My Favorite Leading Ladies

All About Eve (Two-Disc Special Edition)All About Eve (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $8.92
Well come on. Of course this is on here. Isn't Bette everyone's favorite leading lady? All About Eve has what is arguably the greatest script ever written. And it's just swell besides.
Stage DoorStage Door
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $2.45
Doubly terrific-- Ginger Rogers AND Katharine Hepburn. Really funny at times...the melodrama's a tad dated, but no one watches it for that anyway. Much cooler than The Women and just as catty.
Auntie MameAuntie Mame
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $10.95
His Girl Friday is another great movie with Ros Russell, but she does share it with an also-fabulous Cary Grant. Here she's all alone, and just as great. After seeing Mame, all of her other performances seem like warm-ups.
Easter Parade (Special Edition)Easter Parade (Special Edition)
Buy new: $24.49 / Used from: $7.50
Yes, it's Judy. Which alone should convince those of you who haven't seen it. Aside from having Judy (though, really, asking for more is pushing it), Easter Parade also has about a hundred great songs by Irving Berlin. Give or take. The DVD also contains the documentary PBS did a while back about Ms. Garland.
The Lady Eve - Criterion CollectionThe Lady Eve - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $27.99 / Used from: $19.59
I have a feeling this list is gonna have quite a few movies with Barbara Stanwyck. But that's not a warning-- it's something of an invitation, an endorsement. Because let's face it, she rocks. This is my favorite Preston Sturges' movie, probably because it seems more toned down than the others.
Easy Living (Universal Cinema Classics)Easy Living (Universal Cinema Classics)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $6.58
I first saw Jean Arthur in The Ex-Mrs. Bradford and she's just dandy. Her voice, her mannerisms are perfect for screwball comedy and this one's marvelous.
The Lady Vanishes - Criterion CollectionThe Lady Vanishes - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $26.49 / Used from: $17.50
'Tis a pity that Margaret Lockwood is not too well known outside England, as she was great in this movie, one of Hitchcock's last in England.
Leave Her to HeavenLeave Her to Heaven
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $5.71
This is Gene Tierney's movie-- all of it. She does a great job in this noir-flavored melodrama. Also check out Laura, a really well done mystery.
Charade: The Criterion Collection (Widescreen Edition)Charade: The Criterion Collection (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $32.49 / Used from: $14.10
Okay, who adores this movie? Show of hands? It's my absolute favorite with Audrey Hepburn, and Cary Grant gives another solid performance. It has a very Hitchcockian vibe going on, which only adds to the experience. Be careful, though...it's public domain now and only Criterion gives it a transfer worthy of the movie.
Waterloo BridgeWaterloo Bridge
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $12.00
I figured most of you kiddos have already seen Gone With the Wind, hence its exclusion from this list. Anyhow, Waterloo Bridge is great in its own way...though it's certainly not the feel good movie of 1940.
Sweet CharitySweet Charity
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $6.79
This was Bob Fosse's first foray into directing, and it's really a neat little film. This may be for hardcore Fosse and/or Shirley Maclaine fans only, though. If your the type of gal (or fella) who prefers to take it slow, I'd try The Apartment.
Seance on a Wet AfternoonSeance on a Wet Afternoon
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $11.13
It's so odd that Kim Stanley was never more famous...she does a remarkable job here as medium. This is one of the few times in which I can refer to a movie as "atmospheric" and be able to maintain a straight face.
Where the Boys AreWhere the Boys Are
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $5.07
Both Paula Prentiss and Dolores Hart are really fun to watch in this one, which was Connie Francis' movie debut in 1960. The ending is kind of different from the other parts of the movie, but still above average.
The Heiress (Universal Cinema Classics)The Heiress (Universal Cinema Classics)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $7.99
Again, for those of you who saw Gone With the Wind and enjoyed the character of Melanie-- check this one out. It should be a...fun...surprise.
Ball of FireBall of Fire
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $12.22
Once again Barbara Stanwyck proves that she is way cooler than any of us could ever dream of being. Plus, it's pretty interesting to see Gary Cooper play a geek.
Midnight LaceMidnight Lace
You can smell the ending a mile off, or nearly, but it's still a really enjoyable movie. Doris Day plays a character who, if not entirely against type, is a little bit different than the ones she's known for.
Alice AdamsAlice Adams
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $4.58
In 1935, Bette Davis won the Oscar for her work in Dangerous. However, she felt that it was more of a consolation prize and that Katharine Hepburn had really deserved it for Alice Adams. When I first heard this, I had seen Dangerous and loved it. After viewing Alice Adams, I agree with Bette.
Midnight (Universal Cinema Classics)Midnight (Universal Cinema Classics)
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $6.59
Believe it or not (actually, do believe it-- why would I lie here?), I never really liked Claudette Colbert before seeing this. I'd seen It Happened One Night and still nothing, so there much be something good here, right?
Lady On A Train [VHS]Lady On A Train [VHS]
Buy used from: $3.43
Yeah, okay...some people prefer the musicals Deana did as a kid. They're swell, but so is Lady on a Train, a sort of thriller comedy done with a twist of noir.
The Major and the Minor (Universal Cinema Classics)The Major and the Minor (Universal Cinema Classics)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $159.62
My favorite Ginger Rogers comedy. Well, one of 'em. She plays a woman who hasn't the money for a adult train ticket, but just enough for the children's far so she...well, you get the picture. This was Billy Wilder's first time directing, and he does a great job.
Marked WomanMarked Woman
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $6.96
My second favorite Bette Davis performance, and a really watchable movie. This was based off the Lucky Luciano trial, and maintains a great pace throughout. Humphrey Bogart shows off his acting chops as a lawyer and the supporting players (particularly Lola Lane) are great as well.
Sorry, Wrong NumberSorry, Wrong Number
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $6.89
This is a role we're not quite used to-- Barbara Stanwyck as a victim. She does a great job as usual, though the plot's silly at times it's really entertaining.
For Me and My Gal (Snap Case)For Me and My Gal (Snap Case)
Buy used from: $2.50
Judy Garland's terrific in this, the first movie in which she received star billing alone, above the title. For Me and My Gal's pretty long, but it doesn't seem that way with all the songs thrown in. As far as musicals go, this one's more believable than most-- all of the performinf takes place on stage.
CabaretCabaret
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $3.00
Okay, Liza's a bit later than most of the actresses featured here, but it's just that great of a performance. Same with the Ros/Mame thing...she became the character in a way that she's hardly imaginable as someone else.
If a Man AnswersIf a Man Answers
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $7.58
Yeah, yeah...Sandra Dee may not be Doris Day and Bobby Darin's no Rock Hudson. Still, this is light entertainment and quite enjoyable.

I positively loathe when people claim Joan Crawford was "not a great actress, but a great star." Watching this (or A Woman's Face, which unfortunately is only available as part of a set) proves otherwise.
