Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in SpaceLadies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space by Spiritualized

Ah, the J Spaceman magnum opus. This is a masterpiece of beautiful sounds. It hurts so good, but the pain is so real. Every single track is a winner. The best break-up album ever made.
Bach: The 6 Cello SuitesBach: The 6 Cello Suites
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $6.85
For something a bit more life-affirming, we have Bach at his most sublime. Nothing beats the very first prelude for sheer brilliance. If you feel the need to take a darker path, check out the prelude from the 5th--plumb the depths of that hurt! Really, just buy this CD; it will touch you somewhere deep no matter your mood. A top 3 dessert island pick.
DopesickDopesick by Eyehategod

Goddamn. The biggest heavy metal explosion this side of the big bang. Completely garbled lyrics reveal nothing beyond extreme duress. The rest is just thick slabs of obliteration and loathing through monster riffage. This the one to listen to before you make bad decisions.
Sea ChangeSea Change by Beck
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $3.88
Depressing all around, but with that drazed-out atmospheric longing that makes your heart soften a bit.
The Covers RecordThe Covers Record by Cat Power
Buy new: $11.38 / Used from: $14.92
The spare arrangements and Chan Marshall's hoarse, vulnerable intoning give this album a very melancholy feel. Check out Kingsport Town and Sea of Love for the two sides of your pain.
The EssentialThe Essential by Little Walter
Buy used from: $37.44
Little Walter was a train wreck for a long time. The man lived the blues like few others and the mouth harp just lends itself to heartbreak, especially in his masterful hands . Listen to Blue and Lonesome #16 from the second disc to let his pain wash over you. The alternate take of Blue Midnight (#4 disc 1) is an instrumental gem as well.
( )( ) by Sigur Rós
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $4.54
The best Sigur Ros album ever; so good it doesn't even need a name. Everybody brings their own pain to this achingly beautiful record of sorrows sung in a made-up language by a guy that really likes to make people cry. Number 5 will be the wrench torquing your despairing heart. God, did I just write that. Essential.
Debussy: Préludes for Piano, Books 1 & 2Debussy: Préludes for Piano, Books 1 & 2
Buy used from: $39.99
There is plenty on this disc that is cheerful and whimsical, but many of the pieces have a barren, cold atmosphere to them--adrift. I love them all, but # 6 'Des pas sur la neige' (Footprints in the snow) is just a killer. The moodiness is incredible on this piece. # 10 'La cathedrale engloutie' is also a real winner.
