i could justify putting all of Akira Kurosawa's films on this list, but i'm going to just go with the one i found to be the most moving. it is a retelling of King Lear, but in feudal Japan, and therefore with a lot of Japanese mythology. Even though i surely missed a lot of cultural referrences, i very much enjoyed this masterpiece.

not to be confused with the US/sandra bullock crapfest. this is the original japanese version, and the vastly superior version. i absolutely love j-horror.

i'm pretty sure this counts as a foreign film. i think it was made in Australia, way before russel crowe got famous and started winning oscars. its about skinheads and the shenanigans they get into, what being racists and all. but its not one of those movies that glorifies the lifestyle at all. its very hard-hitting and intense.

i assigned myself to a mission seveal years ago (coincidently while i was still single) to see every zombie movie ever made. i suppose i'm still on that quest, though lacking the zeal i once had. anyway, this is another aussie flick, but not quite as serious as other movies on this list. a very interesting take on the zombie genere with a very amusing twist at the end.

yeah, what can i say? how about: 'where is the fish? it is a most elusive little fishy! oh fishy fishy fish!' bwa ha ha. always good for a laugh.

so its about a columbian girl forced to become a heroin mule to the united state. as you can guess, hilarity does not ensue. heartbreaking.
