![]() | Mozart: Piano Sonatas K 310, 311, 533/494; Fantasy K.397
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $7.55 I love the way Alfred Brendel plays Mozart. These are some of his most recent recordings, and represent the culmination of a lifetime playing these works. Brendel has given us many wonderful Mozart recordings and concerts over the years, and I am sorry to see that he will be retiring at the end of 2008.
![]() | Mozart: Adagio in B minor, Piano Sonatas K 332, 333, & 457
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $6.98 More of Brendel's recent survey--wonderful playing and recorded sound.
![]() | Mozart: Piano Sonatas K330, K331, K570 / Rondo in A Minor, K511
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $2.00 More of the same.
![]() | Mozart: Piano Sonata in A minor, K310 / Fantasy in C minor, K396 / Rondo in A minor, K511 / Variations in D on a Minuet by Duport, K573 / Brendel by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Buy used from: $48.97 Don't let the picture on the cover fool you, these performances are from Brendel's pre-Phillips days, when he recorded for the Vanquard label. Some collectors prefer the younger Brendel in Mozart, which is why I include them.
![]() | Mozart Piano Sonatas K281, K282, K576 (Multichannel Hybrid SACD)
Buy used from: $84.85 More of Brendel's recent survey of sonatas. This one is available on either CD or SACD. I prefer this SACD version, even though I don't own an SACD player, because I have found that the sound is fuller and more life-like.
![]() | Piano Sonatas K. 310 & 457
Buy used from: $4.88 One of Brendel's better recordings from his superb earlier survey for Phillips. It is also included in the Phillips Duo series (2 for the price of 1), along with other sonatas, which is both less expensive and more desirable; however, I don't seem to be able to find it here. Which is too bad because it makes an excellent entry point for those wishing to buy only one release.
![]() | Dinu Lipatti Plays Bach, Mozart, Scarlatti & Schubert
Buy used from: $4.23 One of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. This was the only Mozart sonata (K.310) that Lipatti recorded (twice), and it is phenomenally well played. This CD also includes the finest performance of the Bach Partita No. 1 that I have ever heard. A real treasure, and very highly recommended. (There is a less expensive recent EMI release of this Cd as well)
![]() | Dinu Lipatti: Besancon Recital by Dinu Lipatti
Buy used from: $36.13 His second recording of Sonata K. 310, made from Lipatti's last concert--he was dying of Leukemia, and wanted badly to give his fans one more concert. So, his doctors doped him up on morphine so that he could play, and even though he hadn't touched a piano in weeks--this is the incredible concert that he played that night. A testament to genius.
![]() | Ivan Moravec Plays Mozart
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $8.75 This is a single Cd selection of Mozart sonatas played by the great Czech pianist, Ivan Moravec, which is also available in a more extensive boxed set from the Supraphon label, which includes other Moravec recordings. Great Mozart playing-- a true master.
![]() | Mozart: Complete Piano Sonatas, Vol. 1 by Elizabeth Rich
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $4.99 This is volume one of a full set of Mozart sonatas, played by Elizabeth Rich. Her playing of these sonatas has just the right sense of scale--that is, she doesn't pound the keys too hard, which I think Mozart would have approved of, and her interpretations are unique and insightful.
![]() | Mozart: Complete Piano Sonatas, Vol. 2 by Elizabeth Rich
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $6.32 Volume two of Rich's complete survey. Some listeners may feel that Rich lingers too much in places, and admittedly, she does take her time, but keep listening--she may grow on you, and when you then go back to your other sets, you may even be surprised at how superficial some of them sound in comparison.
![]() | Mozart Complete Piano Sonatas Violumn 3 by Elizabeth Rich
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $12.69 Volume three of Rich's complete survey.
![]() | Mozart: Complete Piano Sonatas, Vol. 4 by Elizabeth Rich
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $9.81 Volume four of Rich's complete survey.
![]() | Mozart: Complete Piano Sonatas, Vol. 5 by Elizabeth Rich
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $13.00 Volume five of Rich's complete survey. This is one of the better issues in her cycle. She astutely includes Beethoven's "Pathetique" Op. 13, which was undoubtedly composed as an homage to Mozart (there is a variation on Mozart's K. 457 within the piece). Judging from the sadness that Beethoven expresses here, it appears that the two composers did know each other better than we perhaps realize.
![]() | Mozart Recordings by Emil Gilels
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $17.48 A great Mozart pianist, and it is nice to finally have all of his superb DG performances under one roof (a two-disc set)--highly recommended.
![]() | Mozart: Piano Sonatas KV 282, 310 & 545 by Mozart
Buy used from: $15.95 A live concert that Sviatoslav Richter gave at the Barbican Center in London, and it is digitally recorded. Richter wasn't especially known for his Mozart, yet ironically Mozart was one of his favorite composers (along with Bach and Chopin).
![]() | Mozart: The Complete Piano Sonatas / Ronald Brautigam
Buy new: $65.98 These are fortepiano performances--that is, period instrument performances, and Ronald Brautigam is wonderful throughout, and very well recorded. For those who are solely used to hearing these works played on a modern piano, this set may be the easiest one to transition to, as Brautigam's instrument sounds closer to a modern piano than other fortepianos that I have heard.
![]() | Complete Sonatas & Variations
Buy new: $87.98 This is the same Brautigam set as above, but it now also includes--in addition to the complete sonatas--all of Mozart's wonderful "variations" for the pianoforte. Great playing, and all very well recorded, but unfortunately it is also more expensive.
![]() | Mozart: The Vienna Years
Buy used from: $12.70 Jos van Immerseel plays beautifully here, and far better than he did on his earlier Cd of Mozart piano music for the Accent label. I have really enjoyed this two-disc set-- highly recommended.
![]() | Mozart: Piano Sonatas, Complete [Box Set]
Buy new: $61.98 Bilson is another pianforte player whose Mozart recordings I have enjoyed, especially his wonderful set of Mozart Piano Concertos with John Eliot Gardiner and the English Baroque Soloists (and particularly K.466/ K.467). Excellent playing.
![]() | Mozart: Piano sonatas K330, 331 'alla turca', 332 /Staier
Buy new: $21.98 / Used from: $14.98 Yet another great pianoforte player (and harpsichordist-check out his Bach)--Andreas Staier. Recommended for those who are interested in period performances, but only want to buy one Cd.
![]() | Mozart: The Piano Sonatas [Box Set]
Buy new: $40.99 / Used from: $23.00 This is the latest "discount" release of the Pires set below. Well recorded and fine playing. Pires has amazingly nimble and quick hands, which are perfect for playing Mozart (and Bach). This is an excellent way to acquire a complete set of the sonatas at a very reduced price ($28).
![]() | Mozart: The Piano Sonatas [Box Set]
Buy new: $102.98 / Used from: $54.94 This is the original release of the Pire's set mentioned above. I included it because sometimes the pressings of the original release are of a better quality than the later "discount" releases. However, it is considerably more expensive as well ($70). There is also an earlier set of Mozart Piano Sonatas by Pires on the Denon label, which some collectors prefer to the later DG set.
![]() | Mozart: Piano Sonatas [Box Set]
Buy new: $33.99 / Used from: $15.34 A very recommendable set of performances from pianist Christoph Eschenbach, which is available at an attractive price ($23). The performances are analogue, yet the sound is surprisingly good, and remarkably life-like.
![]() | Complete Piano Sonatas 1-18 by Mozart
Buy used from: $87.12 This is Ingrid Haebler's later digital set made for the Denon Label. Her earlier analogue recordings were issued on the Phillips label. Generally, reviewers have preferred the later Denon set, but unfortunately both sets are now out of print. (UPDATE: Amazon.co.jp has Haebler's Complete Denon set for under $40 (US). Also, individual issues from this set can often be found in "used" outlets.)
![]() | Mozart: Piano Sonatas KV 331-333 & KV 545 [Australia] by Ingrid Haebler
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $44.95 Here is a much less expensive way to sample some of Haebler's Mozart playing. The performances here are drawn from her earlier Phillips set--on the excellent Eloquence label (an Australian import). Haebler was a student of Rudoph Serkin, and definitely has something to say in this music.
![]() | Alicia de Larrocha 2 - Great Pianists of the Century
Buy used from: $66.94 It is difficult to find Alicia de Larrocha's earlier Decca Mozart recordings these days, but included in this "Greatest Pianists" compilation is an entire CD devoted to them--Sonatas K.310, 330, and 331. Highly recommended.
![]() | Mozart: Piano Sonatas K330, K331, K332, K282 by Mozart
Buy used from: $4.95 Here is another "out of print" issue from de Larrocha's Decca or London years. These are analogue recordings that were released during the early days of the CD (mid-1980s), so the piano timbre sounds a little thin in the upper registers, but the playing is great. Also, this CD does duplicate two of the sonatas from the "Great Pianists" release above.
![]() | Mozart: The Piano Sonatas; Fantasias & Rondos [Box Set]
This is de Larrocha's later digitally recorded RCA set, which is probably the most inexpensive way, next to Pires and Eschenbach, for the budget minded collector to acquire these works in a complete set ($20). Nevertheless, I tend to be a little wary about the sound quality in these discount sets--I don't know what they do to the sound, but it is seldom as good as on the individual issues.
![]() | Mozart: Piano Sonatas
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $7.19 For those who wish to avoid the discount set, I have also included de Larrocha's RCA recordings in their original releases. This is volume 1, and includes Piano Sonatas K. 283, 331, 332, 333. The sound quality in this series tends to be first rate--especially volume 5--very natural and life-like.
![]() | Mozart: Sonatas K. 281, 282, 284, 545
Buy new: $7.98 / Used from: $3.99 Volume 2--this CD includes Piano Sonatas K. 281, 282, 284, and 584. (All 5 volumes are available to sample or buy on Amazon MP3 downloads.)
![]() | Mozart: Klaviersonaten Piano Sonatas Volume 3 K. 309, 310, 311, 330
Buy new: $8.98 / Used from: $2.49 Volume 3--Piano Sonatas K. 309, 310, 311, and 330. Like Horszowski, de Larrocha's approach to Mozart is very classical. Don't expect touches of romanticism or any excessive lingering--you won't get it here. However, what you do get is a lovely piano tone, and playing of exceptional beauty.
![]() | Mozart: Sonata In C/Fantasia In D/Sonata In F/Rondo In D/Fantasia In C/Sonata In C
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $5.85 Volume 4--which includes Piano Sonatas K. 279, 280, 457, and the two Fantasias--K. 397 and 475, and Rondo, K. 485.
![]() | Alicia De Larrocha Plays Mozart, Volume 5
Buy used from: $2.94 Volume 5--this is the final volume, and includes Piano Sonatas K. 533, 570, 576, and Rondo, K. 511. I was listening to this CD in the car the other day, and was struck by what a wonderful improvisatory sense de Larrocha has in this music--something that is so rare today, and so vitally important to Mozart playing. I must admit I've underrated her RCA Mozart series in the past.
![]() | Mozart: Piano Sonatas, Vol. 1
Buy used from: $4.76 Edit: on this CD Dubravka Tomsic plays Mozart Sonata No. 4, K. 282, the Fantasia K. 475, and Sonata No. 14, K. 457-- the theme of which, as noted above, Beethoven adapted for the elegiac Adagio of his "Pathetique." Sadly, Koch seems to have discontinued this project--at least, I've never seen another volume in the series. Like Pires, Tomsic has amazing fingers (check out her Bach).
![]() | Mozart: The Complete Piano Sonatas, Vol. 1: Sonatas Nos. 1-8
Buy used from: $86.81 Edit: Volume 1 of Horszowski's survey of Mozart Sonatas on the Arbiter label has become available, and so I am finally able to add it to my list. Unfortunately, at $87 it is a bit pricey, but the series has apparently gone out of print. Suffice it to say that the great Theodor Leschetizky, with whom Horszowski studied, once said-- "Mozart is in Horzsowski's soul."
