) [Blu-ray]How the West Was Won (Blu-ray Book) [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $23.49 / Used from: $18.56
Now this is a unique release, mainly due to the fact that this is a Cinerama film. So in an effort to simulate the curved screen effect of Cinerama this Blu-ray will feature a 'Smilebox' version of the film. Read more here: http://www.cineramaadventure.com/smilebox.htm
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre [Blu-ray]The Texas Chain Saw Massacre [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $13.74
The original cult classic from Tobe Hooper. This was shot on 16mm, so it's bound to be grainy. I doubt this has ever looked this good on home video before; if you have a big screen LCD or plasma, buy it--it'll look much more solid than the DVD. But if your screen is small, there won't be any difference.
JFK (Blu-ray Book) [Blu-ray]JFK (Blu-ray Book) [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $23.49 / Used from: $17.99
The PQ is hard to judge; Stone basically uses every format- 8mm, 16mm, 35mm, Video, grainy stock footage-to visualize the fragmented narrative structure. It's only fair to comment based on 35mm segments, as much of the 8mm, 16mm stuff are grainy and at times purposely damaged to blend in with stock footage-yet with the frenetic mix of images at 24fps it's hard to notice a major difference.
L.A. Confidential [Blu-ray]L.A. Confidential [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $15.49 / Used from: $11.69
The 1997 classic starring Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce. There's an intentional soft look to the picture, possibly to accentuate that period veneer; so it isn't super sharp to begin with. Overall the image is solid, and a decent representation of the film. The sound is okay, definitely not demo-quality as it's just average.
The Thing [Blu-ray]The Thing [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $15.49 / Used from: $18.98
John Carpenter's classic from 1982. Even the cold, homogenuous color scheme of this picture looks great on this disc. As you know, the narrative is set in a harsh, Arctic surrounding--thus, the color schema is intentionally dull , but it's rendered flawlessly in this disc. An upgrade from the DVD in all aspects.
