In the Womb: Witness the Journey from Conception to Birth through Astonishing 3D ImagesIn the Womb: Witness the Journey from Conception to Birth through Astonishing 3D Images by Peter Tallack
Buy new: $16.50 / Used from: $0.01
This is an excellent introduction to your baby's development. It contains amazing photography and ultrasound images at each stage in the baby's development. And the accompanying text provides a lot of good detail about the science of pregnancy. This book would definitely make a nice baby shower gift! Dads might find the science as one way to get into the experience of pregnancy.
National Geographic - In the WombNational Geographic - In the Womb
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $6.59
This is the excellent television program that the book is based on. It aired on the National Geographic Channel in early 2006. The neat thing about this program is that you can see the movement of the child in the womb through 4-D ultrasounds (3-D + time), which is a relatively new innovation. So there's a lot more to be learned from looking at behavior in the womb and stuff like that.
What to Expect When You're Expecting, Third EditionWhat to Expect When You're Expecting, Third Edition by Heidi Murkoff
Buy used from: $0.01
The best overall guide for women trying to understand the changes in their bodies. Lots of helpful medical information. But all is presented in an accessible, unpretentious way. Not as much information as you'd expect about the developing baby, though.
Countdown to a Miracle: The Making of Me (3rd edition)Countdown to a Miracle: The Making of Me (3rd edition) by Julie B. Carr
This is a terrific pregnancy calendar. But keep in mind that, as noted in the intro, the calculation of dates is a little different.

The Truth About Babies: From A-ZThe Truth About Babies: From A-Z by Ian Sansom
Buy used from: $0.01
A playful, funny, philosophical, and unsentimental guide for men--and women--about the realities of parenthood. A relatively unknown literary gem.
My Boys Can Swim!: The Official Guy's Guide to PregnancyMy Boys Can Swim!: The Official Guy's Guide to Pregnancy by Ian Davis
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $3.77
Very silly title, but it's supposed to be funny, engaging, and informative for men. Amazon.com customers liked it. (I have not read this one.)
A Child Is BornA Child Is Born by Lennart Nilsson
Buy new: $14.96 / Used from: $6.42
This book was very influential in its day, back in the early 1970s. Updates have been done from time to time. This is a good book, which I recommend, but the photography of (Swedish) parents now seems outdated. There are also gratuitous heat-sensitive images of a couple making love, which seems totally cheesy! Maybe that sort of thing was cool in the 1970s....
LifeLife by Lennart Nilsson
Buy used from: $17.38
A beautiful new photography book--not just about developing babies. Large-format coffeetable book.
NOVA - Life's Greatest MiracleNOVA - Life's Greatest Miracle
Buy used from: $10.94
This groundbreaking film was produced in 1974 with Lennart Nilsson. This one has more colorful microscopic video than the remake, below, and is narrated by John Lithgow.
NOVA - The Miracle of LifeNOVA - The Miracle of Life
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $12.00
This is the 1996 remake of "Life's Greatest Miracle," which also uses Lennart Nilsson's photography. The National Geographic Channel's program is the most up to date with the current science. But the images in all three are stunning and moving. Of all of them, this one seems the most like a classroom teaching video.
From Conception to Birth: A Life UnfoldsFrom Conception to Birth: A Life Unfolds by Alexander Tsiaras
Buy new: $29.70 / Used from: $2.38
These photographs are stunning and amazing. But, I must say, they are not always appealing. Some of them I found downright scary. The text is also minimal, so for the price (which was high) I found other books better. But this photographer -- Tsiaras -- is definitely a pioneer. He has, for instance, another book out about the human body. This is a large format coffeetable book.
Making Babies: The Science of PregnancyMaking Babies: The Science of Pregnancy by David Bainbridge
Buy new: $18.00 / Used from: $3.59
The best general-interest book about the science of pregnancy. No photographs. Written by a noted scientist in the field. Lots of stuff in here about evolution and genetics. Some comparisons with other animals, which are interesting. The emphasis is on the first trimester, since that's where the real interesting stuff occurs. Later, the baby's just growing and getting bigger for the most part....
Child Development: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)Child Development: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions) by Richard Griffin
Oxford University Press's "very short introductions" are outstanding overviews of their topics. Good place to start if you want to figure out the general landscape before focusing on a detail of it.
The Scientist in the Crib: What Early Learning Tells Us About the MindThe Scientist in the Crib: What Early Learning Tells Us About the Mind by Alison Gopnik
Buy new: $10.79 / Used from: $4.72
This is an excellent book about more or less the first year of a child's mental development. Really makes you appreciate the small steps a child must make along the way to language and reasoning. Very accessible and readable.
