When Grammophon Was Great

Mozart: Symphonien Nos. 35-41Mozart: Symphonien Nos. 35-41
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $9.00
The most popular of Mozart's symphonies, as rendered by the capable guidance of the BPO's most reliable conductor. These are the yardstick by which all other recordings of Mozart's familiar late symphonies must be evaluated.
Beethoven: Piano Sonatas Nos. 8, 14, 21 & 23 / Wilhem KempffBeethoven: Piano Sonatas Nos. 8, 14, 21 & 23 / Wilhem Kempff
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $0.96
While most pianists find Beethoven's sonatas to be nearly as rigorous as his concertos, Kempff's interpretations convey a casual, almost effortless familiarity with this material.
Prokofiev, Ravel: Piano Concertos, etc / Martha ArgerichProkofiev, Ravel: Piano Concertos, etc / Martha Argerich
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.24
Argerich and Abbado were both at their best in the late '60s through the '70s. As a result, this is one of the most uniquely expressive interpretations of both Prokofiev's incredible third concerto and Ravel's first. The recording of "Gaspard de la nuit" appended to this CD edition of the disc is almost unparalleled; only the Pogorelich recording is superior.
Strauss: Also Sprach Zarathustra, Don Juan / KarajanStrauss: Also Sprach Zarathustra, Don Juan / Karajan
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.96
Karajan's best recordings with any orchestra were those of late romantic music, which he took to more than any other. The conductor's veneration of Strauss's music is evident in these performances. This interpretation of "Also Sprach" possesses an otherworldly tonal sonority that has never been reproduced.
Beethoven: Violinsonaten Nos. 4 & 5 "Fruhling"Beethoven: Violinsonaten Nos. 4 & 5 "Fruhling"
Buy used from: $5.88
Among the best of this very fine series of sonatas; Kremer and Argerich's take on these early Romantic classics isn't quite the most technically superb on record, but it's undoubtedly the most fun of them all!
Beethoven: Violin Sonatas Nos. 9 & 10Beethoven: Violin Sonatas Nos. 9 & 10
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $4.24
Rostropovich, Master CellistRostropovich, Master Cellist
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $9.69
An ably compiled two-disc set that features the great Russian's tremendous recording of the Dvorák concerto with Karajan and numerous transcribed works with Dedyukhin like Rachmaninov's "Vocalise" and Schumann's "Träumerei," among others. Worth buying just to hear a great performance of Glazunov's "Chant du ménéstral."
Chopin: Twenty Four Préludes Op.28Chopin: Twenty Four Préludes Op.28
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.86
Definitely one of the more faithful interpretations of Chopin's preludes; the tonality and tempo of this performance are remarkably consistent.
Bartok: Concerto for Orchestra, Music for Strings, Percussion and CelestaBartok: Concerto for Orchestra, Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta by Karajan
Buy used from: $52.00
Reviled by Bartók purists (for good reason!) and beloved among those who thrill to smooth, fastidious interpretations of the great Hungarian's most colorful orchestral compositions, this was one of DG's more controversial releases. It's inexplicably out of print, but EMI recently released a superbly remastered reissue of these recordings (see below).

Debut Recital / Martha ArgerichDebut Recital / Martha Argerich
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $3.89
This is one of the most exciting and eclectic introductory albums of the '60s.

Scarlatti: SonatenScarlatti: Sonaten
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.16
This is one of the last DG studio releases that really grabbed me by the ear. Pogorelich's approach to Scarlatti's little gems is a typically chilly, weirdly balanced compromise between uniformity and dynamics. Pletnev's recordings of this material sound clumsy in comparison.
