The Count of Monte Cristo (Oxford World's Classics)The Count of Monte Cristo (Oxford World's Classics) by Alexandre Dumas
Buy new: $9.86 / Used from: $5.82
One of the most satisfying novels ever. The ultimate prison break becomes the ultimate revenge story and then transforms itself into something even more remarkable. Will I read another book this good in 2009: wait and hope.
Things Fall ApartThings Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe
Buy used from: $1.96
Classic as truly African literature. Classic in a Greek tragedy sense. Classic as a fascinating look into another culture. Classic and yet still accessible.
A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian TrailA Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail by Bill Bryson
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.83
I daresay I would give this book a merry toot on a party paper streamer for this book. A wonderful amble through nature, discovery, trivia and eccentricity of human personality. Bill Bryson is an author I will have to revisit in 2010, and I would happily revisit this trail in a few years.
Sophia House (Children of the Last Days)Sophia House (Children of the Last Days) by Michael D. O'Brien
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $5.80
"But who will ransom me?" O'Brien truly makes me grow as a reader. "Had not every father once been a child, each suffering in turn those blows and absences that chain souls?" The way he layers his protagonist-who climbs down into wells to kill a beast with his grandfather as a child and sees the Madonna in a traincar as an adult- and the manner in which he addresses his struggle is remarkable.
Comfort: A Journey Through GriefComfort: A Journey Through Grief by Ann Hood
Buy new: $7.75 / Used from: $4.85
Achingly well-written. Hood elegantly puts words to the unexplainable. In her sparsity you can see, feel exactly what she describes. I think sorrow and hope are two or the most powerful connectors of the human experience.
The Last LectureThe Last Lecture by Randy Pausch
Buy new: $14.27 / Used from: $3.28
The subject matter could have instigated pity and depression. But instead it fills you with hope, makes you take a moment to consider your blessings and reevaluate how you are living out your dreams.
Road Map to Holland: How I Found My Way Through My Son's First Two Years With Down SyndromeRoad Map to Holland: How I Found My Way Through My Son's First Two Years With Down Syndrome by Jennifer Graf Groneberg
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $0.01
This could be the most startlingly honest account of parenthood I've ever read. And it makes the work as a whole all the more beautiful. "He's the child that I wanted, that I did not know I wanted." A wonder to watch it gently unfold in surprisingly pro-life ways. p. 233-237 are especially resplendent. Mrs. Gronenberg is a gifted writer.
Render Unto Caesar: Serving the Nation by Living our Catholic Beliefs in Political LifeRender Unto Caesar: Serving the Nation by Living our Catholic Beliefs in Political Life by Charles J. Chaput
Buy new: $14.93 / Used from: $4.42
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Chaput is coo. This is the type of book that while not a page turner, you just feel your brain expanding every time you read it. So many excellent points.
Abortion and the Conscience of the Nation (New edition/issue)Abortion and the Conscience of the Nation (New edition/issue) by Ronald Reagan
Buy used from: $30.00
This work made me rethink my perceptions of Reagan. Very well-written.
Maus I: A Survivor's Tale: My Father Bleeds HistoryMaus I: A Survivor's Tale: My Father Bleeds History by Art Spiegelman
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $4.97
An entirely bold and different look at a tragedy: surviving the survivors. Maus is a jarringly honest account of a son's disjointed relationship with his father as he tries to preserve the history of a shadow he grew up in.
The Sea of Monsters (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 2)The Sea of Monsters (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 2) by Rick Riordan
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.50
The pacing of this book is a little slower, but in other ways, I feel it improved on the first in the series. The characters become more fleshed out, and the attention is more on the heroes (who act even more heroically) and the mythological monsters than on the selfish and confusing gods.
The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 1)The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 1) by Rick Riordan
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.74
A very interesting concept for a book, modern day meets mythology and I am excited to see how my students react to it. Battling monsters keeps the pace going, but is descending to the Underworld a little too much for young readers? I don't mind the selfishness of the gods, but I wish Riordan would take more care to keep his heroes heroic.
RulesRules by Cynthia Lord
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.98
Well, in this case you can judge a book by the cover. Inventive and fresh, a wonderful look at disabilities and the heart that beats within. Definitely going to read aloud.
Yellow StarYellow Star by Jennifer Roy
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $7.44
Simplistic, somber, spare verse conveys much more than narrative could. My favorite moment is when the adults all circle around to protect the children.
Love and Logic Magic for Early Childhood: Practical Parenting from Birth to Six YearsLove and Logic Magic for Early Childhood: Practical Parenting from Birth to Six Years by Jim Fay
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $14.97
Good stuff. Thank you, book.
A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy SoldierA Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah
Buy new: $8.64 / Used from: $2.94
After Burroughs and Frey, it is sad that I approached some of Beah's unprovable claims with skepticism. Still, his life of refugee, soldier and recovering makes 3 very interesting chapters. "Afraid that nightfall would turn over the uncertain pages of our lives." We have no idea how lucky we are in the U.S.
The Last Word and Other Stories (Classic, 20th-Century, Penguin)The Last Word and Other Stories (Classic, 20th-Century, Penguin) by Graham Greene
Buy new: $13.00 / Used from: $2.35
A very enjoyable, quick-to-read collection. Helped jump my reading battery. My favorites are the title story about the last Pope, a husband's message to his wife in "The News in English" and the well stylized "Murder for the Wrong Reason"
The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four MealsThe Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals by Michael Pollan
Buy new: $9.12 / Used from: $6.95
Man, it feels so good just to _finish_ a book. The work as a whole was not quite as satisfying as individual parts. Made me want to build a chicken coop and hunt for mushrooms though.
How to Win Friends and Influence PeopleHow to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie
Buy used from: $6.99
There is a good reason this book is still read. Very useful. Lots of great key points.
Diary of a Wimpy KidDiary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney
Buy new: $7.77 / Used from: $4.33
Is this a work of sheer genius or another example of the dumbing down of children's literature? Possibly both? Whatever it is, it is hilarious, though I worry about kids reading this without guidance. The morals are nuanced enough that I think some kids would be just as oblivious as Greg in how his selfish actions impact others.
The Donut Chef (A Golden Classic)The Donut Chef (A Golden Classic) by Bob Staake
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $6.94
Co-Winner of the 2009 Infinity Award. I think this book has Seuss-like potential.
The Unthinkable: Who Survives When Disaster Strikes - and WhyThe Unthinkable: Who Survives When Disaster Strikes - and Why by Amanda Ripley
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $8.82
Ms. Ripley studiously gathers supporting data, combining real-life drama with the inner workings of your brain. All the psychology and talk of brain evolution gets weary. But the stories of 9/11, the Beverly Hills Supper Fire, stampedes at hajj, and the 1982 Flight 90 crash into the Potomac are so memorable, this book is worth it.
Bottlemania: How Water Went on Sale and Why We Bought ItBottlemania: How Water Went on Sale and Why We Bought It by Elizabeth Royte
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $2.95
After reading about atrazine, phthalates, BPA and a hundred other lurking evils, I just want to give up drinking water. An interesting, informative read. I understand the Fryeburg is a microcosm of the whole situation, but it is also boring-every time the book returned to this small town, I lost interest.
The Courage To Be Catholic: Crisis, Reform And The Future Of The ChurchThe Courage To Be Catholic: Crisis, Reform And The Future Of The Church by George Weigel
Buy new: $12.44 / Used from: $0.01
The problem is that I just expect so much from Mr. Weigel. This started off as a decisive look at our Church, but unravelled into a series of admonishments that began to seem harsh and didactic. "This must cease." There was some interesting info about Vatican II aftermath that made me appreciate where our Church is today.
Wabi SabiWabi Sabi by Mark Reibstein
Buy new: $11.55 / Used from: $7.42
I am shocked the Caldecott committee left this book emptyhanded. Good use of haiku poetry.
Friday My Radio Flyer FlewFriday My Radio Flyer Flew by Zachary Pullen
Buy new: $13.25 / Used from: $1.96
I am a sucker for father-son stories, and this one, where a father literally helps his son's dreams take off, is a winner.
The House in the NightThe House in the Night by Susan Marie Swanson
Buy new: $11.05 / Used from: $7.07
A very deserving Caldecott recipient. The artwork is stunning and the story is reminiscent of Goodbye Moon in its simple structure.
The Hunger GamesThe Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Buy new: $10.52 / Used from: $10.25
Normally, when a book is so compelling it makes me read 350 pages in one day, staying up til 3 in the morning to finish it, it gets an enthusiastic review from me. But this book is aimed at teens, and has enough gray area to make me question it, including a mercy killing and more than one scene with nudity.
DC: The New Frontier, Vol. 2DC: The New Frontier, Vol. 2 by Darwyn Cooke
Buy new: $13.59 / Used from: $9.87
Very good conclusion and deserves praise for how it takes the words of Kennedy's awesome speech and makes it even more power-filled by pairing them with images.
DC: The New Frontier, Vol. 1DC: The New Frontier, Vol. 1 by Darwyn Cooke
Buy new: $13.59 / Used from: $8.99
When I finished this one, I thought it was just a mediocre collection of your typical comic-fare. But it was all building up to something...
Big Bad BunnyBig Bad Bunny by Franny Billingsley
Buy new: $11.55 / Used from: $0.21
A very fun read-aloud for your young ones. Nothing can stop a mother's love.
The Zoo I DrewThe Zoo I Drew by Todd H. Doodler
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $2.92
The most Caldecott potential I've seen in 09 so far. I love the outside of this book a little more than the inside though (the rhymes could have been done by my mom). Still very fun style.
My Brother Sam Is Dead (Apple Signature)My Brother Sam Is Dead (Apple Signature) by James Lincoln Collier
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.49
I am willing to try this book out this year, but it's themes are almost too deep for a 5th grade class. A little too heavily influenced by the Vietnam War. I didn't like the language or the disobedience of Tim. Still, it should be an ineteresting book for discussion and certainly presents war in an honest, inglorious light.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last StrawDiary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw by Jeff Kinney
Buy new: $5.00 / Used from: $4.24
The funny comes back with a return to (relative) innocence. That Rodrick was such a bad influence. And don't even get me started on his little brother...
Eat, Pray, LoveEat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
Buy used from: $22.19
There is a lot of annoying stuff about this book-"new age, moral relativism hooey" if you will. Still, let's focus on the good: Gilbert's writing voice, Italy's luscious food and language, realization about the role we fill in India and a selfless gift in Indonesia.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick RulesDiary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules by Jeff Kinney
Buy new: $4.75 / Used from: $3.78
I thought this one was a little more cruel and more of a bad influence than the first. I think parents and teachers should definitely discuss these with their kids while reading them.
Maus II: A Survivor's Tale: And Here My Troubles BeganMaus II: A Survivor's Tale: And Here My Troubles Began by Art Spiegelman
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $6.24
At first I thought the exploration of the author's guilt and difficulty with wrestling with such a daunting task would provide another dimension that would propel this work beyond its predecessor. But the abrupt conclusion feels like the weight of the project was just too much and in the end, he just wanted it done and over with.
Stolen ChildrenStolen Children by Peg Kehret
Buy new: $11.55 / Used from: $8.49
A tad melodramatic at times, but I like how Kehret puts the attention on the people that could have helped but chose not to.
Never Take a Shark to the Dentist: and Other Things Not to DoNever Take a Shark to the Dentist: and Other Things Not to Do by Judi Barrett
Buy new: $12.23 / Used from: $5.00
Co-winner of the 2009 Infinity award.
The Longest Trip Home: A MemoirThe Longest Trip Home: A Memoir by John Grogan
Buy new: $18.68 / Used from: $0.12
I can not think of a book that I was so let down by. If I can persuade just one person not to waste their time on this shallow, immature, self-indulgent memoir, then I have made a difference in this world.
