Connemara (Cois Fharraige), Connacht/ Western dialect. See my review at the site for details. Tapes/ CDs sold separately. Overly academic, grammatically thorough. Better for linguists rather than casual learners.

All three dialects: Donegal/ Northern, Connacht/ Western & Cork- Kerry Southern. See my review at the site for details. Textbook to accompany TV series on Irish TV. Less easy to use, far pricier than "Speaking Irish."

Buy new: $17.12 / Used from: $27.55
Southern or Munster dialect, but Standard Irish emphasis. See my review at the site for details. Brief history, proverbs, readings, quirky dialogues, grammar, and glossary. Teach Yourself Irish Grammar (TY: Language Guides)Teach Yourself Irish Grammar (TY: Language Guides) by Eamonn O'Donaill
Buy new: $11.21 / Used from: $4.45
See my review at site for details. Excellent, but paperback spine cracks easily. Not to be confused with inferior "Teach Yourself Irish" book- tape series. Buy along with "Irish Grammar Book" by Noel McGonagle (Cló Iar-Chonnachta) and "A Learner's Guide to Irish" by Donna Wong (Cois Life, Dublin).
Irish Grammar: A Basic HandbookIrish Grammar: A Basic Handbook by Noel McGonagle
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $5.24
See my review at site for details. Not to be confused with author's Cló Iar-Chonnachta grammar below, which is a more detailed version of this Hippocrene primer. Very basic, has been criticized by some scholars. But, affordable reference for quick consultation.
Irish Grammar BookIrish Grammar Book by Nollaig MacCongail
Buy used from: $75.73
A more detailed version of the McGonagle (same surname but anglicized-- see, you're learning Irish) grammar reference above. Good on prepositions and numbers--two areas that can perplex learners. Translation of an Irish-language resource.
Focloir Poca English - Irish / Irish - English Dictionary - Gaeilge / Bearla (English and Irish Edition)Focloir Poca English - Irish / Irish - English Dictionary - Gaeilge / Bearla (English and Irish Edition)
Buy new: $39.95 / Used from: $106.13

Focloir Gaeilge-Bearla/Irish-English DictionaryFocloir Gaeilge-Bearla/Irish-English Dictionary by Niall O'Donaill
Buy used from: $38.50
Get the unabridged version. Splurge for the hardcover if you can. Many examples (25% more also appear in the on-line version recently published) of usage, and crucially, dialectical distinctions and alternate spellings. Get mini-version, "Foclóir Poca," for travel.
English-Irish Dictionary With Terminological Additions and CorrectionsEnglish-Irish Dictionary With Terminological Additions and Corrections by Tomas De Bhaldraithe
Buy used from: $25.99
You will need this and Ó Dónaill. The only "reverse" dictionary. If you can afford the hardcover, invest in it; paperbacks for both dictionaries will not withstand the demands of the diligent student of Irish.
English-Irish DictionaryEnglish-Irish Dictionary by Patrick S. Dinneen
Buy used from: $12.95
The older dictionary used before the 1950s Roman alphabet. Gaelic font. A lexicographer's eccentric triumph. Beloved for its "Dinneenisms" (see Rosenstock's "Beginner's Irish" reviewed by me on this list and at the Amazon site). Not your primary source, but valuable for its folkloric as well as linguistic value.
Oxford Pocket Irish DictionaryOxford Pocket Irish Dictionary
Buy used from: $9.23
Hard to find. Useful, handsome typeface and layout in the Oxford tradition. Often out of print. Less popular than "Foclóir Poca" or the Collins Gem.
Collins Gem Irish Dictionary, 2eCollins Gem Irish Dictionary, 2e by Collins
Buy new: $7.95 / Used from: $2.80
Newer printing adds subtle color. Collins also publishes a School Dictionary with a few appended games and puzzles. Competes with "Foclóir Poca." Advantages: flexible waterproofed cover, preposition and irregular verb lists, small size, durability. Disadvantages: small print, fewer idioms, and no IPA pronunciation entries. Yet, affordable, tough, and compact.
Learner's Irish-English Dictionary. New EditionLearner's Irish-English Dictionary. New Edition by M.O. Siochfhradha
Buy used from: $8.50
Goes by many nearly identical titles. Old standby, but dated; more word lists than idioms or expressions. Print larger than pocket dictionaries. Lacks detail of Collins Gem and lacks the phonetics of "Foclóir Poca."
The Irish Language: An Overview and GuideThe Irish Language: An Overview and Guide by Darerca Ni Chartuir
Buy used from: $13.71
See my review at site for details. Helpful, if cursory, combination of history, impacts, resource list, and explanations. Bonus: essays by adult learners who have studied at Irish immersion centers.
Who Needs Irish?: Reflections on the Importance of the Irish Language TodayWho Needs Irish?: Reflections on the Importance of the Irish Language Today
Buy used from: $33.77
Reflections by writers and activists give essential context on Irish within Ireland. Some are learners, many are natives, but all argue well for the continuity and relevance of the national language. See my review at the site.
Favourite Irish Legends in Irish and English: A Dual Language BookFavourite Irish Legends in Irish and English: A Dual Language Book by Bairbre McCarthy
Buy new: $10.16 / Used from: $14.99
I read this to revive my dormant Irish years ago; a great jumpstart you can entertain your children with in both languages as you learn with them. Facing pages allow comparison of Irish with English.
Short Stories of Padraic Pearse: A Dual Language Book (English and Irish Edition)Short Stories of Padraic Pearse: A Dual Language Book (English and Irish Edition)
Buy used from: $14.26
Written by Pearse in his acquired Ros Muc Connacht Connemara West of Ireland dialect. Challenging, but shows what a learner can do! (As well as inspire the Easter Rising and politicize the Celtic Revival.) Pages facing allow comparison of English with Irish.
Irish for Beginners (Passport's Languages for Beginners Series)Irish for Beginners (Passport's Languages for Beginners Series) by Angela Wilkes
Buy used from: $5.34
I haven't heard the tape, but an enjoyable cartoon-learning aid for big and small students. Good for visual learners. See below for Helen Davies' "Beginner's Irish Dictionary" for families & adults too.
Sengoidelc: Old Irish for Beginners (Irish Studies)Sengoidelc: Old Irish for Beginners (Irish Studies) by David Stifter
Buy new: $34.20 / Used from: $46.67
Want to read Old Irish legends, lore, and laws? Almost like reading Old English vs. our version! Recommended by scholars as by far the best primer to a difficult, sparser, orthographically abrupt, rewardingly terse tongue.
Irish/English English/Irish Dictionary and Phrasebook (Language Dictionaries Series)Irish/English English/Irish Dictionary and Phrasebook (Language Dictionaries Series) by Davidovic Mladen
Buy new: $10.16 / Used from: $1.95
I like this reference. Only 1500 or so words, but phonetically rendered phrases and vocabulary lists give this an edge lacking in most other resources.
Beginner's Irish DictionaryBeginner's Irish Dictionary by Helen Davies
Buy used from: $1.57
See my review at site. Big brother of "Irish for Beginners" (listed earlier) in the Usborne series of pictorial word lists. Affordable, colorful, attractively laid out. Great for visual learners.
Irish Is Fun!: A New Course for the BeginnerIrish Is Fun!: A New Course for the Beginner by Aodan Mac Poilin
Buy used from: $2.11
Based on the non-P[olitically] C[orrect] Y Lolfa Welsh cartoon dialogue lessons. Dated, cheaply cut-and-pasted from the 70s it looks like, but a handy pocket stuffer. Good for slovenly visual learners as a break from rigid grammatical drills.

Buy new: $14.93 / Used from: $9.99
Will be reviewed when obtained. If it's based more on the Ó Dónaill TYI Grammar (see my review at the site) rather than the TYI Ó Sé & Sheils set, it may be quite valuable.
Speaking Irish (DVD Edition): Take your language skills beyond basicsSpeaking Irish (DVD Edition): Take your language skills beyond basics by Siuan Ni Mhaonaigh

See my review at site for details. Intermediate-to-Advanced. Emphasis on dialectical & colloquial distinctions between everyday vs. "school"/Standard Irish. 20 thematic lessons pair transcriptions & exercises with video interviews. More affordable than "Turas Teanga."

Buy new: $38.47 / Used from: $39.21
East Connemara/ Connacht/ Western dialect. Book with CDs. I have not heard this yet. Leading American teachers and Irish scholars have compiled this. See a helpful review of the set posted by "Gwilym."
Rosetta Stone Version 3: Irish Level 1, 2 & 3 Set with Audio CompanionRosetta Stone Version 3: Irish Level 1, 2 & 3 Set with Audio Companion
Buy new: $485.10 / Used from: $578.35
Expanded recently: I assume now all 3 levels of the RS system include Irish. The enormous expense prevents me from previewing it, however; little specific Irish language info on the RS website exists.
Buntus Cainte Ceim a hAon: A First Step in Spoken Irish Part 1 (Irish Edition)Buntus Cainte Ceim a hAon: A First Step in Spoken Irish Part 1 (Irish Edition) by Tomas O Domhnallain
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $17.25
Standard Irish. Beloved or belittled by generations of 1960s-era learners. 3 books now exist with CDs rather than cassettes. Cartoon lessons, dialogues galore, quaint but efficient and rather endearingly old-school.
Gaeilge agus Fáilte: A first course in Irish language and culture for adults (Irish Edition)Gaeilge agus Fáilte: A first course in Irish language and culture for adults (Irish Edition) by Annette Byrne
Buy used from: $79.99
See my review at site. Should be "Fáilte"--brief Standard Irish course developed for learners coming into Ireland from abroad and those in foreign countries. Multicultural dimension distinguishes this vibrant, contemporary text (2 CDs can be bought separately from Gael-Linn); basic but appealing to learners liking variety.
Progress in Irish: A Graded Course for Beginners and RevisionProgress in Irish: A Graded Course for Beginners and Revision by Mairead Ni Ghrada
Buy new: $32.49 / Used from: $20.98
A Yahoo group provides commentary for this primer. Standard Irish, often too brief, but simple exercises and two pages per lesson. Commonly supplemented by other grammars.
Basic Irish: A Grammar and Workbook (Grammar Workbooks)Basic Irish: A Grammar and Workbook (Grammar Workbooks) by Nancy Stenson
Buy new: $22.68 / Used from: $34.56
Not seen, but may be based on her 1990's lessons necessarily expanding those in Ó Siadhail's more daunting "Learning Irish." Stenson also has an "Intermediate Irish" grammar & workbook sold via Amazon.
The Irish Phrase-Book/An Raleabhar GaeilgeThe Irish Phrase-Book/An Raleabhar Gaeilge by Diarmuid O Donnchadha
Buy new: $11.95 / Used from: $4.09
Aimed at intermediate and advanced learners needing to expand their word-hoard. Grouped by common core words and needs. Recommended for conversational groups, classroom settings, and visits to the Gaeltachtaí. Affordable, compact, and useful.
Home with Alice: A Journey in Gaelic IrelandHome with Alice: A Journey in Gaelic Ireland by Steve Fallon
Buy new: $11.04 / Used from: $2.43
A Bostonian returns to Conamara to study Irish and travels about the Gaeltachtaí. See my review at site. Relevant, thoughtful, if rather quirky and offbeat narrative.
Irish Language & Culture (Language Reference)Irish Language & Culture (Language Reference) by Martin Hughes
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $4.99
See my review at site. Has only ten pages or so on the Irish language itself, but an entertaining, brisk, wry intro to Hiberno-English in its colorful, off-color, and idiosyncratically robust forms, many based on Gaelic idiom as rendered or "ghosted."
THE IRISH LANGUAGE IN IRELAND: FROM GAODEL TO GLOBALISATION (Routledge Studies in Linguistics)THE IRISH LANGUAGE IN IRELAND: FROM GAODEL TO GLOBALISATION (Routledge Studies in Linguistics) by Diarma Chraost
Buy new: $185.00 / Used from: $92.50
See my review at site. Subtitle should be "Goidel"-- academic study for linguists and sociologists, but useful incorporation of recent surveys of NI & Ireland regarding actual language use. Dense, but (nearly) up-to-date.
How the Irish Invented Slang: The Secret Language of the Crossroads (Counterpunch) (English and Irish Edition)How the Irish Invented Slang: The Secret Language of the Crossroads (Counterpunch) (English and Irish Edition) by Daniel Cassidy
Buy new: $12.89 / Used from: $2.95
I have not read this yet, but the author, inspired by leafing through an Irish dictionary, argues that many expressions we use in English derive from Irish itself. I'm curious how etymologists & lexicologists respond to these assertions.
Ma Bhionn Tu Liom Bi LiomMa Bhionn Tu Liom Bi Liom by Roisin Elsafty
Buy new: $38.99 / Used from: $55.59
See my review at site. I like this as representative of Cois Fharraige Connemara Western dialect, that you may study in Ó Siadhail's "Learning Irish" set (see above).
The Road from ConnemaraThe Road from Connemara by Joe Heaney
Buy new: $23.99 / Used from: $70.87
Leading sean-nós (old style, unaccompanied vocal) singer from Connemara "discovered" as Merv Griffin's doorman! Legendary vocal power in the ancient Irish seanachie mode. Helps to hear Irish as you learn it.
