Great Recordings Of The Century - Brahms: Violin Sonatas nos 1 - 3 / Perlman, AshkenazyGreat Recordings Of The Century - Brahms: Violin Sonatas nos 1 - 3 / Perlman, Ashkenazy by Itzhak Perlman
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.99
In my estimation, this is one of the finest recordings that Perlman has ever done. Very highly recommended--a classic.
Brahms: The Violin SonatasBrahms: The Violin Sonatas by Sulius Katchen
Buy used from: $44.89
The great Czech violinist Josef Suk is one of my all-time favorite violinists, and I treasure these recordings. The American pianist Julius Katchen, who accompanies Suk, is also remarkable, and more emotional and volatile in this music than Ashkenazy. Another classic.
Brahms: Violin Sonatas Nos.1-3Brahms: Violin Sonatas Nos.1-3
Buy used from: $6.38
This is an earlier Decca release of the same recording above by Suk and Katchen. Presumably it is on a German pressing, which some collectors prefer.
David Oistrakh EditionDavid Oistrakh Edition
Buy used from: $45.99
I don't yet own this set, even though I am a huge Oistrakh fan. Included are performances of Violin Sonatas 2,3 with Sviatoslav Richter; if these are the same Oistrakh/ Richter performances as on my "Le Chant Du Monde" disc, they are certainly worth having; however, there is not enough information provided for me to say with certainty. (They are also available separately on one disc.)
Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 5 "Spring"; Brahms: Piano Sonatas Nos. 1 & 3Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 5 "Spring"; Brahms: Piano Sonatas Nos. 1 & 3
Buy used from: $34.06
David Oistrakh performing Brahms Violin Sonatas 1 & 3 with pianist Frieda Bauer. These are also classic performances, and very much in the same league as the Suk/Katchen performances. (The 1st Violin Sonata performance here is the same as on my "Le Chant du Monde" disc; however, that disc does not include the 3rd Violin Sonata with Bauer.)
Brahms: Violinsonate A-Dur op. 100; Prokofiev: Violinsonate f-moll op. 80Brahms: Violinsonate A-Dur op. 100; Prokofiev: Violinsonate f-moll op. 80
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $12.96
Richter and Oistrakh performing Sonata No. 2 in a live concert. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with the sound quality of this release, finding it difficult to listen to. Which is surprising since I have generally found Orfeo releases to be very good in the past. Perhaps listeners with a better sound system than mine will be more satisfied.
Brahms: Sonata in G No1, Op. 78 / Grieg: Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 1 in F Op. 8 / Shostakovich: String Quartet No. 3 Op. 73Brahms: Sonata in G No1, Op. 78 / Grieg: Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 1 in F Op. 8 / Shostakovich: String Quartet No. 3 Op. 73 by Rudolf Barshai
Buy used from: $39.99
Fine Russian recordings by Oistrakh, with pianist Lev Oborin, of Sonata No. 1. (Interestingly enough, Oborin was Ashkenazy's teacher.)
Brahms: Violin Concerto; Violin Sonata No. 3Brahms: Violin Concerto; Violin Sonata No. 3
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $5.95
This legendary Oistrakh recording of the Brahms Violin Concerto now comes with a special bonus--the Violin Sonata No. 3 with pianist Vladimir Yampolsky, recorded in 1955.
Brahms: Violin Sonata No. 1, Op. 78; Horn Trio, Op. 40; Vieuxtemps: Ballade et polonaise, Op. 38 [Hybrid SACD]Brahms: Violin Sonata No. 1, Op. 78; Horn Trio, Op. 40; Vieuxtemps: Ballade et polonaise, Op. 38 [Hybrid SACD]
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $42.02
Over the decades, I have also cherished violinist Arthur Grumiaux's recordings of these works, with pianist Gyorgy Seebok (originally released on the Phillips label), but unfortunately, they are now out of print--except for this Penatone hybrid SACD issue, which includes only the first sonata. Highly recommended, nevertheless.
Brahms: Violin Concerto; Violin Sonata No. 1 [Australia]Brahms: Violin Concerto; Violin Sonata No. 1 [Australia] by Ferras
Buy used from: $44.57
Christian Ferras is not a violinist you hear talked about much these days, but he was exceptional in the 2nd Violin Sonata. Unfortunately, that recording is now out of print, and all that I could find on Amazon was this import recording of Violin Sonata No. 1 (coupled with the Violin Concerto).
Brahms, Shostakovich: Sonatas for Violin and PianoBrahms, Shostakovich: Sonatas for Violin and Piano
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $16.95
Violinist Oleg Kagan was a student of David Oistrakh, and after Oistrakh died, Sviatoslav Richter began to regularly perform with Kagan. Sadly, Kagen died in the late 1980s of Leukemia--a very great loss to the music world. (In addition to many wonderful "Live Classics" discs, in his final years Kagen made a "live" recording of Bach Sonatas and Partitas for Erato that is beyond words.)
Sonatas with RichterSonatas with Richter by Sviatoslav Richter
Buy new: $7.98 / Used from: $35.40
I believe that this is the same recording as above of the Brahms Violin Sonata No. 1, with Kagen and Richter--now on a discount label, along with a Mozart Violin Sonata, and a Haydn Piano Sonata. You will definitely want to sample this first, as Kagan takes the opening movement of the Brahms faster than most.
Violin SonatasViolin Sonatas by Brahms
Buy used from: $31.99
Some reviewers have considered these to be eccentric interpretations, however, I am adding them to my list because violinist Gideon Kremer (another Oistrakh student), and pianist Valery Afanassiev play the Adagio of the 1st Sonata very, very slowly--it must be the slowest on record; and I am wondering--judging from Brahms' note to Clara Schumann--whether this isn't what the composer had in mind.
Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms: Violin Sonatas [Box Set]Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms: Violin Sonatas [Box Set]
Buy new: $63.98 / Used from: $32.95
As the above Brahms recordings are now out of print and expensive, except for a CD-R reprint from Archiv Music, there is also the option of purchasing them in this larger discount set, which contains all of Kremer's violin sonata recordings for DG.
Brahms: Sonatas in G major Op. 78 & A major Op. 100; Hungarian Dances Nos. 2, 5 & 20Brahms: Sonatas in G major Op. 78 & A major Op. 100; Hungarian Dances Nos. 2, 5 & 20
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $4.65
EDIT: I completely forgot about these great "historic" performances by violinist Adolf Busch and his son in law, Rudolph Serkin. The sound quality is very poor, but the performances will make you forget about it (read David Bryson's fine review). Included on this Pearl release are Brahms Violin Sonatas 1 & 2, and Schumann's Violin Sonata, No. 1. (For me, the Schumann has never been surpassed.)
Brahms: Violin Sonatas / Horn TrioBrahms: Violin Sonatas / Horn Trio
Buy used from: $37.38
A EMI References release of Brahms Violin Sonatas 1 and 2. This is the recording that I own, and am happy with; however, at $56 for a single CD it appears to be out of print.
The Busch/Serkin Duo: Public Performances, 1934-1939The Busch/Serkin Duo: Public Performances, 1934-1939
Buy used from: $59.95
A boxed set of live concert performances from the Music and Arts label, which includes Brahms Violin Sonatas 1 and 3, among other pieces. This set is the only way to acquire a Busch/Serkin performance of the Brahms Violin Sonata No. 3; although--be warned--it is a "live" historical recording, and the sound quality is worse than on the studio recordings above.
Bach: Sonata BWV 1018; Brahms: Sonata Op. 78; Horn TrioBach: Sonata BWV 1018; Brahms: Sonata Op. 78; Horn Trio
Buy new: $21.98 / Used from: $13.99
There are many different releases of the Busch/ Serkin studio recordings, each with a different line up of music, so you may wish to check the database further to compare prices, etc. This is from the excellent APR label, but includes only Brahms Violin Sonata 1.
