Dark Side Of The MoonDark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $3.69
This is probably the best album ever recorded. Nine dramatic, dreamy songs strung togther, forming a concept album about the world's craziness.
Wish You Were HereWish You Were Here by Pink Floyd
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.73
Dark Side's follow up is also nearly perect. It's another concept album. Features two epic soundscapes that transcend rock music as we know it.
The Wall (Deluxe Packaging Digitally Remastered)The Wall (Deluxe Packaging Digitally Remastered) by Pink Floyd
Buy new: $27.99 / Used from: $13.61
Pink Floyd's second-best selling album was made as the band was falling apart. The songs on here are shorter and more conventional than what you'd hear on other Pink Floyd albums. It's also their darkest album, telling the story of an insane rock star.
Siamese DreamSiamese Dream by Smashing Pumpkins
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $2.49
90s 'alt-rock' at its best. Amazing heavy, deep guitar sound, agnsty, emotive lyrics sung by a unique voice, and some very enjoyable and original melodies.
Mellon Collie and the Infinite SadnessMellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by Smashing Pumpkins
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $2.49
The Smashing Pumpkins are my favorite 90s band. This is their third album. It has this certain epic vibe to it, with a nice mix of soft prettiness and dark heaviness. It's an emotional journey complete with tons 'o' angst.
The Aeroplane Flies HighThe Aeroplane Flies High by The Smashing Pumpkins
Buy used from: $24.99
Songs from the MCIS sessions that didn't make it onto the album.
Building Nothing Out Of SomethingBuilding Nothing Out Of Something by Modest Mouse
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $5.49
My favorite indie rock album. It' actually a compilation of non-lp songs from the first phase of Modest Mouse's career. 12 perfect songs with amazing, quirky (in a sad, lonely sense) lyrics and catchy/jagged instrumentation.
No One's First, and You're NextNo One's First, and You're Next by Modest Mouse
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $6.74
Fast forward to present-day. Another collection of non-lp tracks, this time from the "new" Modest Mouse. In the 90s, they were a three-piece. These days things are a lot more complicated. Still has that poppiness that's always been there.
Are You ExperiencedAre You Experienced by The Jimi Hendrix Experience
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $4.83
The best music to come out of the 1960s. This is the first album by who a lot of people will agree is the best guitarist of all time. It rocks and bends the mind simultaneously.
Weezer (Blue Album)Weezer (Blue Album) by Weezer
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $2.44
Very accessible and irrestible pop with lots of distorted guitars that never gets old.
ElephantElephant by The White Stripes
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $7.50
I've heard it said that this is destined to be THE classic rock album of the 2000s. Then I heard a whole mess of cynics and naysayers. Whatever. Take a listen and decide for yourself.
White Blood CellsWhite Blood Cells by The White Stripes
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $7.00
More minimalistic than "Elephant". When I was younger, I thought it was a concept album about puppy love. It's not supposed to be, but it feels like it to me. Contains the classic "We're Going To Be Friends".
Get Behind Me SatanGet Behind Me Satan by The White Stripes
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $7.00
Here's where The White Stripes start to experiment a little. It's an eclectic mix, with piano ballads, pop songs, and a funny little bluegrass tune. There are still plenty of rockers, too.
MTV Unplugged in New YorkMTV Unplugged in New York by Nirvana
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $1.65
My favorote live album. This and "Building Nothing Out of Something" are great for long car or bus rides. It's a much softer, more melodic take on Nirvana's music with a certain warmth to it.
NevermindNevermind by Nirvana
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $1.56
People NEVER shut up about this album. Some trash it, some worship it. I think it's excellent, especially the first six songs.
ParanoidParanoid by Black Sabbath
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $2.49
Black Sabbath was the first metal band. I'm not a huge fan of "real" metal, but I love early Black Sabbath. There's so much sheer power in their music! Here's their signiture album.
Master of RealityMaster of Reality by Black Sabbath
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.99
No one can make riffs like Tony Iommi. This album is the origin of the deep, heavy guitar sound I described under "Siamese Dream". Also be on the lookout for Geezer Butler's psychedelia-ish bass parts.
NebraskaNebraska by Bruce Springsteen
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $3.89
This is the only Springsteen album I own. The music on here is haunting, moving, and beautiful. It's very stripped down as well.
So Tonight That I Might SeeSo Tonight That I Might See by Mazzy Star
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $2.54
Speaking of haunting and beautiful, here's a band I discovered this past summer. This album is nice and soothing, but also trippy. Hope Sandoval is by far my favorite female vocalist.
SisterSister by Sonic Youth
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.22
This summer was also when I discovered Sonic Youth, who have become one of my all-time favorite bands. Cool, dissonent rock and roll that will blow your mind. It also has a a bit of a spooky feel.
DirtyDirty by Sonic Youth
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $2.37
More cool dissonence. Probably the hardest-rocking Sonic Youth album.
A Thousand LeavesA Thousand Leaves by Sonic Youth
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $2.24
Still noisy, but on this album Sonic Youth goes into very melodic, warm territory. Has a certain quietness, despite all the feedback and noise.
Sea ChangeSea Change by Beck
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $3.50
I got denied by someone I was very attracted to one day. That week I bought this album. It's the saddest album I own, and one of the most beautiful.
GueroGuero by Beck
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $3.00
Beck never stays in one place for very long. I'd reccomend that you check out all his album. Here's one of his best, with beats courtesy of The Dust Brothers.
The IncidentThe Incident by Porcupine Tree
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.74
Porcupine Tree (specifically their genius frontman Steven Wilson)has been pregressing since the late 80s. I think this is their best album, a perfect blend of accesibilty and experiementalism. It's also a concept album in the tradition of "Dark Side of the Moon".
SignifySignify by Porcupine Tree
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $39.85
Here's a much earlier album. It's very creepy and dark, having a way of putting a listener in a kind of trance. Like some kind of wonderful nightmare.
The Downward SpiralThe Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $2.48
A song cycle about self-destruction and inner pain. Very dense and clearly influenced by "The Wall".
The FragileThe Fragile by Nine Inch Nails
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $3.99
Nine Inch Nails are one of the great 90s bands. This is probably Trent Reznor's crowing achievement as a composer. The music is still dark and angry.
OK ComputerOK Computer by Radiohead
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $3.28
A perrenial favorite for crtics. Has "classic" written all over it, with an amazing collage of effects and sounds. It's pretty gloomy, too.
VitalogyVitalogy by Pearl Jam
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01
This one's hard to describe. I guess you could call it Pearl Jam's "experimental" album. I think the mix of grunge and weirdness is very interesting and that it gives the album an epic feel. It sounds like life.
Thick as a BrickThick as a Brick by Jethro Tull
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $6.97
An endlessly enternaining 44-minute prog epic. It's not spacey or cosmic at all, though. In fact, it's almost folky. The satirica; lyrics are also very fun to listen to.
The Velvet UndergroundThe Velvet Underground by The Velvet Underground
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $3.98
Another stark, quiet album. The songs are very poignant and the production is nice and clean, probabl due to the minimalism of the music.
The Velvet Underground & NicoThe Velvet Underground & Nico by The Velvet Underground
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $3.94
Another very hyped album. I figured I ought to include it in here, because you need to listen to it. The Velvet Undergound are kind of like The Beatles of alternative/underground music.
LovelessLoveless by My Bloody Valentine
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $3.49
A mind-blowing sound-wash that reminds me of being in the shower. There's a lot of wonderful noise on here that creates a euphoria in your ears.
Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to HeavenLift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven by Godspeed You Black Emperor
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $11.69
This is what I'm listening to right now. Awesome epic soundscapes. It's a two-disc album with four songs on it, each clocking in at about 20 minutes in length. Another definitive 2000s album.
AenimaAenima by Tool
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $5.25
Another foray of mine into metal territory. Prog-metal, to be exact. Floydtallica.
The White Album (Remastered)The White Album (Remastered) by The Beatles
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $11.99
The most celebrated band of all time gives Jimi a run for his money on this album. This is where The Beatles conquered popular music with an an astounding variety of pop genres.
John Lennon/Plastic Ono BandJohn Lennon/Plastic Ono Band by John Lennon
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.74
John Lennon "let's it all out".
