Luck in the Shadows (Nightrunner, Vol. 1)Luck in the Shadows (Nightrunner, Vol. 1) by Lynn Flewelling
Buy new: $7.50 / Used from: $1.91
First book in a really great series. The relationship between these two develops slowly, which I think makes it much more believable.
Stalking Darkness (Nightrunner, Vol. 2)Stalking Darkness (Nightrunner, Vol. 2) by Lynn Flewelling
Buy new: $7.50 / Used from: $2.70
Book 2 of the Nightrunner series.
Traitor's Moon (Nightrunner, Vol. 3)Traitor's Moon (Nightrunner, Vol. 3) by Lynn Flewelling
Buy new: $7.50 / Used from: $3.03
Book 3 of the Nightrunner series. By this point, Alec and Seregil are lovers. I like that the writer never cheapens her work with explicit scenes. We know they are lovers, and that is enough.
Shadows Return (Nightrunner, Bk. 4)Shadows Return (Nightrunner, Bk. 4) by Lynn Flewelling
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.94
Book 4 of the Nightrunner series. The weakest addition so far, IMO, but by this time, you'll love the characters enough to keep reading.
MelusineMelusine by Sarah Monette
Buy used from: $3.00
Book one of the Doctrine of Labyrinths series. This book blew me away. It can be slow going at first. KEEP READING! Once Mildmay and Felix meet up, it really gets good. This is different from the others in my list in that these two are not a couple - on is gay, one is straight. But they have a really intriguing relationship.
The Virtu (Ace Fantasy Book)The Virtu (Ace Fantasy Book) by Sarah Monette
Buy used from: $32.07
Book two in the Doctrine of Labyrinths series, and to date, the best book in the series.
The MiradorThe Mirador by Sarah Monette
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.72
Book 3 in the Labyrinth series. This book suffers a little by the introduction of a third point-of-view character. But again, you'll be so intrigued by Felix and Mildmay by this point, you'll keep reading, despite the rather unwelcome addition of a woman to the mix.
CorambisCorambis by Sarah Monette
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $2.99
Conclusion to the Doctrine of Labyrinths series. Maybe not as good as the first two books, but still a good, strong finish.
WraeththuWraeththu by Storm Constantine
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $1.17
Powerful, erotic, gut-wrenching, disturbing, beautiful. I still can't decide if I love Storm Constantine, or hate her.
The Fire's Stone (Daw science fiction)The Fire's Stone (Daw science fiction) by Tanya Huff
Buy used from: $1.46
Not as good as the others on the list, but a quick and entertaining read. I suspect (of course could be wrong) that Lynn Flewelling's Nightrunner characters, and Sarah Monette's Labyrinth characters, were at least partly inspired by this book.
BansheeBanshee by Hayden Thorne
Buy new: $11.86 / Used from: $5.99
This isn't really fantasy, and isn't really romance either, but it still belongs on my list. It's a Victorian ghost story (the writing is reminiscent of authors of the period). Also, a coming of age story, as a young man learns to accept that he prefers men. This is a YA book, so a good choice if you're looking for something without sex.
Angel LandAngel Land by Victor J Banis
Buy new: $13.22 / Used from: $8.90
Wow. The sex is all fade-to-black, nothing explicit. But don't think that makes this a 'clean' book. The story is very dark, but wonderfully funny at times too.
The God EatersThe God Eaters by Jesse Hajicek
Buy new: $21.60 / Used from: $17.08
Wow! What a great book. A little more romance than previous books on the list. But also, incredibly unique and well written. I loved the old west feel - such a nice change from the standard fantasy worlds. The sex scenes between Kiernan and Ash are handled beautifully. They are deeply emotional without being overly explicit.
A Strong and Sudden ThawA Strong and Sudden Thaw by R. W. Day
Buy new: $12.82 / Used from: $9.99
There are fantasy books with romance subplots, and then there are romance books with fantasy subplots. This book is more of the latter. But, very enjoyable. Like the last book, the sex scenes are done very well - more emotional than erotic, which is nice.
The Archer's HeartThe Archer's Heart by Astrid Amara
Buy new: $16.95 / Used from: $14.00
Not without faults, but incredibly engaging. In the midst of a bitter fight for the crown, three men choose love over all else. A happy ending, and yet balanced by the dark side of making such a choice. Some of the sex scenes were overly explicit, which I felt cheapened the book overall, but of course, that's only my opinion.
Brethren: Raised By Wolves, Volume OneBrethren: Raised By Wolves, Volume One by W., A. Hoffman
Buy new: $15.56 / Used from: $9.99
This isn't technically fantasy. It doesn't really feel like historical fiction either. It's more of a pirate adventure story, with a lot of romance. Heavy on dialogue (which I like). This is the first in a series, and was a lot of fun to read.
Matelots: Raised By Wolves, Volume TwoMatelots: Raised By Wolves, Volume Two by W. A. Hoffman
Buy new: $17.12 / Used from: $7.96
There is WAY more sex in this book than in the first one. Whether this is good or bad is obviously a matter of opinion. But still, this is not smut. It is still a story about love, and about the nature of wolves and sheep among men. The first time I read the series, I didn't like this book as well. But when I read the series a second time, this one was my favorite.
Treasure: Raised By Wolves, Volume ThreeTreasure: Raised By Wolves, Volume Three by W. A. Hoffman
Buy new: $18.21 / Used from: $15.70
As good as the first. A little light on action, but not on intrigue. The sex sometimes feels gratuitous to me, but it's couched in a great story. Look forward to reading the 4th book in the series.
The Draegan LordsThe Draegan Lords by M. L. Rhodes
Buy new: $16.50 / Used from: $16.45
Pretty good fantasy book. The sex is a little over the top sometimes, IMO (sometimes the author uses ridiculous euphemisms for body parts, i.e. 'velvet-skinned monster'). Still, the fantasy storyline is very good. Cliffhanger ending, though, and the sequel has yet to be released.
Wicked GentlemenWicked Gentlemen by Ginn Hale
Buy new: $12.95 / Used from: $11.98
For the most part, I'm not a fan of urban fantasy, but this one was really a great read.
A Companion to WolvesA Companion to Wolves by Sarah Monette
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.37
I didn't love this one the way I loved the others. In fact, parts of it were a little disturbing. But I think it still deserves a place on my list.
