2001 - A Space Odyssey2001 - A Space Odyssey
Buy used from: $3.26
Still the best. Ground-breaking, thought-provoking with great music and imagery. If you also read the book, the ending will even make sense.
Blade Runner (The Director's Cut)Blade Runner (The Director's Cut)
Buy used from: $1.39
Ridley Scott's fully realized vision of the Philip K. Dick novel. A compelling tale that asks what does it mean to be human? The sets and scenes are second to none. The music by Vangelis is the icing on the cake.
Alien: 20th Anniversary Edition [Award Series]Alien: 20th Anniversary Edition [Award Series]
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $1.44
Succeeds equally as a horror movie and as a science fiction film. Gripping from start to finish. Another Ridley Scott contribution to the SF genre.
Metropolis (Restored Authorized Edition)Metropolis (Restored Authorized Edition)
Buy new: $29.95 / Used from: $15.38
From the silent era, a masterpiece by Fritz Lang. The acting is a tad dated to be sure. However, the lighting, the enormous sets (including one scene where the equivalent of a small city is flooded), the brilliant (but baffling) machines and factories - the entire visual genius of Lang, make this movie a classic. Its scale could never be duplicated today.
The Day the Earth Stood StillThe Day the Earth Stood Still
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $3.26
A science fiction story with a cautionary moral. While it has the echoes of many 1950's B science fiction movies, the acting, particularly of Patricia Neal and Micheal Rennie, pulls it up to the A level. It kept things simple and that keeps it from being dated. No other movie uses the theremin to better effect.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy used from: $3.99
The first of Spielberg's science fiction movies is still the best. Richard Dreyfuss is funny and believable as the close encountee. Spielberg has made better movies but this is his closest and best encounter with sci-fi.
Brazil - The Criterion Collection (3-Disc Boxed Set)Brazil - The Criterion Collection (3-Disc Boxed Set)
Buy new: $53.99 / Used from: $26.19
Terry Gilliam's extremely imaginative take of a strange dark comic world. The plot is convoluted, but you won't be able to take your eyes off the world he creates. And you get DeNiro in the bargain.
Things to ComeThings to Come
Buy used from: $11.95
Yes, there were science fiction movies in the 1930's besides Buck and Flash. The dialogue in this movie is stilted, but the overacting villian leavens the preachier "engineer" speeches. WW II and later events showed the movie's predictions of the future were not entirely off the mark. The film's compelling sets, artwork and quirky art-deco machines make for a fascinating future world.
The War of the Worlds (Special Collector's Edition)The War of the Worlds (Special Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $4.07
Forget the later version of TWOTW and watch this one. The Martian ships are sleek and relentless destroyers - think shark week. They generate more tension than 21st century cgi monsters ever can. Sound effects are also notable in this movie.
Fahrenheit 451Fahrenheit 451
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $5.27
No one would believe a society would exist where people don't read, rather they sit in front of room sized television screens watching worthless reality tv and dramatic treacle, right? The film (directed by F.Truffaut) is stark and empty, yet the underlying Ray Bradbury story carries through. Its fears are still relevant.
Planet of the ApesPlanet of the Apes
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $4.78
Having recently seen this, I was surprised how much better it was than I remembered. Maybe it was all the tacky sequels that tainted my memory. The original, however, is tightly directed and manages to be thought-provoking, ironic and entertaining at the same time.
Soylent GreenSoylent Green
Buy used from: $5.80
Another Charleston Heston contribution to science fiction movie classics. The movie presents a convincing dystopia that is worse than dog eat dog. Edward G. Robinson, in his last role, is an added bonus. Heston's tough guy policeman seeking meaning in a debased society foreshadowed Harrison Ford's role in Blade Runner. Heston gets to utter arguably the most famous line in a sci-fi movie.
Star Wars Trilogy (Widescreen Edition with Bonus Disc)Star Wars Trilogy (Widescreen Edition with Bonus Disc)
Buy used from: $17.98
A list like this has to have at least the first two movies, Star Wars and the Empire Strikes Back. The series is more Camelot in space than science fiction. However these are indisputably entertaining, ingenious and probably the most fun of all sf films.
The Last Starfighter (Widescreen Collector's Edition)The Last Starfighter (Widescreen Collector's Edition)
Buy used from: $5.50
By no means a masterpiece but it's an enjoyable and well made film. A great movie for kids. Plus you get Robert Preston in top form in his last role as the starfighter recruiter. You will also find out why video games are good for your kids and the galaxy.
Robinson Crusoe on Mars - Criterion CollectionRobinson Crusoe on Mars - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.49 / Used from: $24.41
Robinson Crusoe on Mars has the feel of an extended Outer Limits or Twilight Zone episode. A small number of astronauts on Mars(including Adam West) quickly dwindle to just one. Now that we have seen real pictures from Mars, the movie's barren landscapes seem prescient.
Men in Black (Deluxe Edition)Men in Black (Deluxe Edition)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $1.85
Sci-fi at its funniest. A movie where the performances are better than the special effects, and the special effects are very very good. It took me 3 times viewing to realize the bug-crazed alien was Vincent D'Onofrio. There's enough going on to watch more than once, which you can't say about many comedies.
Galaxy QuestGalaxy Quest
Buy used from: $1.99
Deftly pokes fun at Star Trek and Trekkies but at its heart it's respectful of them. Tim Allen doesn't play his Captain Taggart-Kirk part campy and that makes the movie work. The second greatest spoof of Star Trek after the Sat. Nite Live skit with John Belushi.
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - The Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition)Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - The Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition)
Buy used from: $5.12
As a life long Star Trek fan, I feel compelled to include the best of the Star Trek movies - even if none are as engaging as the TV series. Ricardo Montaban reprises his role from the original series which triggered some of the old series mojo in the rest of the cast.
Fantastic Voyage (Special Edition)Fantastic Voyage (Special Edition)
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $14.05
When I saw this movie as a kid, I thought it was the greatest film ever. An ok 1960's thriller inside a pretty good sci-fi wrapper. The film pushed the limits of special effects at the time. You get Donald Pleasance in a pleasant performance and Racquel Welch in a skin-tight scuba suit. Who could ask for more?
The Iron Giant (Special Edition)The Iron Giant (Special Edition)
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $1.94
I know there is anime that fits more squarely into the sci-fi genre than this film does, but it's such an outstanding film I had to list it. Traditional animation, luscious colors, and characters you end up really liking. The kind of movie you will show to your kids, and then watch again by yourself. (How many films on Amazon boast over 400 five star ratings?)
