Let The Right One InLet The Right One In
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.69
This is a great film regardless of genre. Except for maybe my parents, I'd recommend this film to almost anyone. After a slow start to build atmosphere and develop characters, LTROI tells one of the more unique and compelling coming of age stories I've ever seen. The finish is perfect.
The SignalThe Signal
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $0.56
Filmed by 3 different directors, The Signal bucked the 3 act format and had me engaged the entire time. I had no clue what was going to happen next. Possibly due to the different directors and tone of the film, it's not as fluid as it could have been, but I was so thrilled to see something different, this is one for my DVD collection.
Inside (Unrated)Inside (Unrated)
Buy used from: $8.55
Over the top and ridiculously fun, Inside goes for shocks whenever it can, but with that sense of style that separates French horror from the rest of the pack. Typically great acting and direction, combined with buckets of blood and top notch gore effects, make Inside another keeper for my permanent collection.
The OrphanageThe Orphanage
Buy new: $7.49 / Used from: $1.14
In theatres in '07, but released on DVD in '08, The Orphanage is a superior ghost story full of atmosphere and intrigue. This is a gorgeous film, and while the pacing and sub-titles might not be for all fans of the genre, the storytelling skill sold me completely.
The Midnight Meat TrainThe Midnight Meat Train
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $2.37
I haven't read Barker's original tale, so may have this higher than those who have. The atmosphere was cool (maybe too heavy on the blue tones), and the scares and gore prevalent. This is one subway, I would try to avoid. Vinnie Jones is tremendous in a non-speaking role, projecting menace effortlessly.
The Devil's ChairThe Devil's Chair
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $1.99
Flying well under the radar, The Devil's Chair is highly recommended to all horror fans. Who knows what is real and what's not in this possibly supernatural gripper? The lead reminds me of Jason Staitham. Good gore effects and an inventive plot.
Eden LakeEden Lake
Buy new: $14.95 / Used from: $4.17
Excellent thriller, another one on the list produced outside the US, Eden Lake succeeds by taking a traditional theme (couple terrorized in isolated wooded area) and escalating the brutality to another level. Although it made me mad at first, the ending rules. It shows that the film makers got under my skin.
Repo! The Genetic OperaRepo! The Genetic Opera
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $8.86
While not exactly scary, I really enjoyed this horror opera. The songs are good, the performances mostly top notch, and once again, I appreciate innovation. Why do folks like to see the same things over and over again with miniscule variation when you can see something a little different?
30 Days of Night30 Days of Night
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $1.64
Released on DVD very early in 2008, this is a fun little vampire flick that I like even better than the graphic novel it was based on. Sort of the opposite side of the spectrum as Let the Right One In as far as vampire films go, 30 Days of Night is a fun, relatively quick paced popcorn flick.
Dance of the DeadDance of the Dead
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $1.22
Dance of the Dead is a rollicking zombie romp that feels like a lost 80's horror nugget. I found the dialogue mostly amusing, while the action and zombies were mostly well-done. Not exactly innovative, but fun none the less.
QuarantineQuarantine
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $1.80
Since [REC] isn't out on DVD in the states yet, I'm going with Quarantine at #11. I found this fairly thrilling with mostly effective camera work. I'm still somewhat peeved that the trailers and TV ads gave away the shocking last shot.
Them (a.k.a. Ils)Them (a.k.a. Ils)
Buy new: $20.49 / Used from: $11.86
While I wasn't overly impressed with the ending reveal, pacing, and the now-expected higher level quality of French horror puts Them head and shoulders over it's American counterpart The Strangers. Anytime the film makers have me wondering what's going to happen next with a certain element of dread, I'm happy with my horror.
SplinterSplinter
Buy new: $21.49 / Used from: $4.90
If only they would have shown me more monster, Splinter would have easily cracked my top 10. The set up was great, the actors and dialogue captivating, but the edits during the action scenes were too jerky for me, and they never showed me enough of the creature.
The MistThe Mist
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $1.61
Almost forgot about this one, until the horror community reminded me. I wasn't overly impressed with the big bugs, but it's hard not to get involved with this story, and people are still discussing the controversial ending (no complaints from me). Marcia Gaye Harden turns in another excellent performance.
OtisOtis
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $1.25
I like horror that goes over the top, especially if it's done with any degree of cleverness. When the budget is low, expensive effects and action sequences take back seat to a smart script and decent actors. It's not every time that comedy and horror fit together like a Reese's peanut butter cup, but I tend to appreciate a film that doesn't take itself too seriously.
American ZombieAmerican Zombie
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $8.50
Here's another one that very few have seen. This is not your typical zombie movie by a longshot, more of a faux-documentary social commentary with zombies. I would imagine that the target audience is somewhat small for American Zombie, but I appreciated what they were trying to do and was entertained along the way.
Borderland - After Dark Horror FestBorderland - After Dark Horror Fest
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $1.32
the best of the After Dark Horror Fest DVD's of '08, Borderland is nothing original, but the pacing is very good and there are some bloody satisfying moments along the way.
TeethTeeth
Buy used from: $3.60
This is one refreshing comedy/horror. Clever, captivating, and with it's share of nasty moments thrown in, this film does indeed have teeth. Beware the Vagina Dentata!!
The CottageThe Cottage
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $2.54
Yet another over-the-top horror film that is not American made. I'm sensing a change in the horror climate. The US no longer rules the roost (and probably hasn't for a few years now). The Cottage might think it's more clever than it actually is, but the fun is definitely there even with the tendancy to groan rather than chuckle.
George A. Romero's Diary of the DeadGeorge A. Romero's Diary of the Dead
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $1.70
So it's no Night, Dawn, or Day of the Dead. Diary beats out Land in my book to grab the #4 spot in my ranking of the Romero Zombie quintilogy (?). Romero still has something to say and I can appreciate that. A better calibre of actor would have knocked this up a smidge.
Mother of TearsMother of Tears
Buy used from: $3.46
Similar in some ways to the recent work of Romero, diminishing returns has to set in at some point when you are a horror master. Argento is fairly effective with Mother of Tears and it has its share of grisly moments, however I thought it wandered at times and is a mere shadow of the absolute classic that is Suspiria.
Saw V (Unrated Director's Cut)Saw V (Unrated Director's Cut)
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $4.87
I'm not an overt Saw fan, but I respect the original and have seen all 5 now. I liked the cat & mouse game of Saw V, but could have skipped some of the Tobin Bell as mentor flashbacks. I dug the ending, and unlike Tobin Bell's Jigsaw, I really wanted this new guy to get his. This new Jigsaw is too smug, so I will continue to watch until he gets it.
The StrangersThe Strangers
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $1.89
This is no Them (see above), but not a bad effort as somewhat of a remake. Certainly better than most remakes.
Automaton TransfusionAutomaton Transfusion
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $1.73
Guilty pleasure I confess. I thought this was good, stupid, low budget Zombie fun. The to-be-continued ending was super lame, but at that point I was pretty much ready for it to be over. If AT2 ever comes out, I'll give it a view.
No Man's Land: The Rise of ReekerNo Man's Land: The Rise of Reeker
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $1.32
I think the Reeker is a pretty original villain and I thought the film looked good and was well paced. Not quite as good as the first Reeker, but I liked them both and would watch for Reeker is he pops up again in the future, hopefully with the same director/creator in charge.
