Fine screenplay and extraordinary performances in this critical drama for English-speaking Catholics.

Convincing and engaged.

Sentimental mediocrity ... reduces major mystical event of century 20 to lukewarm schmaltz.

Good in parts, particularly wartime Poland scenes. Later JP2 is earnestly portrayed by Voight, but the fact is the man was an enormously complex personality with shadows, which the film doesn't even suggest. Simply, bits of factual truth, but hardly aims at The Whole Truth.

For those who just can't get enough of the old singing priest business . . . .

Franco Zefferrili's direction captures the Catholic essence of this famous play -- the hero's struggle with his own conscience regarding moral action, egged on by encounter with his murdered king-father in Purgatory.

Just plain BAD ... so I know there must be a redeemable feature of it ... I just haven't figured it out yet (after 3 viewings).

While no overt Catholic reference, this great moral drama is the best film of a literary work by a Catholic author (Graham Greene) and on short list of great films of century 20.

One of worst films ever made, this choice wreck from Hollywood's "bible epic" days is based on New Testament apocrypha. Worthwhile as encapsulating in one movie all pitfalls of (1) presenting Jesus & apostles Hollywoodized; (2)for purposes other than teaching the faith; (3) with a lot of extra-testamental nonsense thrown in.
