![]() | Undiscovered Country: A Novel by Lin Enger
Buy new: $16.31 / Used from: $2.42 I recommend. Be aware there are a few instances of bad language. I usually anything by Enger, but not this one. I'll just never be a fan of the Hamlet story, I guess (though the original has some great lines).
![]() | The People of Sparks (Books of Ember) by Jeanne DuPrau
Buy new: $6.50 / Used from: $0.89 I recommend. For me this book, and its predecessor, exemplify one of the reasons I love science fiction/fantasy: for exploring very real issues, though in a fictional context.
![]() | Fool Moon (The Dresden Files, Book 2) by Jim Butcher
Buy used from: $22.74 I prevaricate. Again. This book has too much foul language and sexual overtones (though it doesn't go into gruesome detail). But the story gripped me and wouldn't let go until the end.
![]() | A Carribean Mystery by Agatha Christie
I recommend. I didn't want to spend very much time at the library, so I picked up a few books I could trust. I trust Agatha.
![]() | Ruth (Oxford World's Classics) by Elizabeth Gaskell
Buy new: $9.31 / Used from: $6.64 I recommend. If I were feeling ambitious, I'd read "The Scarlet Letter" again and compare/contrast it with this book. It's much heavier than other Gaskell books I've read, and took me longer to read. But I liked it in the end. I'm so glad the folks in the book got around to thinking Ruth shouldn't be condemned forever because of her mistake.
![]() | The Sittaford Mystery (St. Martin's Minotaur Mysteries) by Agatha Christie
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.05 I recommend. I *love* Agatha Christie's young, smart, assertive women...
![]() | Dearest Dorothy, Slow Down, You're Wearing Us Out! (Baumbich, Charlene Ann, Dearest Dorothy, Bk. 2.) by Charlene Baumbich
Buy new: $11.05 / Used from: $0.01 I recommend. Not great literature. Not shy about religion. Watch out for the corniness. But it's a sweet story.
![]() | The Christmas Sweater by Glenn Beck
Buy new: $11.69 / Used from: $7.46 I recommend. I expected something along the lines of Richard Paul Evans and that's pretty much what it is, except it didn't draw me in as much as Evans can. Another sweet story...
![]() | Payment in Blood (Inspector Lynley) by Elizabeth George
Buy new: $11.20 / Used from: $2.54 I prevaricate. I'm a fan of the Inspector Lynley PBS series. So, I'm reading the books now. This book is far more complicated than the TV version. I liked it because I like the stars of all the books - Lynley, Havers, Helen, St James, Deborah... I hesitate to recommend it because of several instances of foul language and sex scenes that go a bit beyond what I'm comfortable with.
![]() | Well-Schooled in Murder (Inspector Lynley) by Elizabeth George
Buy new: $11.20 / Used from: $3.56 Ditto "Payment in Blood".
![]() | Aunt Dimity Slays the Dragon (Aunt Dimity Mystery) by Nancy Atherton
Buy new: $11.82 / Used from: $1.97 I recommend. This series truly lives up to its categorization as "cozy". A lovely way to spend an afternoon or evening.
![]() | Brisingr (Inheritance, Book 3) by Christopher Paolini
Buy new: $18.15 / Used from: $4.50 I recommend. This one didn't grab me like the first two in the series, but it was still fun to read and find out what happens...
![]() | The Kalahari Typing School for Men (No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, Book 4) by Alexander Mccall Smith
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $0.01 I recommend. I continue to enjoy this series.
![]() | Coraline by Neil Gaiman
Buy new: $9.35 / Used from: $1.61 I recommend. The story grabbed me right away. Could be too scary for young children.
![]() | The Raven in the Foregate (Brother Cadfael Mysteries) by Ellis Peters
Buy new: $15.75 / Used from: $1.98 I recommend. I can always trust Cadfael.
![]() | Sabriel [SABRIEL] [Mass Market Paperback] by Garth(Author) Nix
Buy used from: $4.15 I recommend. There are some references to sex and the male anatomy (they seemed too contrived to me and the story would be fine without them) where the topic is handled appropriately.
![]() | Paper Towns by John Green
Buy new: $12.23 / Used from: $3.32 I don't recommend. The story caught my interest quickly, but I stopped reading it about 25 pages into it. There was just enough foul language and talk about sex to make me feel uncomfortable.
![]() | Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks, The by E. Lockhart
Buy new: $6.80 / Used from: $5.51 I recommend. This book has a strong feminist bent which might disturb some, but didn't bother me. I don't remember any foul language except for a couple of instances of letters standing in for foul language. Some brief references to sex that were handled appropriately. Thought provoking!
![]() | Ms. Hempel Chronicles by Sarah Shun-lien Bynum
Buy new: $15.64 / Used from: $1.05 I recommend. There are a few instances of foul language. Sex outside of marriage is not promoted or detailed, but occurs. I can't put my finger on exactly why I like this book, but I do... Maybe the short story form is growing on me.
![]() | From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.50 I recommend. I like Mrs. Frankweiler!
![]() | Chalice by Robin McKinley
Buy new: $12.34 / Used from: $0.42 I recommend. Note that the story takes place in some alternate time/world/universe with its unique "gods" and forms of worship. If that bothers you, don't read this. That doesn't bother me and I enjoyed the (very clean) story.
![]() | The Penderwicks on Gardam Street by Jeanne Birdsall
Buy new: $10.87 / Used from: $0.26 I recommend. A very nice family, the Penderwicks.
![]() | Fablehaven by Brandon Mull
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.30 I recommend. See what all the ruckus is about.
![]() | The Wolves of Willoughby Chase (The Wolves Chronicles) by Joan Aiken
Buy new: $6.50 / Used from: $0.01 I recommend. A sturdy gothic child's tale.
![]() | The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
Buy new: $10.52 / Used from: $6.00 I recommend! It *does* lean towards the dark side, for those whom that may trouble. But it's a great story and well told.
![]() | The Alchemyst: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel by Michael Scott
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $2.99 I recommend. Very, very fun to read.
![]() | The Laws of Harmony: A Novel by Judith R. Hendricks
Buy new: $11.69 / Used from: $0.77 I don't recommend... Though, I admit I enjoyed reading it. Bad language is minimal. No lurid sex scenes. The problem is that sex outside of marriage is accepted. There is also some discussion of abortion being a right, and rightly so. It's interesting that giving a child up for adoption is never explored though the Mother acknowledges her inadequate financial state.
![]() | A Suitable Vengeance (Inspector Lynley) by Elizabeth George
Buy new: $10.40 / Used from: $0.92 I don't recommend. But I enjoyed reading it. I love the characters and the mystery. I don't like the attitude towards sex outside of marriage. I also don't like the foul language.
![]() | 3 Willows: The Sisterhood Grows (3 Willows (Hardback)) by Ann Brashares
Buy new: $12.91 / Used from: $0.25 I recommend. I didn't find anything offensive in it. The story was fine. The tie-ins to the "The Sisterhood" felt forced and seemed plain silly to me.
![]() | Dead Girl Walking by Linda Joy Singleton
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $2.55 I recommend. Portrays the realities of teenagerhood without going into morbid detail. I remember two or three instances of foul language. A fun read - the book doesn't take itself too seriously.
![]() | The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley
Buy new: $15.64 / Used from: $11.71 I recommend! An excellent *and* clean (without being obvious or smug about it) read!
![]() | The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan
Buy new: $11.55 / Used from: $8.11 I recommend. Be aware that it deals with sexual arousal but doesn't take it too far (explicit "sex scenes"). Also be aware that religion is cast as a "bad guy". This makes me sad, but doesn't offend me. The story raises lots of questions that would be interesting to discuss with a group. It's also hard to put down!
![]() | Home: A Novel by Marilynne Robinson
Buy new: $16.50 / Used from: $2.90 I recommend. Be aware that it deals with some tough stuff - suicide, adultry, and more. But that's not the focus of the book and there's not one instance of foul language or a "sex scene". It's slow moving. It moved me deeply.
![]() | Agincourt: A Novel by Bernard Cornwell
Buy new: $18.47 / Used from: $3.49 I don't recommend. Please note I read only 15 - 30 pages before I put it down. It took only that long to get to a rape scene that turned me off.
![]() | The Forgotten Garden: A Novel by Kate Morton
Buy new: $17.16 / Used from: $11.67 I recommend. I can't say much about one aspect of this book that some may find shocking and disturbing without spoiling the story. This particular element didn't spoil the book for me. A very enjoyable read.
![]() | Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson
Buy new: $12.23 / Used from: $8.04 I recommend without any reservations. Historical fiction is my first love and Anderson puts it together so well.
![]() | The Seer of Shadows by Avi
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $4.31 I recommend. Another nice piece of historical fiction. Don't read it if you have issues with ghost stories.
![]() | The Redemption of Sarah Cain by Beverly Lewis
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $0.19 I recommend. Typical of Lewis: a tad self-righteous, very religiously oriented, predictable plot, but also sweet and you don't have to worry about running into something offensive.
![]() | Jarka Ruus (High Druid of Shannara, Book 1) by Terry Brooks
Buy new: $11.16 / Used from: $2.42 I recommend. I was quickly enveloped by the story and the characters. There are very few references to sex and no "sex scenes". A very fun read!
![]() | Tanequil (High Druid of Shannara) by Terry Brooks
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.05 Ditto from Jarka Ruus comments.
