Swann's Way: In Search of Lost Time, Vol. 1 (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition)Swann's Way: In Search of Lost Time, Vol. 1 (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition) by Marcel Proust
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $5.67
This means all of Proust. What can I say? The best way to read Proust is to see your own life through his eyes, and it is quite the trip. You relive and relieve your own memories while facing his. The volumes from Penguin are aptly translated.
The Summer Book (New York Review Books Classics)The Summer Book (New York Review Books Classics) by Tove Jansson
Buy new: $11.20 / Used from: $3.10
A book to distill the essence of summer, the awakening of the heroic ages for childhood and the decline of the sun for the elderly. A very wise and sweet book that is never sacchirine, Jansson brings the simplicity of her children's writing to a delightfully mature audience.
Stoner (New York Review Books Classics)Stoner (New York Review Books Classics) by John Williams
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $5.98
A thoroughly captivating book, filled with moments of near silenced breathing on my part. A convincing portrait of a dedicatedly good human being. Williams dramatizes the stuff of everyday life to perfection.
King Lear (The Pelican Shakespeare)King Lear (The Pelican Shakespeare) by William Shakespeare
Buy new: $7.00 / Used from: $0.94
As Shakespeare's most moving play, my advice to the first time reader is to let it affect you. Don't let your first read be in a classroom - if read for yourself, this reveals your whole belief system on family.
Speak, Memory (Everyman's Library (Cloth))Speak, Memory (Everyman's Library (Cloth)) by Vladimir Nabokov
Buy new: $13.60 / Used from: $8.60
My favorite autobiography, Nabokov presents himself as a man who doesn't "believe in time." The fluidity of his rememberings is an excellent spark for bringing out your own past.
Pale Fire (Everyman's Library (Cloth))Pale Fire (Everyman's Library (Cloth)) by Vladimir Nabokov
Buy new: $14.96 / Used from: $9.24
The most abstract of Nabokov's works, this is the novel I would suggest you go read right now - partly because I cannot describe it in this space and because it is an astounding question with multiple answers.
Nabokov: Novels, 1969-1974 (Library of America)Nabokov: Novels, 1969-1974 (Library of America) by Vladimir Nabokov
Buy new: $26.40 / Used from: $13.92
In this volume are Ada, Transparent Things, and Look at the Harlequins! Ada is a wondrous novel with even more hidden secrets than Pale Fire. It chronicles an incestous romance with eroticism while still maintaining the feeling of a fairy tale. It also offers a very original theory of time.
Walden: 150th Anniversary Illustrated Edition of the American ClassicWalden: 150th Anniversary Illustrated Edition of the American Classic by Henry David Thoreau
Buy new: $23.10 / Used from: $12.47
This made me love nature, and its directness is nothing short of a call to life. Scot Miller's photographs are a great reason to get this edition. In Thoreau’s own words, “To be awake is to be alive. I have never yet met a man who was quite awake. How could I have looked him in the face?”
I to Myself: An Annotated Selection from the Journal of Henry D. ThoreauI to Myself: An Annotated Selection from the Journal of Henry D. Thoreau by Henry D. Thoreau
Buy new: $25.55 / Used from: $8.54
What I feel to be Thoreau's most varied work, his journals are filled with surprises seen and unseen. Find out how Henry may have been as a blogger and get journal samples at: http://blogthoreau.blogspot.com/
Early Short Stories, 1883-1888 (Modern Library)Early Short Stories, 1883-1888 (Modern Library) by Anton Chekhov
Buy used from: $22.75
Garnett got Chekhov right, and these stories are amazing. Though they are early, mostly humorous sketches they bring out the detail of Chekhov that most commentators overlook: he is extremely funny. Be sure to read the other two Modern Library editions as well.
Anna Karenina (Oprah's Book Club)Anna Karenina (Oprah's Book Club) by Leo Tolstoy
Buy new: $11.05 / Used from: $0.92
A very realistic portrayal of Russian life in the 1870s, this offers world literature's best descriptions of adultery, birth, spiritual awakening, and society life almost reaching Proust's level.
Edna St. Vincent Millay: Selected Poems (American Poets Project)Edna St. Vincent Millay: Selected Poems (American Poets Project) by Edna St. Vincent Millay
Buy new: $15.60 / Used from: $3.62
The Greatest female American poet after Emily Dickinson: "I know what my heart is like Since your love died: It is like a hollow ledge Holding a little pool Left there by the tide, A little tepid pool, Drying inward from the edge." -Ebb
Peter Pan (Everyman's Library Children's Classics)Peter Pan (Everyman's Library Children's Classics) by J. M. Barrie
Buy new: $12.44 / Used from: $0.17
My favorite childhood reality, and by far one of the most readable children's tales for adults. You're never too old for pirates and mermaids, and this time piece will remind you of that with its steady ticking - full of life still.
The House at Pooh Corner (Pooh Original Edition)The House at Pooh Corner (Pooh Original Edition) by A. A. Milne
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01
A highly charged childhood tale that I couldn't wait for children of my own in order to read it again. Great fun for adults as well, as most canonic children's literature is, and every day deserves a little smackerel of something from this book.
Mozart - Le nozze di Figaro / Gens · Ciofi · Kirchschlager · Regazzo · Keenlyside · McLaughlin · van Rensburg · Abete · Rial · Concerto Köln · René JacobsMozart - Le nozze di Figaro / Gens · Ciofi · Kirchschlager · Regazzo · Keenlyside · McLaughlin · van Rensburg · Abete · Rial · Concerto Köln · René Jacobs by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Buy new: $55.98 / Used from: $24.30
The perfect recording? Filled with charm, grace, and accessibility, Mozart's music is nonetheless profound and lasting.
Beethoven: The Late String QuartetsBeethoven: The Late String Quartets by Ludwig van Beethoven
Buy new: $45.99 / Used from: $24.63
Great art has the ability to hurt us. Of course, that merits its greatness, but it wouldn't be art if it didn't put us back together again with a renewed sense of self. Follow this link and listen for yourself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9gdlRyaeGM
Beethoven: Die Späten KlaviersonatenBeethoven: Die Späten Klaviersonaten
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $16.99
If Mozart's piano concertos are the individual within society, Beethoven's spectacular series of piano sonatas are the individual facing himself. The late ones are especially spiritual and ecstatic.
Bach: Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 (The Historic 1955 Debut Recording)Bach: Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 (The Historic 1955 Debut Recording)
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $2.58
An addictive disc and Glenn Gould's premiere recording, they still have the thrill of youth and age, cynicism and exhuberance, and Baroque and modern styles interwoven. His 1981 is just as magical, but from a different perspective.
The Glenn Gould Edition - Bach: The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book IIThe Glenn Gould Edition - Bach: The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book II by Johann Sebastian Bach
Buy new: $20.97 / Used from: $16.99
It is important to appreciate both books of the WTC, but I give sole emphasis to Book II as it is the one which I return to more regularly. Easily some of the most addictive listening you'll come across in your lifetime. All of Gould's Bach is worth listening to...
Consort of Musicke by William Byrd & Orlando Gibbons; Sweelinck: Fantasia in D (The Glenn Gould Edition)Consort of Musicke by William Byrd & Orlando Gibbons; Sweelinck: Fantasia in D (The Glenn Gould Edition) by Glenn Gould
Buy new: $8.98 / Used from: $4.68
...And so are many other surprising Gould discs! One of Glenn's most beautiful and wonderfully arranged albums, Gould makes this music(ke) wonderfully alive. In the hands of many others, these would be drab Renaissance museum pieces - Glenn gives us a moving hour that I often return to.
Bach: Sonatas & PartitiasBach: Sonatas & Partitias
Buy used from: $12.99
The most envigorating music to begin your day with, but also very challenging. This has the potential to change your ideas of what music is just as much as Schoenberg. Realized by Grumiaux in an eminently poetic style that gives way to pure love of the musical architecture, this is the version to get.
Christmas Album: Original MastersChristmas Album: Original Masters
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $6.20
Much of my favorite Christmas music that reaches back into some of my most cherished childhood memories - and performed in a way that meets my classical snobbishness. Ha!
My Life as a Dog - Criterion CollectionMy Life as a Dog - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $29.99 / Used from: $16.99
My favorite film, it bridges the gap between a dying mother and rustic childhood adventures in Sweden.
Murmur of the Heart - Criterion CollectionMurmur of the Heart - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $21.00
Louis Malle is my favorite director, and his three semi-autobiographical films about youth - including "Lacombe, Lucien" and "Au Revoir, Les Enfants" - are a miracle of mood. This one especially is shockingly innocent for its backbone of incest.
The Unbearable Lightness of Being (Criterion Collection Spine #55)The Unbearable Lightness of Being (Criterion Collection Spine #55)
Buy used from: $15.77
An very complete and convincing intimate epic. Using much of Janacek's chamber music, this film chronicles a womanizer and his women after the short-lived Prague Spring in 1968. Moving and elegantly paced, it has several nice surprises and touches of philosophy.
The Passion of Joan of Arc (Criterion Collection Spine #62)The Passion of Joan of Arc (Criterion Collection Spine #62)
Buy new: $27.99 / Used from: $21.99
Ultimately, this has my vote for the most beautifully shot film ever - and its from 1928. If you don't like subtitles, black and white, and silent films, then just let Falconetti's eyes do their magic.
The Gold Rush (2 Disc Special Edition)The Gold Rush (2 Disc Special Edition)
Buy used from: $28.99
Much of what is so lovable and poetic about Chaplin's films, including the sentimentality, is present here. Of all the films on this list, this is the one I wish I'd been introduced to earlier in life.
