1939 - The all-time classic. Nothing more can be said of this marvel. Judy received a special Oscar for this film.
A Star Is BornA Star Is Born
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $3.96
1954 - THE Garland performance for all eternity. Anyone who dismissed her dramatic talent could no longer do so after this. She was Oscar-nominated and deserved to win...but Grace Kelly was getting married to a Prince and Judy was considered a pain in the a**. That's Hollywood. "The Man That Got Away" is one of the all-time great vocal performances - by anyone.
Meet Me In St. Louis (Two-Disc Special Edition)Meet Me In St. Louis (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $15.96
1944 - Judy's second beloved classic. Song after marvelous song spills from the screen and Judy never looked lovelier.
The PirateThe Pirate
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $9.89
1947 - This was the first Garland film to ever lose money. Its sophisticated, sardonic humor plays better to audiences today than to the baffled folks of 1948. It's a lavish spectacle through and through.
Easter Parade (Special Edition)Easter Parade (Special Edition)
Buy new: $24.49 / Used from: $18.70
1948 - A quaint showbiz yarn surrounded by a gazillion Irving Berlin stunners. It's the music here folks, and Garland combined with Astaire is a delicious combo.
Judgment at NurembergJudgment at Nuremberg
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $2.16
1961 - A dynamite and forceful cast performs the crap out of a familiar Stanley Kramer "message" picture. Still, the real concentration camp footage was risky and shockingly necessary, and Judy was Oscar-nominated for her intense portrayal of a victim of the Nazis. Riveting.
The ClockThe Clock
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $6.68
1945 - This is a lovely time capsule of a long ago era in American history. Not so much WWII, though, but more the MGM factory at its zenith. An incredibly real New York City was recreated on the backlot and Judy's heartfelt performance showed she could carry a dramatic film, sans song.
The Harvey GirlsThe Harvey Girls
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $5.78
1946 - The story is a trifle, but who cares when the comedy is sharp and the musical numbers pack a whallop. "Atchison, Topeka..." is a true Garland cinematic highpoint. The technicolor is gorgeous.
For Me and My Gal (Keepcase)For Me and My Gal (Keepcase)
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $4.50
1942- Judy and Gene at the dawn of the Freed unit. A corny story can't still the luster of Judy's vibrant beauty or Gene's sometimes over-the-top euphoria. Put 'em together and you reach critical mass. Enjoy.
The Mickey Rooney & Judy Garland Collection (Babes in Arms / Babes on Broadway / Girl Crazy / Strike Up the Band)The Mickey Rooney & Judy Garland Collection (Babes in Arms / Babes on Broadway / Girl Crazy / Strike Up the Band)
Buy new: $44.49 / Used from: $39.17
1943 - "Girl Crazy" is the best of the Garland-Rooney pairings. The cornball showbiz themes are largely missing and those Irving Berlin songs are great. Watch all four movies in this collection and you'll notice something: talented though he is, Rooney's incessant mugging becomes unbearable. Judy, on the other hand, is never defeated by sub-par material. Her artistic choices are a marvel.
