One of the best films about Purdah for westerners. Learn why they practice it, what its hindrances or limitations seem to be, why they rebel against it. At the same time it is lighthearted and funny enough to not be depressing.
Black BookBlack Book
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $4.73
One of the best female driven WWII films you will ever see. Not only that, it touches on subjects and areas of the war not usually depicted in film.
My Big Fat Greek WeddingMy Big Fat Greek Wedding
Buy new: $5.98 / Used from: $0.01
It has become a classic comedy touching on issues that women from different backgrounds than the traditional Western-European may face. It's also hilarious.
The Quiet Man (Collector's Edition)The Quiet Man (Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $6.38
Based on Maurice Walsh's short story, The Quiet Man is an interesting portrait of the sort of machismo expectations of an Irish male.
Full Metal JacketFull Metal Jacket
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.10
One of Kubrick's best films, and one of the most accurate cinematic portrayals of the Vietnam war. However, what is interesting about this film is that it is really about a bunch of male soldiers sitting around talking about their feelings a lot; mainly how scared they are and how much they want to get out.
The Outsiders - The Complete Novel (Two-Disc Special Edition)The Outsiders - The Complete Novel (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $21.49 / Used from: $14.99
Susan E.(S.E) Hinton's novel brought to film. Written by a very young woman, the story depicts the lives of a small band of "greasers" from the wrong side of the tracks.
Fried Green Tomatoes (Widescreen Collector's Edition)Fried Green Tomatoes (Widescreen Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $4.40
Maybe not so much a gender movie as just a great story about women. It's funny, and it captures a social era, while juxtaposing against modern feminist issues.
Grindhouse Presents, Planet Terror - Extended and Unrated (Two-Disc Special Edition)Grindhouse Presents, Planet Terror - Extended and Unrated (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.98
I know, it sounds crazy. Rodriguez takes the classic "B-Movie" and turns it on its head. Rife with buxom, scantily clad women, the dialog is nothing but feminist empowerment.
Spy KidsSpy Kids
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $1.75
Any of the Spy Kids movies by Rodriguez are awesome. Kids would probably like them too.The older sister played by Alexa Vega is the dominant leader, with her sort of bumbling side-kick of a brother. Totally kid friendly and presents a good female role young kids to teens.
Harriet the Spy (Widescreen Collection)Harriet the Spy (Widescreen Collection)
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $2.79
Awesome movie. Good for kids as well. I never read the book. Greatest line in the film, "There as many ways to live as there are people in the world, and each deserves a closer look." Good female role for young kids.
Rocky - The Complete Saga CollectionRocky - The Complete Saga Collection
Buy new: $49.99 / Used from: $33.59
The only two that don't really fit the bill is Rocky III & IV. The first movie won Academy Awards, beating out Taxi Driver and All the Presidents Men for best picture. Rocky is a love story, pure and simple. Hands down one of the best feel-good movies ever made. Follow it up by the last film, Rocky Balboa (huge tear-jerker), and you have a really great character study of one man.
Alien Quadrilogy (Alien/ Aliens /Alien 3 /Alien Resurrection)Alien Quadrilogy (Alien/ Aliens /Alien 3 /Alien Resurrection)
Buy new: $42.99 / Used from: $18.95
Alien and Aliens created the first real female action hero. Sigourney Weaver kicks butt in both of these movies. Sci-fi horror at its best. Aliens has it all: empowerment of women, maternal instincts, forcing the act of birth upon male characters (which kills them), and more fallacies than H.R. Geiger could draw.
Bend It Like Beckham (Widescreen Edition)Bend It Like Beckham (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $1.00
Funny, witty, and touches on issues that many women from different backgrounds may face trying to blend into a community they don't easily fit into.
Brian's SongBrian's Song
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.99
This is the one movie that has traditionally been acceptable for men to cry during. Many, many references to this film.
Beaches (Special Edition)Beaches (Special Edition)
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $3.75
The stereotypical "chick-flick".
The Stepford WivesThe Stepford Wives
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $2.12
The adaptation of Ira Levin's novel, also very good. It is the ultimate feminist horror movie. Think in terms of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's The Yellow Wallpaper and this film and book make a lot more sense.
The SheikThe Sheik
Buy new: $9.95
Probably one of the most influential, and therefore important films in men's history. Rudolph Valentino raised the bar for all men in the USA. He was the first film actor targeted primarily at women.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (Widescreen Edition)The Rocky Horror Picture Show (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $4.00
A gender bending musical romp through one of the craziest movies ever made. Gotta love it. It's a classic.
Velvet GoldmineVelvet Goldmine
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.13
What happens when the traditional norms no longer apply. Two male glam rockers on their way to fame and stardom fall in love. But it's not about David Bowie and Iggy Pop wink wink ;)
Hedwig and the Angry Inch (New Line Platinum Series)Hedwig and the Angry Inch (New Line Platinum Series)
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $7.02
Gender norms are thrown out the window as everything becomes topsy turvy. Love and disappointment blossoms amongst a glam rock score. One of the best Rock Operas since Tommy.
TommyTommy
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $5.58
Written by Pete Townshend and the Who, Tommy is the story of a young boy who is molested and antagonized till he retreats into his own world of catatonia. Deals heavily with issues raising young boys in the post WWII era.
