![]() | A Charlie Brown Christmas by Vince Guaraldi
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $6.29 Might as well start with this (the rest of the list in in chronological order by the artist). Perhaps the most beloved Christmas album of all time. A hundred years from now, it will still be the most beloved.
![]() | Greatest Christmas Songs by Julie Andrews
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $3.96 Repackaging of Andrews' 1968 album "A Christmas Treasure." Talk about one of the most hauntingly beautiful voices ever! And it's put to fine use by singing classic Christmas carols.
![]() | Christmas with Julie Andrews by Julie Andrews
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $3.54 More somber than her previous album, but her voice is still as great as ever,
![]() | Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer by Gene Autry
Buy new: $8.47 / Used from: $26.74 Not as extensive as other releases (where's "Frosty the Snowman"?), but this is the only original Autry Christmas album available (and it's the only one with his charming vocal introductions!).
![]() | Christmas with the Beach Boys by The Beach Boys
Buy used from: $7.46 Includes their original album "The Beach Boys' Christmas Album" plus other holiday-related singles and interviews. Their slower songs get really monotonous, but their fast-paced numbers are awesome.
![]() | Christmas Collection by The Carpenters
Buy new: $15.97 / Used from: $10.04 Contains both their Christmas albums "Christmas Portrait" and "An Old Fashioned Christmas" in their complete, original forms (unlike the single-disc "Christmas Portrait" release, which mixes material from both).
![]() | The Christmas Song by Nat King Cole
Buy used from: $7.64 Surely one of the Top 5 (maybe 3) "Synonymous with Christmas" recording artists, though his work obviously extends far beyond the holidays.
![]() | The Voice of Christmas: The Complete Decca Christmas Songbook by Bing Crosby
Buy new: $15.97 / Used from: $11.99 Contains all the material from Bing's 1947 "White Christmas" album, PLUS every single Christmas recording he ever did. A lot of tracks repeat because of this, but that only means you get to pick your favorite versions!
![]() | Christmas with Dino by Dean Martin
Buy used from: $7.95 Okay, technically not an original album, but it does collect all his Christmas tracks from the original "A Winter Romance" and "The Dean Martin Christmas Album," both of which were only half-devoted to Christmas songs. So this release is the way to go.
![]() | Merry Christmas by Johnny Mathis
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $4.99 This guy's music is just so fun and bouncy! Another artist synonymous with the holiday season.
![]() | Christmas with Johnny Mathis by Johnny Mathis
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $3.25 Really a retitled version of Mathis' second Christmas album "The Sounds of Christmas" only sans two tracks: "The Little Drummer Boy" (which is actually included on the next album) and "Have Reindeer Will Travel" (which as far as I know isn't available anywhere).
![]() | Give Me Your Love for Christmas by Johnny Mathis
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.25 His third and final Christmas album from the 60s. Not as good as his previous two, but still very good in its own right.
![]() | Elvis Christmas (+ 1 Bonus Track) by Elvis Presley
Buy used from: $0.11 Contains both his Christmas albums, "Elvis' Christmas Album" and "Elvis Sings the Wonderful World of Christmas." Personally, I replaced the four gospel tracks that end the first one with the non-album single "If Every Day Was Like Christmas."
![]() | A Jolly Christmas from Frank Sinatra by Frank Sinatra
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.10 There's a reason Sinatra wasn't so well-known for his Christmas recordings, but this is still a very fun album.
![]() | A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector by Phil Spector
Buy used from: $8.92 Fantastic ground-breaking classic! Darlene Love's amazing "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" steals the show.
![]() | The Andy Williams Christmas Album by Andy Williams
Buy used from: $5.92 For me, Andy Williams is THE Voice of Christmas. This and his next album are probably my two favorites in my entire collection.
![]() | Merry Christmas by Andy Williams
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $24.78 "Do You Hear What I Hear?" alone makes this album a must-buy.
![]() | A Christmas Carol (Ultimate Collector's Edition)(B/W & Color)
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $12.78 The definitive (not to mention very BEST) "Christmas Carol" out there. Alastair Sim gives a performance for the ages in a production both etched in technical and historical detail, and dripping with atmosphere. A classic motion picture and possibly the greatest Christmas film ever. (The only competition comes later in this list . . .)
![]() | Scrooge
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $9.50 Vastly underrated! Quirky musical with a Leslie Bricusse score that grows on you, as does Albert Finney's performance. It may take more than one viewing to realize what an extraordinary achievement it is. And Sir Alec Guinness is a blast as Jacob Marley. This whole film deserves to be much more well-known.
![]() | A Christmas Carol
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $13.47 George C. Scott may not be the most convincing Englishman, but his Scrooge is a wholly original take on the character. Some parts of the film don't seem quite right (the Ghost of Christmas Present is a jerk, Tiny Tim has way too much make-up), but the good (including David Warner as Bob Cratchit) far outweighs the bad.
![]() | The Muppet Christmas Carol - Kermit's 50th Anniversary Edition
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $14.37 A miracle of a movie, in that it's not the expected "Muppets spoof a classic" fare. Though it is full of great Muppet moments, it is a sincere (and sincerely GOOD) adaptation of Dickens. Scrooge is again uniquely played, this time by Michael Caine, and the movie has lots of atmosphere and a superb musical score and songs. Wonderful and moving.
![]() | Miracle on 34th Street (Special Edition)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $7.86 THIS is the one tied with the '51 "Christmas Carol." Like that film, this is a touching gem of a film, a classic among classics, and possibly the happiest movie ever made! Edmund Gwenn simply IS Santa Claus; as far as I'm concerned, it's one of the most perfect performances ever captured on film.
![]() | It's A Wonderful Life (Two-Disc Collector's Set) (B/W & Color)
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $14.90 You know, this really isn't a Christmas movie at all. Aside from the last two minutes of the movie, it has NOTHING to do with Christmas! But tradition is tradition, and the holidays really is the best time to watch it. This movie's impact goes beyond words.
![]() | A Christmas Story (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy used from: $8.29 You don't have to have grown up with this one (as most people I know did) to love it. I first saw it when I was 16 or 17, and immediately fell in love with it. A real gem!
![]() | March of the Wooden Soldiers (Colorized / Black & White)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $704.91 Another one that's not really a Christmas movie, but this one just has that Christmasy feeling to it, you know? (Plus, Santa DOES make an appearance!) Now I actually grew up with the colorized version, and seeing as 1) it's set in Toyland for crying out loud, and 2) the Legend Films colorization job is flawless, this DVD is the way to go.
![]() | The Raymond Briggs' The Snowman
Buy new: $5.49 / Used from: $4.50 Half an hour long . . . and every frame and every note is beautiful. Howard Blake's music will remain with you forever, as will the song "Walking in the Air."
![]() | The Original Christmas Classics (Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer/Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town/Frosty the Snowman/Frosty Returns/Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol/Little Drummer Boy/Cricket on the Hearth)
Buy new: $21.49 / Used from: $11.65 As of yet, there has not been a definitive, complete collection of the Rankin/Bass stop-motion Christmas cartoons (which, to me, are more synonymous with Christmas than anything else on this list). But this set and the next two are as close as you can get. Again, here's hoping to next year!
![]() | Classic Christmas Favorites (Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! / The Year Without a Santa Claus / Rudolph and Frosty's Christmas in July / Rudolph's Shiny New Year / and More)
Buy new: $24.99 / Used from: $21.91 I'm really getting fed up with stingy old Warner Bros. for their double-, triple-, and fourple-dips of their Christmas cartoons. Each year, they release a new set with a few more. Why not go all the way and include everything in one box?? Not very festive of them, that's for sure.
![]() | Jack Frost (Remastered Deluxe Edition)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $6.68 Should have been part of the aforementioned set, but again, Warner seems to want to squeeze every last penny out of the public for as long as they can.
Oh well! That's not to leave this list on a bitter note! MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!!
