My Ever-Expanding Jazz Obsession Part 1
By an Amazon.com customer
Out ThereOut There by Eric Dolphy
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $6.24
Chamber jazz filled with virtuosity. The looseness and sense of melody in Eric's playing was just awesome. The songs "Out There" and "Feathers" are beautiful and angular sax workouts, and "Sketch of Melba" is the very definition of Jazz flute.
Out to LunchOut to Lunch by Eric Dolphy
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $4.65
Eric's last album, and the one that usually get's mentioned most. The addition of vibes adds a nice floating feeling to it. Everyone plays their hearts out.
We Travel the Spaceways/Bad and BeautifulWe Travel the Spaceways/Bad and Beautiful by Sun Ra
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $8.93
My first Sun Ra CD. This is a perfect mix of his late 50's-early 60's sound: the vocal chants, the sorrowful bop numbers, the strange instrumentation. Amazing. The trumpet solo on "Tapestry From An Asteroid" is the saddest thing I've ever heard.
Maiden VoyageMaiden Voyage by Herbie Hancock
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.74
It took a long time for this one to sink in with me. It's just so quiet. You can't play this as background music. You won't hear anything. Put it in, put on a pair of headphones, and pay attention.
The Complete Capitol RecordingsThe Complete Capitol Recordings by Art Tatum
Buy new: $26.98 / Used from: $8.95
The..Greatest..Jazz..Pianist..Ever! He may have been half-blind, but he sounds like he had four or six hands when he played. Dense melody, dense. I'm also proud to say he's from my hometown of Toledo, OH.
Verve Jazz Masters 14Verve Jazz Masters 14 by Wes Montgomery
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $0.98
When you hear Wes's gentle octaves backed by strings, you might think "mellow mood music". But stick with this. He was a phenomenal guitarist. The track "Bumpin'" is one of the most deliciously swinging things I've ever heard. If you're looking for something with a little less syrupy backing, look for one of his live albums like "Full House".
Ellington UptownEllington Uptown by Duke Ellington
Buy used from: $3.00
Where to start with Ellington? It can be a daunting task - his career spanned the 20's-70's. This is a prime 50's recording of his. "Skin Deep" is one of the best drum-based jazz songs out there.
A Night at Birdland, Vol. 1A Night at Birdland, Vol. 1 by Art Blakey
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $5.92
Prime Art Plakey. Just about the first-ever jazz live album, and still one of the best.
Kirk's WorkKirk's Work by Rahsaan Roland Kirk
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $4.59
Kirk was an astonishingly talented blind reedman.

Mating CallMating Call by Tadd Dameron with John Coltrane
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $5.30
If you're looking for a place to start with Coltrane, any of his 50's albums is a good start, whether he's the leader or not. It provides a mellow way in, especially if you're a little afraid of his freer stuff.

Masada, Vol. 2: BeitMasada, Vol. 2: Beit by Masada
Buy used from: $17.99
John Zorn weaves the use of Jewish music scales and the improvisitory elements of jazz into truly hypnotic music. There has never been a better trumpet/sax frontline than John Zorn and Dave Douglas. If you get into this sound, you have a very expensive habit in front of you.

Jungle Nights in HarlemJungle Nights in Harlem by Duke Ellington
Buy used from: $3.59
This is a prime sampler of Ellington's Cotton Club band days, and a relatively cheaper start than one of the box sets covering this period. It is enjoyable late 20's/early 30's jazz.
The Harry James Years, Vol. 1The Harry James Years, Vol. 1 by Benny Goodman & His Orchestra

The Hawk Flies HighThe Hawk Flies High by Coleman Hawkins
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $3.43
Coleman was the first jazz sax star, and that was way back in the 30's. This is a superb jamming date from the late 50's. A good introduction to the Hawk's world as any. On "Juicy Fruit", Idrees Sulieman holds a note for a full minute. It's insane.
Are You Hep to the Jive? Are You Hep to the Jive? by Cab Calloway
Buy new: $7.98 / Used from: $4.25
God, this guy had charisma. Like a lot of people of my generation, I first saw him in "The Blues Brothers". That couldn't prepare for that amazing voice that could make you laugh and stomp your feet at the same time. Most of his stuff is on compilations, but this is still on of the best ones to get The original "Minnie the Moocher" is actually really spooky.
