![]() | The Scottish Chiefs; or, The Life of Sir William Wallace by Jane Porter
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $17.95 I first read this historic romance in Honors Literature I. It was a challenging read for a 10th grader. However, I really liked the chivalry, concepts of honor and valor, and twists in plot. Certainly, this is not a novel for anyone. Yet, reading and understanding novels like Jane Porter's really helped me prepare for the CR section of the SAT.

![]() | Oliver Twist (Barnes & Noble Classics Series) (B&N Classics) by Charles Dickens
Buy new: $4.95 / Used from: $0.01 The classic tale of the boy who asked, "Please sir, I want some more?" Oliver Twist has become one of the most well-recognized British Victorian novels. The novel is not without faults, especially Dickens referring to Fagin as "the Jew." However, the morals and themes of this work are touching. Oliver never compromises his values, forgives his enemies, and brings joy to peoples' lives.

If not read in MS, it makes a good HS read for all students.

![]() | Jane Eyre (Barnes & Noble Classics Series) (B&N Classics) by Charlotte Bronte
Buy new: $4.95 / Used from: $0.01 I enjoyed Bronte's style of writing, the plot, and the themes. Jane struggles throughout the novel to follow her conviction again outside pressures. Meanwhile, she faces the strick Victorian standard of morality, which keeps her from showing the love she truly has for Edward Rochester, a man she considers her equal. Yet, the plot thickens because Rochester has a secret of his own to reveal...

For any HS student studying the Russian Revolution and the subsequent Stalinist era, read it!

![]() | The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux
Buy new: $21.56 / Used from: $16.99 This novel is written at a high level of competency. After reading the novel, it would be interesting to have students write a comparative paper between the novel and a film version. "The Phantom of the Opera" is one novel where the film adaptations often leave out or change parts from Leroux's novel. Students who love French history or literture may find the novel even more enjoyable.

Reading about the Scowlers and their crime in America was interesting, as was how that relates to Sherlock Holmes and his latest murder case in England many years later.
