The Perilous GardThe Perilous Gard by Elizabeth Marie Pope
Buy new: $12.24 / Used from: $1.98
A great period fantasy set (unusually) in the Elizabethan era, or its preceding days. Some very positive and deliberated Christian themes in the interchange between the pagan and inhuman "Fair Folk" and the heroine. Also a great look at worldview through a fantasy lens.
The Floating Island (The Lost Journals of Ven Polypheme)The Floating Island (The Lost Journals of Ven Polypheme) by Elizabeth Haydon
Buy used from: $2.85
A fun book playing with fantasy tropes and making them new--iffy elements are scary circumstances and the banishing of a ghost. The spiritual aspect of this world so far seems to not contradict Biblical tenets.
The Shadow Thieves (Cronus Chronicles)The Shadow Thieves (Cronus Chronicles) by Anne Ursu
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $0.13
Delving into Greek myth and creating a new story out of it--some New Age sorts of thinking underlying, but brings certain elements of the originals to life
The Gammage CupThe Gammage Cup by Carol Kendall
Buy used from: $17.25
The main characters have to leave their comforts to stand against what no one else believes will happen--and learn to be more themselves in spite of the pressures to conform in their village. Very fun, if not very deep.
Ella EnchantedElla Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine
Buy used from: $0.01
A fun retelling that is nothing like the movie (as far as I've been able to tell. It does an excellent job of making a very familiar story new--with all the charm of the original. I recommend all stories except "The Wish" by this author, so far. Her mini-books, Princesses of Bamarre--all are funny and appropriate for most ages.
Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the BeastBeauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast by Robin Mckinley
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $3.09
I love this book--it retells a very important fairy tale in a way that's beautiful and fresh. Affirms reading and studiousness but also the satisfaction in working with your own hands. The heroine is a proud tomboy, but appreciates feminine clothes and has a strong bond with her sisters. I cannot recommend any of this author's other books as unreservedly for children's reading.
King of ShadowsKing of Shadows by Susan Cooper
Buy used from: $0.01
This is a time-travel story involving Shakespeare--predictable elements of the Elizabethan era's particular faults (groteque punishments, lack of hygiene) appear, as it's partly historical fiction. It familiarizes one with theatre and the Bard's work especially A Midsummer Night's Dream. Great for older teens, especially.
The Wise Woman and Other Stories (Fantasy Stories of George MacDonald)The Wise Woman and Other Stories (Fantasy Stories of George MacDonald) by George MacDonald
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $4.46
All of George MacDonald's short fairy tales are amazing. Quite a few have an unexpected edge; but a thought-provoking one. If C. S. Lewis' more mature work is on your list of approved reading, this should be on it, too. Little Daylight, Cross Purposes, and The Light Princess are in various volumes because they are some of the best.
A Wrinkle in TimeA Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.50
A Wrinkle in Time melds fantasy, science-fiction, and theology in a way much like C. S. Lewis' Space Trilogy, with the advantage of being written less densely. It is no less profound. The whole series, and most of L'Engle's work, have Christian thinking and interesting speculation. Though you may not agree with her perspective, her questions are excellent ones to think through.
Un Lun DunUn Lun Dun by China Mieville
Buy new: $9.00 / Used from: $3.00
This is like Alice in Wonderland or The Phantom Tollbooth, only focusing more on deconstructing fantasy cliches. Cute elements and interesting ideas, though.
Redwall (Redwall, Book 1)Redwall (Redwall, Book 1) by Brian Jacques
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
Food, missional orders, and battle cries! The rather colorfully portrayed war threading through these books is detailed as much as the feasts and characters' personalities. Fighting for the right, a belief in justice, and a very low key spiritual element make these popular. One of very few well-written (especially in terms of vocabulary) books boys can get into easily.
The AnybodiesThe Anybodies by N. E. Bode
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01
An adventure in various what-ifs that makes constant references to other well-known stories (rather like a treasure hunt). There is a real-family element of this story that instead of breezing along explores the displacement of belonging with a person by nature but being attached to people you don't.
