![]() | Butterfly
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $5.43 I watched this awhile ago, but still remember both the pure innocence, and the sad reality that are married so poignantly in this film.
(please be aware there is at least one explicit scene in this film if I remember correctly)

![]() | Kolya
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $4.42 A beautiful film about a healing relationship between an child and a crusty old man. Life-affirming and touching.

![]() | Mostly Martha
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $5.94 You may have watched the American version of this film "No Reservations", but the German version is infinitaly more subtle and touching.

![]() | Children of Heaven
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $5.21 A beautiful film about a few critical days in the life of an Iranian family. This film represents to me the best of Iranian film - a slow, deep, subtle film with plenty of interest.

![]() | On A Clear Day
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $1.78 The best of British cinema - a small, family drama about a man dealing with mid-life ghosts. Replete with victorious zest for life.

![]() | Saving Grace
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $10.31 Okay, this is a quirky choice, but I found this film just plain funny. It's about a proper English lady who unknowingly becomes involved in illegal substance growing. Plently of character development and even a few touching moments in this small-town film. Consider this an unusual stray from upright films for me.

![]() | Bread and Tulips
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $10.49 An endearing story of a woman finding herself while lost.
|
![]() | Eat Drink Man Woman
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $4.53 I've watched several movies dealing with this theme, but the Chinese version is, in my mind, the best. There is a wonderful, nuanced performance by the father figure and a touching moment of forgiveness that are not as strong in other versions.

![]() | Babette's Feast
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $3.71 Yes, this is the pin-ultimate foreign film experience. If you don't like slow-moving tales rich with character, don't watch it. But it should be the aperitif for any international film feast.

![]() | Big Night
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $4.75 I should start a food-related movie list because this movie is not strictly foreign, but it is little known. A great film about brothers coming to terms with different, and inferior, eating habits in America.
|
![]() | Burnt by the Sun
Buy used from: $34.48 I watched this many years ago, so my memory might not be 100 percent accurate, but I remember leaving this rather heavy, understated film with a deeper understanding of the Russian psyche. No great admirer of Chekhov's fatalism, this movie nevertheless benefits from its surprising but inevitable end.

![]() | The Widow of Saint-Pierre
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $7.49 An agonizingly beautiful film about redemption and human love overcoming evil. Not quite accurate to Biblical terms, but still thought-provoking and redemptive. This film has many slow scenes which I find engrossing, but may seem too slow to some.
