Combined with the excellent low-light capabilities of the 5DMkII it is a killer combo. This is an 'L' lens, so excellent build quality and optics, and gives you everything from a moderate wide-angle to a little telephoto action. If you can only take one lens, this is will do you good service.

With the 5D Mk II you can go to ISO 1600 or even 3200 in a pinch and get good photos. Plus have money left over for a macro, or fisheye...

 | Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM Standard & Medium Telephoto Lens for Canon SLR Cameras
Buy new: $385.83 / Used from: $369.00 This is a prime lens - no zoom here - and mad fast at 1.4. Of course, at that f-stop it has a very narrow depth of focus, which is harder to control, but with a little practice you can get some very nice portraits. There are much cheaper 50mms, and also more expensive ones - this one hits the sweet spot for me between these.

Buy new: $749.00 Fisheye - I love fish, and have an aquarium. With this you can look at the world the way that fish do... Seriously though, a fisheye can be serious fun. I opted for the Sigma, rather than the Canon, because it has gotten very good reviews, and is about 30% cheaper - a consideration for a lens you are not likely to pull out that often.
