Docks of New York (1928) (Silent) [VHS]Docks of New York (1928) (Silent) [VHS]
Buy used from: $15.95
Slow-moving and thoughtful, it's the story of grimy New York dock workers, and the on-and-off love affair of one couple. Laced with heavy cigarette smoke, the camera dollies in out of dingy bars and dark waterfronts. Several scenes are still considered near classic for their moody ambience. Betty Compson gets the full Sternberg treatment two years before Dietrich did.

She Done Him Wrong (Universal Cinema Classics)She Done Him Wrong (Universal Cinema Classics)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $7.64
In 1933, West plays Lady Lou, a saloon singer who wears low cut, form-fitting gowns and drips with glittering diamonds. She's a gold-digger with a shady past and a heart of gold. Mae was almost 40 when she made this film and it's apparent in several of her scenes. But despite all of her physical shortcomings, it's all in her mannerisms, her "purr" and her stroll
Bitter Tea of General Yen [VHS]Bitter Tea of General Yen [VHS]
Buy used from: $7.00
Barbara Stanwyck was queen of the pre-codes. A rebel Chinese (Nils Asther) takes in a Catholic woman (Barbara Stanwyck) during a panic in the Chinese Civil War. She is presumed dead by her family and the general will not let her escape. She strangely falls in love with him, but the two are very different people. Interracial love stories were taboo after the code went into effect.
Illicit [VHS]Illicit [VHS]
Buy used from: $24.84
Stanwyck plays Anne Vincent, who disbelieves in the structure of marriage. Notwithstanding Dick's proposals, the most she'll give him is the occasional fornicatory weekend in the country. Only after the local society gossips start buzzing does Anne finally agree to marry Dick. Predictably, things go sour almost immediately after the honeymoon as boredom sets in & petty jealousies flare.
The Marx Brothers Silver Screen Collection (The Cocoanuts / Animal Crackers / Monkey Business / Horse Feathers / Duck Soup)The Marx Brothers Silver Screen Collection (The Cocoanuts / Animal Crackers / Monkey Business / Horse Feathers / Duck Soup)
Buy new: $42.99 / Used from: $36.55
While the Marx Brothers may have enjoyed their greatest commercial successes at MGM, their first films for Paramount offer the purest essence of their genius, undiluted; irreverence, bawdiness, spontaneity, and an 'outside the box' approach to society only possible during the pre-Code years.
The Busby Berkeley Collection (Footlight Parade / Gold Diggers of 1933 / Dames / Gold Diggers of 1935 / 42nd Street)The Busby Berkeley Collection (Footlight Parade / Gold Diggers of 1933 / Dames / Gold Diggers of 1935 / 42nd Street)
Buy new: $29.49 / Used from: $28.79
Berkeley was one of the most visually inventive director-choreographers in the history of film. Footlight Parade, Gold Diggers of 1933, and 42nd Street are good examples of pre-code humor thrown into the mix. However, the entire collection is excellent.
Astaire & Rogers Ultimate Collector's Edition (Flying Down to Rio / The Gay Divorcee / Roberta / Top Hat / Follow the Fleet / Swing Time / Shall We Dance / Carefree / The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle / The Barkleys of Broadway)Astaire & Rogers Ultimate Collector's Edition (Flying Down to Rio / The Gay Divorcee / Roberta / Top Hat / Follow the Fleet / Swing Time / Shall We Dance / Carefree / The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle / The Barkleys of Broadway)
Buy new: $87.99 / Used from: $71.99
"Flying Down to Rio" has many loveable qualities of Pre-Code movies. Racy songs & racier dance numbers, gratuitous dressing scenes, and double-entendre dialogue. Franklin Pangbourne gets plenty of screen-time for a lengthy "sissy" portrayal impossible in the code era. Stereotyped portrayals of blacks and Latinos are tossed - the code era saw all racial stereotypes strictly adhered to.
Madam Satan [VHS]Madam Satan [VHS]
Buy used from: $21.80
This bizarre hodgepodge directed by Cecil B. DeMille has to been seen to be believed. A woman diguises herself as an exotic seductress in order to win her roving husband back. The story takes place during an extravagant costume ball aboard a dirigible. There are lots of songs and dances in the dirigible scenes. Lillian Roth is memorable as the energetic, buxom and dimpled showgirl Trixie.
Blessed Event [VHS]Blessed Event [VHS]
Buy used from: $10.00
This pre-code film about a scandal sheet writer utilizes many things seen as obscene or offensive in later years. There is more swearing than one might expect, gang violence, and talk of women who are to have children or "blessed events" conceived before marriage.
All Quiet on the Western Front (Universal Cinema Classics)All Quiet on the Western Front (Universal Cinema Classics)
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $5.50
Exploiting the comparative freedom of expression in the pre-Code era, this film shoots down the transcendence of storybook battle with the flatulence of ground-level reality. The raw recruits are beset by hunger, rats, lice, and loss of sphincter control as they string concertina wire, endure endless artillery bombardments, march into machine guns, and confront the horror of killing up close.
Gabriel Over the White House [VHS]Gabriel Over the White House [VHS]

I Am a Fugitive From a Chain GangI Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang
Buy used from: $5.97
This film is as fresh and powerful today as it was in 1932, thanks in part to the pre-Hay's office frankness of its subject matter. It is a film about the role destiny and fate play in our lives. You will never look at the life you have in the same way after seeing this film. The film was banned in Georgia because it so closely tracked a true story involving their chain gangs and prison system.
Big House [VHS]Big House [VHS]
Buy used from: $9.99
Another pre-code film featuring a grim look at the harsh reality of prison conditions in the Depression era. Strong performances from everyone involved.
Ladies They Talk About [VHS]Ladies They Talk About [VHS]
Buy used from: $21.99
And now for women in prison. Shows an honest and unsensational version of love and revenge. The prison system is revealed in all its greyness, not just black and white. Prostitution, lesbian characters and mental illness are presented in the story however tame they might appear by today's standards. Stanwyck had one of her best early roles playing the vengeful, tough and yet vulnerable Nan.
Scarface (Universal Cinema Classics)Scarface (Universal Cinema Classics)
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $6.13
Produced by Howard Hughes. First film to present the gangster as a senseless, moronic, cold-blooded lunatic. Paul Muni plays Tony Camonte (obviously based on Al Capone). It also happens that he's in love with his sister, which just adds to his perversity. Muni is excellent, parading around like some Neanderthal Man, and blasting a machine gun is almost like sex to him - only better.

Buy used from: $28.97

Blonde Crazy [VHS]Blonde Crazy [VHS]
Buy used from: $36.46
James Cagney & Joan Blondell were in seven films together, including their first. This 1931 movie is probably the best of those seven. They are two hotel employees that hit the road in search of deep pockets to fleece.
Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde Double Feature (1932/1941)Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde Double Feature (1932/1941)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $4.92
Rather faithful to Stevenson's story, the atmosphere of 1800's London is thick with Victorian attitudes on one end and soaked with sex and sin on the other. It is between these two worlds that Dr. Henry Jekyll finds himself torn after experimenting with personality-altering drugs that bring out the bestial Mr.Hyde. Hyde seeks out the lustful Ivy and takes her forcibly as his mistress.

Buy new: $28.49 / Used from: $30.00
This collection has four good examples of pre-code crime dramas - "Smart Money", "Picture Snatcher", "The Mayor of Hell", and "Lady Killer". The other two films were made after the code. All feature the talents of Cagney, Bogart, and Robinson.
Universal's Classic Monster Collection (Dracula/Frankenstein/The Mummy/The Invisible Man/The Bride of Frankenstein/The Wolf Man/The Phantom of the Opera/The Creature from the Black Lagoon)Universal's Classic Monster Collection (Dracula/Frankenstein/The Mummy/The Invisible Man/The Bride of Frankenstein/The Wolf Man/The Phantom of the Opera/The Creature from the Black Lagoon)
Buy used from: $200.00
Universal embodied the best pre-code horror that included the existential doubts of Frankenstein, the implied fornication and polygamy of Dracula, and eternal life from an evil pagan source in The Mummy. The rest of the movies are Code-era, but still very good. Unfortunately, the set is a bit pricey.
FreaksFreaks
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $5.66
On one level, FREAKS isn't a very good movie. Some of the acting is terribly wooden, and considering the film's short running time of 62 minutes it's obvious that MGM quickly decided that this was a b-picture. On another level, because it so humanizes those we usually avoid, and because it does so without resorting to optical tricks, FREAKS is a movie like no other, before or since.
Island of Lost Souls [VHS]Island of Lost Souls [VHS]
Buy used from: $8.49
Charles Laughton is Doctor Moreau, conducting a series of `experiments' and hiding a sinister plan of making the first human-animal in the world behind his gentlemanly face. But the real treasure of the film is Kathleen Burk as The Panther Woman, who is alarmingly sexy even by today's standards. Bella Lugosi also appears as `Sayer of the Law' with heavy make-up.
Hollywood's Legends of Horror Collection (Doctor X / The Return of Doctor X / Mad Love / The Devil Doll / Mark of the Vampire / The Mask of Fu Manchu)Hollywood's Legends of Horror Collection (Doctor X / The Return of Doctor X / Mad Love / The Devil Doll / Mark of the Vampire / The Mask of Fu Manchu)
Buy new: $29.99 / Used from: $22.94
While not in the same league as other classic horror films from this era, "Doctor X" comes close. If you read about this film, it's startling - rape, murder, dissection, AND cannibalism! A wise cracking reporter on the trail of a derranged supernatural killer? Could it be this film was an influence on both The Night Stalker, & The X-Files? The other films in this set are good, but not pre-code.
Dinner at EightDinner at Eight
Buy new: $18.49 / Used from: $4.90
A product of its times - the Great Depression, replete with financial empires on the brink, aging theater stars, gold-digging vixens, and wealthy patricians seemingly immune to the tremendous suffering all around them. The terrific cast are a great ensemble, but the character who really steals their thunder is Kitty, played by a delightfully brassy Jean Harlow.
The Thin Man (Keepcase)The Thin Man (Keepcase)
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $3.09
Straddles the code/pre-code eras. Nick & Nora only talk like libertines, they are actually a devoted couple. However, there are all kinds of pre-code activities going on in the supporting cast. However, Nick & Nora do drink like fish, even treating hangovers with martinis.
Trouble in Paradise - Criterion CollectionTrouble in Paradise - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $32.49 / Used from: $21.92
Trouble in Paradise is a great example of a sophisticated pre-code about 2 thieves played by Herbert Marshall (Gaston) & Miriam Hopkins (Lily). Gaston manages to steal a wealthy woman's purse (Kay Francis) and when she offers a reward for its return, he goes to her & manages to get a job managing her finances. This is the perfect setup, but then he begins to fall in love with his benefactor.

Buy new: $28.99 / Used from: $43.00
The first 2 films deliver in action, excitement and romance on a grand level with Maureen O'Sullivan looking absolutely sexy in her abbreviated costume as Jane. Unfortunately, the Hays Office forced all subsequent Weismuller-O'Sullivan Tarzan films to be toned down in the romance department with O'Sullivan getting a more conservative wardrobe and the series was never this good again.
King Kong (Two-Disc Special Edition)King Kong (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $26.98 / Used from: $3.99
Forbidden love between beauty and beast is the subject of this pre-code classic. The theme is done many times in the code era, but not with the visual forcefulness of this film.

Dennis Carson (Gable) runs a Southeast Asian rubber plantation. Vantine, a "woman of easy virtue" (Harlow), drifts into camp looking for a place to evade the law. The Cecil B. DeMille Collection (Cleopatra/ The Crusades/ Four Frightened People/ Sign of the Cross/ Union Pacific)The Cecil B. DeMille Collection (Cleopatra/ The Crusades/ Four Frightened People/ Sign of the Cross/ Union Pacific)
Buy new: $48.49 / Used from: $24.99
Not a good tribute to DeMille, but it has a couple of good pre-code examples, most notably the notorious "Sign of the Cross" which is basically a pre-code "Quo Vadis". All the debauchery of ancient Rome is in this one. Another pre-code included is "Four Frightened People" where a jungle setting brings out the jungle in the people. "Cleopatra" basically straddles the code and pre-code eras.
