Bellini - Norma / Maria Callas, Ludwig, Corelli, Zaccaria, Teatro alla Scala, SerafinBellini - Norma / Maria Callas, Ludwig, Corelli, Zaccaria, Teatro alla Scala, Serafin by Orchestra e Coro del Teatro alla Scala
Buy new: $32.98 / Used from: $19.99
Callas doesn't have the vocal power of earlier recordings, but her portrayal of the druid priestess is feminine and touching. Ludwig and Corelli make fantastic portrayals of Adalgisa and Pollione

Buy new: $34.98 / Used from: $22.98
Though not the best recorded Norma, the 1954 studio set shows Callas in better voice and with more clear sound that live versions.
Bellini: NormaBellini: Norma
Buy new: $33.98 / Used from: $76.25
This is, perhaps, the best Norma ever recorded. Callas combines power, beauty, anger, and tragedy into a scorching and hair-raising portrayal of the spurned druid priestess.
Donizetti - Lucrezia Borgia / Sutherland, NPO, BonyngeDonizetti - Lucrezia Borgia / Sutherland, NPO, Bonynge
Buy new: $22.98 / Used from: $14.88
Though Dame Joan is sometimes known for her vocal self-indulgence, her Lucrezia Borgia is fantastic. She combines beauty and drama into this killer of a role. Marilyn Horne is splendid in the trouser role of Orsini.
Rossini: SemiramideRossini: Semiramide
Buy new: $38.98 / Used from: $19.99
Another great opera with the Sutherland-Horne combo. Though the male singers are slightly lacking, the leading ladies make up for it. Horne's work as a contralto is spine-tingling; Sutherland pulls out all the stops with her stratospheric coloratura.
Puccini - Turandot / Sutherland · Pavarotti · Caballé · Ghiaurov · Krause · Pears · LPO · MehtaPuccini - Turandot / Sutherland · Pavarotti · Caballé · Ghiaurov · Krause · Pears · LPO · Mehta
Buy new: $30.49 / Used from: $14.90
Though one might be skeptical about Joan Sutherland in the role of the Chinese princess, she uses her infamous glacial remoteness to her advantage in this recording of Puccini's last opera. Montserrat Caballe makes a fantastic Liu, and her pianissimo is sublime.
Mozart: Don GiovanniMozart: Don Giovanni by Mozart
Buy used from: $23.47
This recording, made in 1959, is like a who's who in the opera world. With Joan Sutherland as Donna Anna and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf as Donna Elvira you can't go wrong. This recording features all of EMI's best singers during the golden age of opera.
Verdi - Giovanna d'Arco (Joan of Arc)/ Caballé · Domingo · Milnes · LSO · LevineVerdi - Giovanna d'Arco (Joan of Arc)/ Caballé · Domingo · Milnes · LSO · Levine by Montserrat Caballé
Buy new: $21.98 / Used from: $12.96
Though a slightly rough piece of music, Verdi's early Bible opera, Joan of Arc, is fantastically dramatic. Placido Domingo makes a powerful and dramatic Charles VII of France, and Caballe's Joan is splendidly creative, beautiful and fiery.
Mozart: Die ZauberfloteMozart: Die Zauberflote
Buy used from: $32.90
Though this recording lacks the spoken dialogs written by Mozart, as was the fashion during the recording of this set, it is a fantastic representation of the opera. Once again, EMI finds the best of the best to sing. Lucia Popp's queen of the night is frightful and terrifying.
Puccini: Tosca (complete opera) with Maria Callas, Giuseppe di Stefano, Tito Gobbi, Victor de Sabata, Chorus & Orchestra of La Scala, MilanPuccini: Tosca (complete opera) with Maria Callas, Giuseppe di Stefano, Tito Gobbi, Victor de Sabata, Chorus & Orchestra of La Scala, Milan by Giacomo Puccini
Buy new: $29.49 / Used from: $11.79
Callas, though she never felt any particular affection for the role, is often remembered for her portrayal of Puccini's Tosca. Her first recording, made in mono-sound in 1953, is generally regarded as the best recording of the opera on record.
Donizetti - La Fille du Régiment / Sutherland, Pavarotti, Malas, Sinclair, ROH Covent Garden, BonyngeDonizetti - La Fille du Régiment / Sutherland, Pavarotti, Malas, Sinclair, ROH Covent Garden, Bonynge by Gaetano Donizetti
Buy new: $30.49 / Used from: $16.25
Though Donizetti is more famous for his tragic opera, Lucia di Lammermoor, his comedy about a silly-girl in love is quite entertaining. Sutherland is lively and comical; Pavarotti is simply stunning.
Cherubini: MedeaCherubini: Medea
Buy used from: $16.98
There are few recordings of Cherubini's opera Medea, and there have been no Medea worth mentioning since Callas' retirement from the stage. While her Dallas Medea, made live in '58, or the La Scala of '53 are of more fire and brimstone, her hard-to-find studio version is a faultless treasure.
Verdi: Aida (complete opera live 1951) with Maria Callas, Mario del Monaco, Oliviero de Fabritis, Orchestra & Chorus of del Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico CityVerdi: Aida (complete opera live 1951) with Maria Callas, Mario del Monaco, Oliviero de Fabritis, Orchestra & Chorus of del Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico City
Buy new: $23.98 / Used from: $29.83
Though she wasn't famous for her Aida, Maria Callas set the opera world ablaze in the early fifties with her portrayals of Verdi's heroine in Mexico City. This set, live in 1951, shows Callas with an endless voice and a staggering 10 second high E that sends the Mexican audience into a near-riot.
Verdi - Aida / L. Price · Vickers · Merrill · Gorr · Opera di Roma · SoltiVerdi - Aida / L. Price · Vickers · Merrill · Gorr · Opera di Roma · Solti by Giuseppe Verdi
Buy new: $48.99 / Used from: $18.45
This Aida is, perhaps, the most famous ever recorded and has remained the benchmark Aida for further generations. Price's conception of the tragic princess is beautiful and has the benefit of stereo-sound which is highly missed in Callas '51 Aida.
Donizetti - Lucia di Lammermoor / Sutherland · Pavarotti · Milnes · Ghiaurov · ROH Covent Garden · BonyngeDonizetti - Lucia di Lammermoor / Sutherland · Pavarotti · Milnes · Ghiaurov · ROH Covent Garden · Bonynge by Richard Bonynge
Buy new: $44.99 / Used from: $14.94
There are many differences between the Lucias of Callas and Sutherland. However it can best be summarized by the mad-scenes: While Sutherland's Lucia sweetly and serenely crosses the line into un-reality, Callas' Lucia simply goes stark-raving mad with hysterical and dramatic shrieks. Both are worth having.

Verdi: La Traviata (complete opera live 1955) with Maria Callas, Giuseppe di Stefano, Carlo Maria Giulini, Orchestra & Chorus of La Scala, MilanVerdi: La Traviata (complete opera live 1955) with Maria Callas, Giuseppe di Stefano, Carlo Maria Giulini, Orchestra & Chorus of La Scala, Milan by Giuseppe Verdi
Buy new: $18.99 / Used from: $7.90
It's unfortunate that Maria Callas never recorded Verdi's Violetta of La Traviata in the studio. Her assumption of the role is staggering and heart-breaking. This set, made live at La Scala in 1955, shows why Callas has become the most renown soprano of the twentieth century; her "Sempre Libera" is worth the price of admission.
Bizet: Carmen (Complete Opera); Mirella Freni; Jon Vickers; Grace BumbryBizet: Carmen (Complete Opera); Mirella Freni; Jon Vickers; Grace Bumbry by Jon Vickers
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $7.28
The controversial African-American mezzo Grace-Bumbry made a fantastic recording of Bizet's Carmen with Jon Vickers and Mirella Freni in the other lead roles. While her singing is quite interesting, it is unfortunate that she doesn't do the speaking portions herself.
Bizet: Carmen (complete opera) with Maria Callas, Nicolai Gedda, Georges Pretre, Paris Opera OrchestraBizet: Carmen (complete opera) with Maria Callas, Nicolai Gedda, Georges Pretre, Paris Opera Orchestra by Georges Bizet
Buy new: $29.49 / Used from: $14.61
Made very late in her career, Callas' Carmen is interesting because it is her only mezzo-role. The role was perfect because it didn't tax her voice like the dramatic soprano parts she had done for the last twenty-years, and her recording left some feeling that perhaps she was naturally a mezzo, as her particularly powerful chest range denotes.
Der Stein der Weisen (The Philosopher's Stone) by Mozart, Hennebert, Schack, Gerl, Schikaneder / Pearlman, Boston BaroqueDer Stein der Weisen (The Philosopher's Stone) by Mozart, Hennebert, Schack, Gerl, Schikaneder / Pearlman, Boston Baroque by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $1.59
This opera, the collected work of 5 composers was lost for more than two centuries, and it wasn't until after the collapse of the Soviet Union that the music was found again. Though this recording will never make operatic history, it is a fun and interesting piece that clearly shows the trend that led to Mozart's Die Zauberflote.
