not essential, but helps a lot. You can slow down CDs and learn the songs by ear. That is the ultimate goal, to play by ear. Whenever you want to learn a song, try to learn it by ear; even if you fail, and look up the tab, it's important that you try to learn every song by ear, eventually you'll get it.

The man who gives bela fleck old time lessons over the internet recommended these headphones to me. They are great. They dont surround your ear...and that is important. Also, it's easier to play along with a song using open ear headphones, then playing along with a stereo. They sound great and they are cheap. I have 400$ headphones, but I use these.
