![]() | Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 1 / Songs of a Wayfarer - Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau / Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra / Rafael Kubelik
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $6.38 Kubelik's is the greatest recording of the First Symphony, period. However the sound quality can't match up to the second best recording of it, which I list below.

![]() | Mahler: Symphony No. 1
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $3.99 Bernstein's is a fine reading. Maybe the best of both worlds (interpretation and sound quality). The first movement is especially good!
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No. 2 / Mehta, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra by Gustav Mahler
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $7.23 Mehta's recording is legendary and for good reason. The tempos are brisk for the most part and the recording (though more than 30 years old) is exceptional. There is more excitement in this version than any other I know. Ludwig's vocal on Ulricht is my favorite recorded version.
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No. 2 "Resurrection"
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $4.81 It is possible that Gilbert Kaplan may know this symphony inside out over any other person alive. His second go at it is phenomenally recorded and exceptionally conducted. Maybe the best Mahler recording ever made from an engineer's perspective. The tempos are slower in some spots than Mehta's with the same orchestra, but the excitement is comparable.
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No. 3 In D Minor - Horenstein
Buy used from: $37.98 Horenstein's 3rd is one of the most talked about Mahler recordings. Certainly it is the most revered 3rd ever recorded. The reason is that it holds together extremely well. In a 100 minute symphony that aspect is especially important. I have to comment that for me the sound quality is below standard. Check out the Chailly for an equally great alternative in amazing sound quality.
![]() | Mahler 3: Bach Suite
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $12.99 Chailly's is my personal favorite 3rd. It is explosive in the first movement, like I've never heard elsewhere. Well sung, exceptionally recorded with a wonderful orchestra. The last movement is particularly well executed. While the Horenstein is marginally more cohesive, I may choose this one if I were only able to afford one.
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No.4; Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen by Gustav Mahler
Buy new: $6.98 / Used from: $5.99 Like the Horenstein 3rd, Szell's 4th has been called definitive over all other recordings of the work. I absolutely agree. The Clevelanders play with the right amount of grace and enthusiasm. The tempos are perfect. The sound quality is better than most digital recordings, with very little analog hiss, well defined bass, and present but non-abrasive highs.
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No. 4 [Hybrid SACD]
Buy new: $27.98 / Used from: $13.59 To hear the sheer joy of the 4th, I recommend Tilson Thomas's recording. It may be slightly below the Szell recording with regard to overall reading, but somehow it exudes more joy in the outer two movements (at least to my ears). This is also very finely recorded!
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No. 5
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $5.99 Barbirolli's 5th is a very famous recording. I have to admit, it took a while for me to get used to the slower tempi. But there are revelations within that are hard to hear in other recordings.
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No. 5
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $7.98 Barenboim's is an exceptional and lesser known reading. There is so much bang in the orchestra here. And a very sensitive adagietto, taken at an apropriate tempo. The recording quality is very very good, though slightly compressed so that the quiet sections are a bit louder than normal.
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No. 6 / Rückert Lieder / Kindertotenlieder
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $12.59 Mahler and Karajan are an interesting pair. I've heard Karajan referred to as the greatest of all R. Strauss conductors, but never the same about his Mahler because he came to Mahler so late in life, and recorded very few of his works. However, the symphonies which he managed to get down on tape are amongst the best ever recorded. This 6th is easily the best currently available.
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No. 6 in A minor
Buy new: $24.98 / Used from: $16.99 I want to start this review by saying my favorite digital recording (my favorite of digital and analog actually) of this work is Thomas Sanderling's but that is not available. If you can find it, buy it! Fischer's is a great alternative. Fine audio quality, though I would have preferred the scherzo placed second rather than third.
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No. 7
Buy new: $7.98 / Used from: $6.98 It's really a shame that this is Mahler's least known symphony since it is one of his best. Bernstein's recording is the one which all others have been compared to since it's release.
![]() | Mahler: Symphony 7 In E Minor
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $14.99 Gielen's cycle has been cited as the most consistent in recent years. His 7th may very well be the best ever recorded. Because the various changes in mood can plague other interpretations, it takes a very "consistent" conductor to keep the work from sounding erratic. It also takes a very sensitive conductor to keep the work emotionally viable. Gielen gets the best of both worlds.
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No. 8
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $5.95 This is the most recent edition of this super famous recording. Solti's is the most discussed Mahler 8 ever recorded. The soloists are very good. The conducting is superb. The sonics could be better, but it is close to excellent.
![]() | Mahler: Symphonie No. 8
Buy used from: $5.49 I prefer Abbado's 8th to the Solti. I think its "live" qualities are aparrent and make for a better view of this very lively work. The soloists are also very good. And the sonics are superior. This symphony is one of Mahler's most difficult to grasp on first listen.
![]() | Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.50 This makes it to my top 3 Mahler recordings. Wunderlich is beyond compare. Ludwig can only be matched by a select few, but not surpassed. Klemperer has the GREATEST understanding of this work of all conductors I know. And very strangely, the sound quality of this old recording, far exceeds any other recording I've ever heard of the work.
![]() | Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde - Violeta Urmana / Michael Schade / Wiener Philharmoniker / Pierre Boulez
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $5.84 For an alternative and interesting view of the work, I recommend the Boulez. It in no way compares with Klemperer's so if you are only getting one, please skip this. There are nuances you can hear in this interpretation which are less audible in others, and the singing is very good. Remarkably, the sound quality does not compare with Klemperer's.
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No. 9/ Wunderhorn-Lieder
Buy used from: $15.00 Haitink's Mahler 9 was declared upon its release by distinguished Mahler critic, Deryck Cooke, to be the greatest ever recorded, beyond criticism. There is no doubt that this recording is among the finest ever recorded of this work. Though there is a slight hiss, the sound quality is excellent.
![]() | Gustav Mahler: Symphonie No. 9
Buy new: $33.98 / Used from: $19.99 Today, Karajan's second recording of the 9th is the most distinguished recording of this work (the greatest symphony ever written)...The Haitink equally matches it, but the sonics are marginally better here. I recommend you buy both if you can.
![]() | Mahler: Symphony No. 10 [Performing Version by Deryck Cooke]
Buy new: $7.98 / Used from: $6.90 Deryck Cooke, the great Mahlerian I mentioned above who cited Haitink's 9th as the greatest ever recorded, finished Mahler's unfinished 10th Symphony. Ormandy's was its debut recording. And today remains one of the finest!
![]() | Mahler - Symphony 10 / Berliner Philharmoniker · Rattle by Gustav Mahler
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $4.87 For some of you the absence of Simon Rattle up to this point may seem a bit odd, as he is considered in some quarters (especially in his native England) to be the greatest Mahlerian alive. I happen to dislike much of his Mahler, but his 10th is fantastic! I recommend this recording for those wish to hear the 10th as completed by Deryck Cooke.
