Tausend Gülden: Sonatas from the Habsburg CourtTausend Gülden: Sonatas from the Habsburg Court
Some refreshing sonatas, including that one Chacona that gets included on every single Bertali disc (it is pretty catchy though, and the performance here is good).
Johannes Schenck: Les Fantaisies bisarres de la GoutteJohannes Schenck: Les Fantaisies bisarres de la Goutte
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $9.17
This has some smooth and satisfyingly complex pieces in which the viola de gamba sounds cleaner and livelier than I've heard before but doesn't dominate. Recommended!
Heinichen: Dresden ConcertiHeinichen: Dresden Concerti by Johann David Heinichen
Buy used from: $14.99
This is a double disc of briskly executed concertos which are inventive and have a great variety of sounds in them. Heinichen just keeps the ideas flowing.
Telemann: Paris Quartets, Vol. 2 [Hybrid SACD]Telemann: Paris Quartets, Vol. 2 [Hybrid SACD]
Buy new: $27.98 / Used from: $16.41
This is a masterful, silky performance of this selection of quartets which slips by so easily that it takes a few listens to realize how really good they are. Quite stunning. Recommended!
Dietrich Buxtehude: AbendmusikDietrich Buxtehude: Abendmusik
Buy used from: $45.44
Some very nice sonatas and other pieces which mostly have a continuo which keeps things moving nicely. Skip Sempe directs.
Concertos for the Kingdom of the Two SiciliesConcertos for the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies
Buy new: $12.98 / Used from: $8.99
A nice collection of light and graceful concertos by Alessandro Scarlatti, Francesco Durante, Giovanni Pergolesi and Nicola Porpora.
Flute SonatasFlute Sonatas by Bach
Buy new: $45.98 / Used from: $40.99
Some sublime, restrained flute playing on these sonatas by the master. The tempo is on the slow side, but here I'm in favour of that.
La Folia, 1490-1701La Folia, 1490-1701
Buy used from: $58.88
There are so many gems on this fine collection of mellow pieces from Jordi Savall with a smaller ensemble.
Lully - Ballet Music for the Sun King / Mary Enid Haines · Aradia Baroque Ensemble · Kevin MallonLully - Ballet Music for the Sun King / Mary Enid Haines · Aradia Baroque Ensemble · Kevin Mallon by Jean-Baptiste Lully
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $4.68
This is a heavenly disc, how could I only give it four stars in my review? This is a soundtrack to paradise with wonderful vocal pieces interspersed with playful and entertaining instrumental passages. Oh to see Lully and the King prance together in their tights...
Dietrich Buxtehude: Sonate a due, Op. 1Dietrich Buxtehude: Sonate a due, Op. 1
Buy used from: $41.00
These slow and methodical sonatas somehow keep my interest right through. The playing is excellent as well.
Vivaldi: Concertos for the EmperorVivaldi: Concertos for the Emperor
Buy new: $21.98 / Used from: $9.95
This starts out at 100 mph with some very tight playing, but the performance overall is well-judged and passionate, and the music veers off into some unexpected discordant passages. Interesting provenance to the score.
Music for Flute, Vol.2Music for Flute, Vol.2
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $27.44
Absorbing flute music by this early master of the instrument.
François Couperin: Chamber Music (Complete)François Couperin: Chamber Music (Complete)
Buy used from: $35.99
Yikes, so much wonderful music (on 7 CDs!) where does one begin? Played throughout with grace and enthusiasm, and contains some great tunes. I just listen and enjoy, but where I might get to judge it is in comparison with the other recording of L'Apotheoses de Lully (spelling?) with which I'm familiar, over which this one comes out top. A bargain.
Scarlatti: Piano SonatasScarlatti: Piano Sonatas
Buy new: $20.98 / Used from: $16.66
Sudbin's delicate touch is quite amazing and beguiling.
Flötenkonzert aus SanssouciFlötenkonzert aus Sanssouci
Buy used from: $7.06
Sumpuous flute concertos from CPR Bach, Franz Benda, Freddy II of Prussia and Quantz recommended to me by a friend. The flute flies so much that they verge on the romantic sometimes.
G. B. & G. Sammartini: Concerti & SinfonieG. B. & G. Sammartini: Concerti & Sinfonie
Buy used from: $27.14
This is a very well played selection from the Sammartini brothers' music with a nice contrast in alternating between Guiseppe's concertos and Giovanni's sinfonias. Ensemble 415 give a gutsy satisfying perfomance.
Biber: Unam Ceylum /Holloway * Assenbaum * MortensenBiber: Unam Ceylum /Holloway * Assenbaum * Mortensen by Lars Ulrik Mortensen
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $12.49
This performance has such a relaxd, almost careless quality about it, and yet it is so beautifully put together that one is left wondering where the manuscript stops and the interpretation begins.
C.P.E. Bach: The Complete Keyboard Concertos, Vol. 12C.P.E. Bach: The Complete Keyboard Concertos, Vol. 12
Buy new: $20.98 / Used from: $13.25
Just one wonderful selection of thse concertos from an ongoing series. Emmanuel Bach seems to take the concerto to very unexpected places - at least I often don't expect the developmental turns that he takes... The tangent piano sits well with the orchestra, and at times this sounds like concertos that just happen to include a keybord part.
Late Vivaldi Concertos: RV386 / RV235 / RV296 / RV258 / RV389 / RV251 - Giuliano Carmignola / Venice Baroque Orchestra / Andrea MarconLate Vivaldi Concertos: RV386 / RV235 / RV296 / RV258 / RV389 / RV251 - Giuliano Carmignola / Venice Baroque Orchestra / Andrea Marcon by Antonio Vivaldi
Buy new: $8.98 / Used from: $6.02
Carmignola enjoys himself with some fine late Vivaldi, and I enjoy him enjoying himself at this sort of thing.
Biber: Harmonia artificiosaBiber: Harmonia artificiosa
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $6.46
At last the Biber that made all the others hang together for me - don't ask how it did that. A soaring violin weaves and and flies over the the two instrument rythmn section, and it sounds like a marathon improvisation. This is baroque jamming at it's best.
Scarlatti: Concerti & SinfonieScarlatti: Concerti & Sinfonie
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $11.99
This is quite a mix of moods from the two Scarlatti's, from sombre to nimble.
Leclair - The Complete Flute Sonatas / B & W. Kuijken · R. KohnenLeclair - The Complete Flute Sonatas / B & W. Kuijken · R. Kohnen by Jean-Marie Leclair
Buy new: $23.98 / Used from: $25.25
Gentle and relaxing flute sonatas with a keyboard and violin accompaniment. Not quite JSB, but nevertheless well-played, soothing and enjoyable over 2 CDs.
G.A. Brescianello: Concerti, Sinfonie, OuvertureG.A. Brescianello: Concerti, Sinfonie, Ouverture
Buy used from: $164.19
Brescianello was violinist for the Elector of Bavaria for a period but also wrote some instrumental pieces, a selection of which comprises this CD. Some pieces are influenced by Vivaldi, some likely by more Northern Italian composers. It's played brightly and with enthusasm and is easy on the ear with some lovely melodies.
Tartini - The Cello Concertos · The Flute Concertos / L'Arte dell'Arco · GuglielmoTartini - The Cello Concertos · The Flute Concertos / L'Arte dell'Arco · Guglielmo by Giuseppe Tartini
Buy new: $20.98 / Used from: $58.98
I believe that L'Arte Dell'Arco are in the midst of recording all of Tartini's violin concertos!! They have fantastic reviews, but where do you begin? I ended up with this oddity, some of the few concertos that he wrote for insturments other than the violin. Some pleasing music, sly melodies, and the playing is excellent.
Marcello: 'La Cetra' Concertos / StandageMarcello: 'La Cetra' Concertos / Standage
Buy used from: $13.58
These concerti are quite wonderful - elegant, lively and enjoyable. There is a lot of ornamentation, but also a lot of intricate and pleasing passages, and some clever melodies. I keep finding new pleasures in passages that had previously partially passed me by. The woodwind seems quite to the fore in some of these pieces, and that provides for some nice variety.
Lully: Les Divertissements de VersaillesLully: Les Divertissements de Versailles by Jean-Baptiste Lully
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $10.98
This is as good as the Lully 'Ballet music for the Sun King' above, but has a different collection of his ballet and operatic music for the court. Some fine full choruses, and fanfares that somehow manage to sound delightfully restrained.
London Musik: Englische Barockmusik Für Hof Und TheaterLondon Musik: Englische Barockmusik Für Hof Und Theater
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $9.99
This is a wonderful mixed collection of early music by a variety of English or London-based composers with a fair amount of recorder. I can't identify all of the many instruments, but some are very lively and unusual in tone.
Giuseppe Valentini: 7 Bizzarrie per Camera, Op. 2 (Complete) - Aura Musicale / Balazs MateGiuseppe Valentini: 7 Bizzarrie per Camera, Op. 2 (Complete) - Aura Musicale / Balazs Mate
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $14.00
Not so bizarre chamber music, nicely performed by a small ensemble. However, the suddeen stops and starts and the lack of usual structure make this a disc of unexpected pelasures.
Blavet: Flute Sonatas (Complete)Blavet: Flute Sonatas (Complete)
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $38.03
Some smooth and mellow flute digressions. Disc one is pleasant but a bit samey, but things really get interesting on disc two and (to a lesser extent) on three.
Pergolesi - Stabat Mater · Salve Regina / Kirkby · Bowman · AAM · HogwoodPergolesi - Stabat Mater · Salve Regina / Kirkby · Bowman · AAM · Hogwood by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $13.33
Famously sublime piece of devotional music that expresses a personal side of unimaginable loss. Famous vocalists here do themsleves justice. Beautiful, but I have to be in the right mood.
Ouvertüren: Music for the Hamburg OperaOuvertüren: Music for the Hamburg Opera

Italian Violin Sonatas: Fabio Biondi/Europa GalanteItalian Violin Sonatas: Fabio Biondi/Europa Galante by Francesco Maria Veracini

A selection of joyfully played violin sonatas that have a bright, lively feel.
Dario Castello: Sonate Concertate in Stil ModernoDario Castello: Sonate Concertate in Stil Moderno
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $15.92
Interesting and, I find, slightly oddly orchestrated expanded sonatas by a composer little known today, but whose published music was nevertheless widely owned during his lifetime.
Rameau: Orchestral Suites (vol. 1)Rameau: Orchestral Suites (vol. 1)
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $4.94
This has some expressive pieces, many with quite a romantic feel. It's hard to believe that is is baroque period.
Zelenka: Complete Orchestral Works (3-CD Set)Zelenka: Complete Orchestral Works (3-CD Set)
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $23.20
I actually have only volume two of this collection (couldn't find it on a search). I was a little dissapointed after all the reviews I read about Zelenka's unusual musical style, in that it didn't seem that 'unusual' to me. However, it is very immediate and distinctive.
Venice Before Vivaldi: a portrait of Giovanni LegrenziVenice Before Vivaldi: a portrait of Giovanni Legrenzi by Jolianne von Einem
Buy used from: $30.00
Some nicely played selection of pieces by Legrenzi including a couple of gorgeous vocal pieces.

Is this really by Schmelzer? Not a problem, enjoy it anyway and wonder.
Cabezon: Tientos y GlosadosCabezon: Tientos y Glosados
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $3.72
Accessible and melodic early instrumental music. I'm not sure about the authenticity of the performance, because the music really seems ahead of its time, but for pure listening enjoyment this is quite a treat.
Jean-Féry Rebel: Les ElémensJean-Féry Rebel: Les Elémens
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $36.71
Starts out with crashing chords but then mellows into chamber music albeit with a slightly larger ensemble. Ejoyable but don't expect 'the planets'.
