Stay PositiveStay Positive by The Hold Steady
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $7.99
I agree with Paste Magazine's assessment: They already claimed the unofficial title of Best Bar Band in America, but with this album they have become one of the best bands in America, period. If Springsteen was born 15 years later and listened to a little more punk, he'd sound like this.
Vampire WeekendVampire Weekend by Vampire Weekend
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.99
The most upbeat album I heard this year - sprightly Afro-pop from an unlikely source: a bunch of college guys from Brooklyn.
FateFate by Dr. Dog
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $3.45
Fourth and best album yet from the Philly psych-pop band. An aural treat of Beatlesque harmonies and studio wizardry.
AccelerateAccelerate by R.E.M.
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $2.01
After several years of less-then-exciting music, Stipe and company roar back with their most passionate collection since "Monster" - actually it's even better.
Viva La VidaViva La Vida by Coldplay
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $5.96
After the disappointing "X&Y", this is a real tour-de-force for the band, and quite possibly their best yet. Watch this one at Grammy time.
Real AnimalReal Animal by Alejandro Escovedo
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $3.46
One of the best rock songwriters alive, he pays tribute to his punk roots in another impressively strong effort.
The Seldom Seen KidThe Seldom Seen Kid by Elbow
Buy used from: $14.99
Fourth album from the British anthem-rockers, and maybe their best. Comparisons to Coldplay and Radiohead still abound, but here they even have a Peter Gabriel thing going on. "Grounds for Divorce" is one of the year's best songs.
A LarumA Larum by Johnny Flynn
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $3.44
Impressive debut from this Brit folk-rocker and his band, The Sussex Wit. Some of the best songwriting I've heard this side of Richard Thompson.
FlockFlock by Bell X1
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $1.59
Belated U.S. debut from one of Ireland's most popular bands. A lot of engaging, gorgeous and catchy tunes contained therein. Favorites: "Rocky Took a Lover" and "Bad Skin Day".
Worrisome HeartWorrisome Heart by Melody Gardot
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $6.99
Philly chanteuse with an inspiring backstory (started writing songs while recuperating from a near-fatal accident). Rich and jazzy material - if you like Norah Jones, you'll love her.
The Midnight Organ FightThe Midnight Organ Fight by Frightened Rabbit
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $12.17
Impassioned and slightly off-kilter vocals lead the charge in this intense set of confessional songs from the Glasgow band.
Narrow StairsNarrow Stairs by Death Cab for Cutie
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $6.97
Another solid effort from Ben Gibbard and company, with the usual deft balance of the delicate and the crunchy. "I Will Possess Your Heart" is better in the full album version.
Gift Of ScrewsGift Of Screws by Lindsey Buckingham
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $5.28
After the acoustic "Under My Skin", Lindsey is back with a more rocking set, and assures us he hasn't lost his crown as the twisted king of the pop song. Fleetwood and McVie lend a hand too, which gives some of the songs a distinctive Fleetwood Mac feel.
The '59 SoundThe '59 Sound
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.19
The best band out of New Brunswick, NJ since Looking Glass, and I don't mean that facetiously - these guys pay homage to Springsteen thematically while forging their own hearty rock sound. They're going places.
Blame It On GravityBlame It On Gravity by Old 97's
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $3.13
A bit mellower than some previous efforts, but Rhett Miller and company still put out some of the best alt-country you'll hear anywhere. "No Baby I" is a personal favorite.
Angels of DestructionAngels of Destruction by Marah
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $2.74
Maybe not quite the roots-rock classic that was their last album, "If You Didn't Laugh You'd Cry", but there's still the strong songwriting and stylistic tinkering from the Bielanko brothers that makes this band so much fun.
Life LikeLife Like by Rosebuds
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $6.67
A return to strong pop-song sensibilities after a foray into electronica for this NC band. Great vocals, and the wonderful "Nice Fox" reminds me a lot of A.C. Newman and the New Pornographers.
Volume OneVolume One by She & Him
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $10.49
Before you could say, "Not ANOTHER actress who wants to be a pop star!" this album endeared itself to nearly everyone who heard it. Zooey Deschanel does a fine job as songwriter and winsome singer, with expert support from M. Ward. She's so cute, you can even forgive her rhyming "self" and "shelf".
Oracular SpectacularOracular Spectacular by MGMT
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $6.22
Loopy, neo-psychedelic fun from this boho band. "Time to Pretend" is the breakout single, but "Electric Feel" is maybe the funkiest song I've heard since the 70's.
Fleet FoxesFleet Foxes by Fleet Foxes
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $8.95
"White Winter Hymnal" is the highlight of this album from a group with the tightest vocal harmony I've heard since Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.
MockingbirdMockingbird by Allison Moorer
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.88
Strong set of covers from the alt-country singer-songwriter who happens to be Shelby Lynne's sister and Mrs. Steve Earle.
The Stand InsThe Stand Ins by Okkervil River
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.88
Conceived as a follow-up to last year's critically acclaimed "The Stage Names", this album is just as good, with Will Sheff's passionate vocals and literate songwriting. "Lost Coastlines" is a highlight.
Volume 1: Frozen Ropes and Dying QuailsVolume 1: Frozen Ropes and Dying Quails by The Baseball Project
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.94
Scott McCaughey, Steve Wynn, Peter Buck and Linda Pitmon form a modest "supergroup" to present an original set of baseball-themed rock songs that are fun, cynical, reverent and even informative. A must for any baseball fan on your gift list.
Golden DeliciousGolden Delicious by Mike Doughty
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $3.96
Doughty is back with his trademark quirky funkiness, and while maybe not the equal of his previous effort, "Haughty Melodic", it still has a lot to satisfy, even if it does include a re-recording of one of his best songs, "27 Jennifers".
Rambling BoyRambling Boy by Charlie Haden
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.49
Jazz great Haden returns to his country roots for an all-star bluegrass celebration, with help from friends like Pat Metheny, Bela Fleck and Elvis Costello, his children, and even son-in-law Jack Black.
